Four days of family fun planned for 2015 Monroe County Fairby Kristina Gabalski

2013 Monroe County Fair tractor pull competition. Other attractions include a children’s fun zone, live music, and events for all ages. David Knox Photography

“...you drop off your items one of the days right before fair, so we can get them judged and put the ribbons on them when we display them,” she says. “We encourage anyone to enter, wheth-er it’s a new hobby for them or a lifelong passion.”

This year, lap robes, blankets and quilts will be collected to donate to Meals on Wheels as part of the Home and Arts show. Donations can be dropped off at the Ski Lodge the morn-ing of August 3 and will be displayed at the fair before being sent to Meals on Wheels to benefit those locally who are homebound.

Donated items can be entered in the Home Arts Show if desired, Colby says.

course,” Colby says.Monroe County favorite LuGia’s ice

cream will be returning to the food tent, she says, as well as Spencerport’s Barton’s Hots and Salavatore’s Pizza.

The 2015 Monroe County Fair opens Thursday, August 6 and Colby says two new events are scheduled that day.

“The Wine & Beer Tasting (6 p.m.) will (include) several wine and beer producers from the area like Leonard Oakes and A Gust of Sun, which re-cently opened a tasting room on Ridge Road,” Colby says. “We expect there will be some products for sale, so, if you like it, you can get some to take home with you that night.”

There is a $10 fee for the Tasting on Thursday, Colby adds. Access to the food truck rodeo on Friday is free with fair admission.

Also new on Thursday is a Pet Show for youth at 7 p.m.

“It’ll be a fun event for showing off costumes and silly tricks,” not like a formal breed show,” Colby explains. “Anyone ages 7-17 can participate with their pets and show off how well they work with and take care of their crit-ters. The information is online at mc-fair.com/exhibitors, including the entry form to mail in so we know they’re com-ing to the show.”

Also available online are entry forms and information regarding all shows open to the public: home arts and tex-tiles, food, photography, fine arts, wood-working, and flowers and vegetables from your garden.

Colby says the deadline for entries is July 29 - one week before the fair. Depending on which show you enter,

This year’s Monroe County Fair is set for August 6 to 9 at Northampton Park in the events area between the horse arena and the Ski Lodge, near the cor-ner of Colby Street and Hubbell Road in the Town of Ogden.

Sarah Colby, a member of the Mon-roe County Fair and Recreation Asso-ciation Board, says new this year is a food truck rodeo beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 7. Featured will be food trucks from Rochester and Buffalo known collectively as Rollin’ Thunder.

“Friday night we are also having the 4-H Dog Show, so folks should come out to get dinner from the food truck ro-deo or from the Brockport Rotary Club - who will be back with hot dogs and hamburgers - and then watch the 4-H kids run their dogs through the agility

There will be some mechanical kiddie rides this year, she says. The rides are $3 each or $15 for an all-day ride wrist-band. Hay Wagon Farm rides are $6.

The Garden Tractor Pull returns on Sunday at 1 p.m. and the fair also fea-tures livestock shows including meat goats on Saturday.

Live music is planned and is free with admission, but Colby says that sched-ule is being finalized.

Parking is free. Tickets are $7 gen-eral admission, $6 seniors, children 12 and under are free. The Monroe County Fair runs Thursday, August 6, 1 to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, August 9, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

German Festival returnsFor 111 years, German immigrants, their

descendants and friends have been cel-ebrating their heritage with a festival known as German Day or German Sum-mer Fest.

The fest is most authentic since the management, preparation and work is all volunteer, drawn from the 11 individual clubs that constitute the Federation of German American Societies Inc. Thank-fully we are joined by many friends who also volunteer to help and have fun with us. On Wednesday of fest week, 10 5-gal-lon buckets of sauerkraut is cooked and on Thursday, 700 pounds of Colby’s pota-toes are transformed into German potato salad by a cadre of knife wielding women and a man or two - if they slice them prop-erly. Several ladies are the mixologists, who rarely give out the recipe.

Supporting the salad and sauerkraut are typical German Festival meat items such as bratwurst, bauern wurst, hot dogs and hamburgers. Beverages of most types are also available, as well as a variety of desserts and coffee.

After an absence of several years, the “Glueckshafen” will return. This is rack of almost 100 items that are numbered and can be won by purchasing small rolled up pieces of paper that may have a num-ber on them; something for children of all ages. People can also participate in the beer stein competition and win additional prizes. This is a shuffleboard type game

where the player slides a beer stein at-tempting to have it stop on the target near the other end.

This year’s fest will be held at the Spen-cerport Fireman’s Field on Friday, August 7, from 4 to 11 p.m. and on Saturday, Au-gust 8, from noon to 11 p.m. Music, danc-ing and German folk dancing presenta-tions will be present to entertain the fes-tgoers.
