Dayenu
Having seen what God did to the Egyptians, we have a list of all the good things God did to the Israelites
beginning with the Exodus and concluding with the building of the Temple.
The list appears twice: Once as a list with each phrase ending with the word “Dayenu” once as a prose.
The last lines of the poem appear problematic. Had He given us the Sabbath and not brought us before
Mt. Sinai; Had He not given us the Torah; Had He not bought us into the Land of Israel; Had He not built
the Temple for us. In such poetry the sense of the text is less important than the music (rhyme and rythem).
Compare the Poem with the Prose. Which came first the Poetry or the Prose? Why?
How many lines are there in Dayenu? Can you make a connection with the “Ma’alot”?
Hallel Part i—Psalm 113-114
These may be of the oldest segments of the Haggadah as it is already mentioned in the Mishnah.
Mishna Psachim 10:5
Therefore let us say before Him, Hallelujah!
ונאמר לפניו הללויה.
Mishna Psachim 10:6
Up until which point should he recite? The House of Shammai says: Up to 'as a happy mother of
children'. The House of Hillel says: Up to 'flint stone into a water -spring', and conclude with the
blessing of redemption.

Psalm 113: Servants of God as opposed to Servants of Pharaoh. Psalm 114: This is a more direct
connection—“When Israel went out of Egypt.”
Does the Psalm deal with the Exodus or events after the Exodus?
There is a philosophical issue here about the function of the Seder. Is the Seder a re-enactment of the first
Seder or is it a celebration of the Exodus? Beit Shammai assume it is a re-enactment and Beit Hillel that it
is a celebration of the Exodus.
Hillel and Shammai flourished during the last century of the Second Temple. Does this tell us that Hallel
was recited over the Passover during Temple times?
Part I of the Hallel fits in with the Seder which deals primarily with pre Exodus—slavery.
The Meal and all its parts—This is a regular festive meal except that we ate Matza instead of
bread and with the addition of some special rites—hence a few special brachot.
Sephardi Jews heat roast meat but not an whole lamb. Ashkenazic Jews tend not to eat roasted meat (or
chicken) so as to note the absence of our Holy Temple.
~ 18 ~
We eat an egg (a food of mourning) to remember the Temple. According to others the Festive Sacrifice—
Korban Chagigah.
The meal ends with the eating of the Afikoman –to simply keep the taste of Matza with us—and the
Birkat Hamazon over the third of the four cups of wine.
CONCLUSION OF THE SEDER:
Shfoch Chamatcha—Pour out Your fury—note 4 verses (#4). Probably a response to the Crusades
(remember that Passover generally takes place at the same time as Easter.) Some felt that these verses were
inappropriate. However, after the Holocaust it was like a memorial during our Seder and many follow the
passage with the singing of Ani Maamin.
Many felt that before we say the second part of the Hallel, we might call upon God to avenge His People
as part of the future redemption.
Hallel Part ii
Part ii of the Hallel is post slavery. Post redemption or future redemption. This is recited over the fourth
cup of wine or the Cup of Hallel.
If Psalms 113-114 are sung before the meal, it is only natural to conclude the Hallel after the meal.
THE FIFTH CUP OF WINE:
One cup to correspond to each expression of redemption Exodus 6:6-7

6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel: I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments;

7 and I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
The next verse states:
ל ח ם, א תכ אתי א ב ץ-וה ר האר , אשת ת -נשאתי א אתה לאברהם ידי, לת

8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for a heritage: I am the LORD.'
The Talmud debates whether we should have 5 cups to correspond to the expression in Verse 8 and
concludes in a draw. The Hebrew word for the draw in the Talmud is TeYKO (Eliyahu Hatishbi will
answer us all questions)
Hence the fifth cup is poured but not drunk and is called the cup of Eliyahu. It is as if to say that when
Eliyahu will come, he will tell us whether to drink it or not.
~ 20 ~
Now that we have a State of Israel we can state that God did “bring us into our land” and we should
drink the fifth cup.
1. Chassal Seder Pesach
There was a tendency to extend the experience of the Seder by adding songs and poems at the
conclusion of the prescribed text. The Ashkenazi community added 7 such songs/poems at the end of
its Haggadah. The first, “Chassal Seder Pesach” declaring the conclusion of the Seder was said after
drinking the fourth cup of wine. When we say the final line: Lead the planted stock, redeemed, to Zion
with song. We declare Next year in Jerusalem— .לשנה הבאה בירושלים
The remaining six can be classified in pairs. The first two are taken from the synagogue liturgy and
are recited one on the first night and the second on the second night.
The last two pairs (four) are songs of praise and may be regarded as songs of praise serving to
enhance the feeling of festivity.
The next two do not deal with Passover and include simple lists of the attributes of God. The final
pair is folkloric: A number song (echad mi yodeah—who knows 1? And Had Gadya)
A French poet, Samuel Bonfils (11 C) wrote a lengthy poem summarizing the laws of Passover. It was
included in the liturgy on Shabbat Hagadol (the Shabbat prior to Passover before Keddusha). The
summary of the laws concluded with the phrase from Chassal Seder Pesach: “The order of the
Passover concluded; just as we have been privileged to arrange it (the laws) so may we be privileged to
fulfill it.” This meant that they hoped to observe Passover properly next week. By adopting the text
into the Haggadah, the phrase has come to mean that we be worthy to observe it in the rebuilt Temple.
2a. Uvchen Vayehi Bachatzi Halayla
~ 21 ~
Sixth Century Poet of Eretz Yisrael—Yannai.
This poem was part of the synagogue liturgy and was based on Exodus 12:29—In the Middle of the night.
This explains the refrain—Bachatzi Halayla.
2b. Uvechen Ve’amartem Zevvach Pesach
This too is a poem that was borrowed from the synagogue service and was written by Eleazar Hakalir—a
student of Yannai.
3a. Ki Lo Naeh, Ki lo Yaeh
This poem like 3b does not relate to Passover. It is written as an alphabetic acrostic enumerating the
attributes of God with 3 attributes to each line. The final line has three attributes each beginning with the
letter Tav.
3b. Adir Hu

The next two poems are probably the most recent additions to the Haggadah as neither appear in
manuscripts of the Haggadah that are dated earlier than the 16C. So we believe that the next two poems
were either added or composed in the 16C.
4a. Echad Mi Yodeah
This is a counting song giving a list from 1 to 13 and finding something of Jewish significance to associate
with each of the numbers. Most of the song is in Hebrew but some lines are in Aramaic. The song is
cumulative and repeats the count to 1 from every number.
The poem has nothing to do with Passover. There are parallels of this poem in other cultures.
4b. Chad Gadya
This poem belongs to a genre of cumulative songs where each stanza adds something before repeating all
the others. This poem like the previous has parallels in other cultures.
The notion that God kills the Angel of Death has a mystical quality aspiring to the death of death.
Sphardi Haggadot tend to include the Song of Songs, Shir Hashirim.
Some Haggadot conclude the evening with the singing of Hatikvah. This comes to symbolize that
redemption is not something only of the past but also something towards all Jews eagerly yearn.
The Haggadah is not only something of the past but also a step towards our future.
