Text Formatting

Inline formatting

$ere" %e demonstrate various types of inline text formatting and the useof embedded fonts#

$ere is some bold, italic, bold-italic, underlined and struc! out text#

Then" %e have a superscript and a subscript# &o% %e see some red" green and

blue text# 'ome text %ith a yello% highlight# 'ome text in a box# 'ome text in

inverse video#

( paragraph %ith styled text) subtle emphasis follo%ed by strong text

and intense emphasis# This paragraph uses document %ide styles for

styling rather than inline text properties as demonstrated in the previous

paragraph * calibre can handle both %ith e+ual ease#

Fun with fonts

This document has embedded the Ubuntu font family# The body text is in

the Ubuntu typeface" here is some text in the Ubuntu ,ono typeface" notice

ho% every letter has the same %idth" even i and m# Every embedded font

%ill automatically be embedded in the output eboo! during conversion#

Paragraph level formatting

-ou can do cra.y things %ith paragraphs" if the urge stri!es you# /or

instance this paragraph is right aligned and has a right border# It has also

been given a light gray bac!ground#

/or the lovers of poetry amongst you" paragraphs %ith hanging indents" li!e

this often come in handy# -ou can use hanging indents to ensure that a

line of poetry retains its individual identity as a line even %hen the

screen is too narro% to display it as a single line# &ot only does this

paragraph have a hanging indent" it is also has an extra top margin"

setting it apart from the preceding paragraph#

Tables Tables in 0ord can vary from the extremely

simple to the extremely complex# calibre tries to

do its best %hen converting tables# 0hile youmay run into trouble %ith the occasional table"

the vast ma1ority of common cases should be

converted very %ell" as demonstrated in this

section# &ote that for optimum results" %hen

creating tables in 0ord" you should set their

%idths using percentages" rather than absolute units# To the left of this

paragraph is a 2oating t%o column table %ith a nice green border and header

!tru"tural Elements, iscellaneous structural elements you can add to your document" li!e

footnotes" endnotes" dropcaps and the li!e#

Footnotes # Endnotes

/ootnotes4 and endnotesi are automatically recogni.ed and both are

converted to endnotes" %ith bac!lin!s for maximum ease of use in eboo!

devices#

rop"aps

rop caps are used to emphasi.e the leading paragraph at the start

of a section# In 0ord it is possible to specify ho% many lines of text

a drop@cap should use# ecause of limitations in eboo! technology"

this is not possible %hen converting# Instead" the converted dropcap %ill use font si.e and line height to simulate the eBect as %ell as

possible# 0hile not as good as the original" the result is usually tolerable#

This paragraph has a D dropcap set to occupy three lines of text %ith a font

si.e of ;7#; pts# Depending on the screen %idth and capabilities of the

device you vie% the boo! on" this dropcap can loo! anything from perfect to

ugly#

D$in%s

T%o !inds of lin!s are possible" those that refer to an external %ebsite

and those that refer to locations inside the document itself# oth aresupported by calibre# /or example" here is a lin! pointing to the calibre

do%nload page# Then %e have a lin! that points bac! to the section on

paragraph level formatting in this document#

Table of Contents

There are t%o approaches that calibre ta!es %hen generating a Table of

Contents# The Arst is if the 0ord document has a Table of Contents itself#

Provided that the Table of Contents uses hyperlin!s" calibre %ill automatically

use it# The levels of the Table of Contents are identiAed by their left indent"

so if you %ant the eboo! to have a multi@level Table of Contents" ma!e sure

you create a properly indented Table of Contents in 0ord#

4 In paged media" footnotes are usually displayed at the bottom of the

text# $o%ever" in eboo!s" a better paradigm is to ma!e them clic!able

endnotes that the user can bro%se at her pleasure# This conversion is

handled automatically by calibre#

Page 6: Word Xxx

8/18/2019 Word Xxx

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/word-xxx 6/9

If no Table of Contents is found in the document" then a table of contents

is automatically generated from the headings in the document# ( heading is

identiAed as something that has the $eading 4 or $eading =" etc# style

applied to it# These headings are turned into a Table of Contents %ith

$eading 4 being the topmost level" $eading = the second level and so on#

-ou can see the Table of Contents created by calibre by clic!ing the Table

of Contents button in %hatever vie%er you are using to vie% the converted

ImagesImages can be of three main types# Inline

images are images that are part of the normal

text 2o%" li!e this image of a green dot # Inlineimages do not cause brea!s in the text and are usually small in si.e# The

next category of image is a 2oating image" one that 2oats on the page

and is surrounded by text# 0ord supports more types of 2oating images than

are possible %ith current eboo! technology" so the conversion maps 2oating

images to simple left and right 2oats" as you can see %ith the left and right

arro% images on the sides of this paragraph#

The Anal type of image is a bloc! image" one that becomes a

paragraph on its o%n and has no text on either side# elo% is a centered

green dot#

Centered images li!e this are useful for large pictures that should be a

focus of attention#

enerally" it is not possible to translate the exact positioning of images

from a 0ord document to an eboo!# That is because in 0ord" image

positioning is speciAed in absolute units from the page boundaries# There is

no analogous technology in eboo!s" so the conversion %ill usually end up

placing the image either centered or 2oating close to the point in the text

%here it %as inserted" not necessarily %here it appears on the page in 0ord#

i Endnotes are typically used for longer notes" they remain endnotes %hen

converted into eboo! form" except that they have an additional bac!lin! to ma!e

it easy to return to the current position after reading the note#
