Impact

The Workhouse Brewfest was held on August 13, 2016. More than 1500 tickets were purchased in advance and the attendance was estimated at more than 2500, including 250 volunteers and many first time visitors. 28 craft breweries, 3 cideries, 4 wineries, 6 distilleries, 17 food trucks, 8 exhibitors, and 15 bands participated. More than 20 articles and news mentions complemented the 135 Facebook posts reaching nearly 113,000 people. Eleven sponsors supported the festival. Heritage Brewing Honey Ginger Wheat Ale won the Workhouse Brew of the Year.

Despite a heat index of 100+, feedback from ticket holders, vendors, volunteers, and the general public was extremely positive. The 2017 Brewfest will be held August 12.

Challenge

Showcase the economic opportunities created by the Workhouse artists and regional craft brewers and introduce a new and different audience to the arts center. Pulling together a first-ever event required collaboration and expertise of many partners. In addition, permissions, creativity, enthusiasm, and shared resources were needed to take this from vision to reality.

Background

In early 2016 OP3 approached the Workhouse Arts Center and proposed a partnership to create a regional Brewfest to showcase the goals of the Economic Success Plan. The objective was to highlight the economic impact of local entrepreneurs and artisans; promote arts, hospitality and tourism; and create interest in a place that people want to be – three important tenets of the Economic Success Plan.

Solution

In conjunction with the Workhouse, OP3 convened a partnership that included the Fairfax County Park Authority, Office of Public Affairs, Department of Planning and Zoning, Visit Fairfax and Celebrate Fairfax, Inc. These groups worked together for months, each in its own specialty, pulling together public relations, operational, planning and funding pieces for the Brewfest. Fairfax Alliance for Better Biking (FABB), Potomac Pedalers, and Active PW promoted this as a bike-friendly venue, developed five ride routes, and hosted a group ride.
