“여성 생리대 주말 장보러 갔을 때 조사해 보니, 같은 제품이라도 판매되는 마켓에 따라 가격이 조금씩 달랐지만, 가장 저렴한 마켓에서 판매되는 생리대 중에서는 사진에 나와있는 Freestyle이라는 제품(218콰차)이 가장 저렴했습니다. 오늘 현지 직원에게 물어보니 시중에선 이 제품이 가장 저렴하고, 중국 마켓에선 10pec들이 한 팩 150콰차에 구입할 수도 있다고 하는군요. 하지만 거의 대부분의 여학생들은 완제품 생리대를 사서 사용하는 경우는 매우 드물고, 대개 집에서 천 조각을 잘라 사용하고, 또 빨아서 재사용한다고 합니다. Rural 지역에서는 대부분 천 조각만 사용하고, 그나마 도시에 거주하고 솜을 살 수 있는 여력이 있는 여학생들은 솜을 사서 솜을 천으로 싸서 사용한다고 합니다. 솜은 대개 100콰차에 한 봉지를 살 수 있다고 합니다. 생리에 관한 교육은 보통 첫 생리 이후 어머니를 통해 받고, 어머니로부터 천으로 생리대를 만들어서 사용하는 법을 배운다고 합니다.” 현지조사결과 by 말라위 현지 활동가(정재우)

Executive Summary Innovation-In-a-Box is an initiative to provide local people in developing and least developed countries with a variety of toolkit boxes that would function as "micro-workshop". With these boxes, local people, especially local women, will be involved with the three key stages of capacity development: learning, manufacturing and marketing.

Background Lack of safe and low-cast sanitary pads cause many issues to local female, especially female students. According to Sustainable Health Enterprise (SHE), female students may miss classes of up to 50 days in an academic year. Reasons behind this include the fact that they cannot afford fads so that they have to just use muds, bark, pieces of newspapers or cloth. With this situation, female may end up losing up to 5 years out of her life time, truly a huge loss of human development as well as community potentials. Social Impact 1) Marketability In local markets, a package of sanitary pads are normally sold at $1. Three DIY Sustainable Sanitary Pads (SSP) manufactured out of Workshop-In-a-Box could be sold at $0.5, and these pads are readily washable for resue. These potential could open up a window of opportunity for female entreprenuers to generate extra incomes, in addition to saving costs. 2) Environmental sustainability Unlike disposable sanitary pads that use bleaching chemicals and add to waste problems, the DIY Sustainable Sanitary Pads (SSP) can be used as long as they are managed properly by, for example, washing them in cold water. People can recycle and source local cloth to manufacture the pads. 3) Gender Equality and Women Empowerment The availability of low-cost reusable sanitary pads will enable female students and female workers to continue with what they value doing without disruptions. The use of eco-friendly sanitary pads will also help with hygiene well being of females.

What is the box? Workshop-In-a-Box is an initiative to provide local people in developing and least developed countries with a variety of 'themed' mini toolkit boxes that are immediately workable, marketable and sustainable. These different kinds of Workshop-In-a-Box would function as ready-to-operate "micro workshops" where local people learn to produce and market specific items that address their daily needs or create new market. The boxes are designed in such a way that it expects to offer income-generating opportunities and so ultimately enhance entrepreneurial capacity. Local women will be the main beneficiary as they are usually crafted and creative with a natural sense of 'marketing‘. Inside the Box These are literally cardboard recycled "boxes". Inside the boxes are a number of materials along with pictorial guide-lines. With these workable materials and actionable guidelines, users can immediately work out to produce 'products' that they could use or they wish to market for extra cash. Provided materials are easily replaced by local ones. Among the conceptualized boxes are 'Workshop-In-a-Box' 'Kitchen-In-a-Box' 'Garden-In-a-Box' and 'Playground-In-a-Box'. These are collectively called 'Innovation-In-a-Box'. In a nutshell, Innovation-In-a-Box aims to provide unique user experiences of "learning" "manufacturing" and "marketing" through those boxes. Delivering the Box Locally themed boxes will be locally manufactured and locally sourced. These boxes (around $3) would be sold on credit to local women through the established channels of local NGOs. Those local women are obliged to attend a half-day training course where they learn about how to become the owner of their own "mini workshop". Upon certification, they swiftly become self-employed individual proprietors of those "mini workshops". What they will learn includes how to manufacture themed items with initially provided materials, how to source locally available materials and how to market those end products. NGOs will serve as "a wholesaler", providing needed coaching to keep quality of these mini workshops

and identifying markets in the cities.

Scaling Up the Box Information and guidelines as to how to create those boxes will be made available to licensed NGOs. With this knowledge, NGOs are allowed to produce the boxes that are locally themed, locally sourced and locally marketable. The core team of "Innovation-In-a-Box" will visit those hubs to provide continuous support and quality monitoring. The first field needs assessment is expected to be undertaken at one of the Millennium Villages in Malawi in the summer of 2012. This initiative is to be supported by Edit-the-World, a social publishing venture whose initiative was recognized in 2011 as a UNESCO official project on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Its operation has currently reached out to Rwanda, Nepal and Malawi, and is being planned to scale up its operation for development in partnership with appropriate technology experts including Paul Polak, founder of International Development Enterprise and author of 'Out of Poverty'. 1st theme of Workshop-In-a-Box: Sustainable Sanitary Pads (SSP) The first theme would be on Do-It-Yourself Sustainable Sanitary Pads (SSP). This version of Workshop-In-a-Box will consist of the following materials that would enable female users to manufacture up to 30 reusable pads. 30 small pieces of cotton flannel (for exterior pads) 30 small pieces of towel (for interior pads) 30 small bio-degradable plastic bags (for packaging and marketing) Two sized moulds (for continued manufacturing with locally sourced materials) Scissors, needles and threads Pictorial manufacturing guideline 2 sample DIY reusable sanitary pads General information about public health
