1.Even with this finer-grained distinction, the range can be quite pronounced from one level to the next.

2. Proficiency does not consist of a series of discrete steps labeled be-ginning, etc. Rather it is a continuum.

3. It is therefore not always easy to iden-tify precisely when a learner has moved from one level of proficiency to another.

4. Another factor to keep in mind is that different countries, educational systems, and publishers will ten to vary somewhat in their application of the terms begin-ning, intermediate, and advanced.

There are two broad ways in which we can think of language.

1. The 1st is as a subject to be stud-ied, much like other subjects in the school curriculum such as math, sci-ence, or geography

2. The 2nd is as a tool for communica-tion, which is the orientation of this book.

1. Oral production consists of isolated words and learned phrases within very predictable areas of need.

2. Vocabulary is sufficient only for han-dling simple, elementary needs and ex-pressing basic courtesies.

3. Utterances rarely consist of more than two or three words and show frequent long pauses and repetition of interlocu-tor’s words.

4. Speaker may have some difficulty producing even the simplest utter-ances.

5. Some speakers will be understood only with great difficulty.

The overall focus of this book is method-ological.

We are principally concerned with the how of language teaching, classroom tasks, and techniques.

As a language teacher, you should also be aware of the kinds of grammatical items and patterns that are typically taught to learners at different levels of profiency

Until about twenty-five years ago, an approach to pedagogy called mastery learning was popular in English lan-guage teaching.

In mastery learning, grammatical items were introduced one at a time, and the teacher was supposed to ensure that learners had totally mastered an item before moving on to the next item on the syllabus.

A formula is a piece of language that learners memorize as a single functional

“chunk” without, in the first instance, breaking it down into its different gram-matical elements.

There is no such thing as a simple rule in English. Even rules that at first sight seem straightforward, such as the use of the article system in Eng-lish(when to use a/an, the, or no

article at all), turn out to be quite complex. In fact, an adequate de-scription of the English article system would cover may pages.

1. Keep the learning load man-ageable

Page 17: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

1. We need to simplify, and even over simplify, the grammar for learners in the beginning stages. They will only have a partial understanding at these stages anyway.

What does this mean for teaching grammar to beginning students?

Page 18: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

2. We should help them perceive pat-terns and regularities that can be de-veloped over time as learners “grow their grammar”.

Page 19: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

A popular term for this process is consciousness-raising. Through the exercises and activeities we

present to learners, their awareness of the principles, regularities and rules of the lan-guage is gradually raised. However, in-creasing the load on the learners has to be done gradually. One of the quickest ways of killing motivation is by overloading

beginning learners.

Page 20: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

In order to help learners grow their own grammars, you need to reintro-duce key grammar points at regular intervals.

In the course of this recycling, learn-ers should encounter the target items in different communicative contexts.

2. Recycle

Page 21: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

For example, different forms of the verb be are typically introduced in the context of asking for and giving one’s name:

What is your name? What is his name? What are their names?

Page 22: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

Further encounters might be in terms of asking about and providing one’s home address, email address, and so on.

Page 23: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

From such encounters, learners can begin to make generalizations. They can begin to break down formulaic languages into its various compo-nents. And they can begin to identify relationships between the forms that the language takes and how to use those forms for communicating.

Page 24: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

In attempting to raise learner aware-ness of grammatical principles, you need to consider whether or not you will provide grammatical explana-tions. Many beginning learners, awash in an ocean of uncertainty, crave such explantions.

3.Emphasize inductive over de-ductive teaching

Page 25: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

Unfortunately, as beginners, they will not have the linguistic ability to com-prehend any but the most rudimen-tary explanation, which in any case will be a gross oversimplification be-cause of the reasons already given.

Page 26: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

One alternative to the deductive approach of providing grammar ex-planations is to take an inductive approach. This approach guides learners towards an intuitive under-standing of the rule or principle in question.

Page 27: 영어영문학과 09002096 강정군. 1.Introduction 2.Syllabus design issues 3.Principles for teaching grammar to beginning learners

In summary, here are some principles to keep in mind when teaching be-ginning students.

1. Keep the learning load manage-able.

2. Recycle, recycle, recycle. 3. Place the emphasis on inductive

over deductive learning.
