En el año 2011, el Proyecto Alianzas de UICN en Centroamérica,

desarrolló un proceso de capacitación con dos grupos de

artesanas en la zona fronteriza Costa Rica-Panamá.

In 2011 the UICN

Con cada grupo se

realizaron 7 talleres

de capacitación

de día y medio, y una gira

para hacer contactos

para la comercialización

de sus productos.

7 day and a half workshops

were held with each group,

and a tour to make contacts to

commercialize their products.

Sus habitantes resistieron

la conquista cientos de

años.

Its inhabitants resisted colonization

for hundreds of years.

Talamanca is the most

extensive and populated

indigenous area of Costa Rica.

Talamanca es la tierra

indígena más extensa y

poblada de Costa Rica.

Por ley,

es tierra

exclusiva

de las

familias

indígenas.

Legally the land

is exclusively

held by

indigenous

families.

Por eso “tierra”, en ésta zona, sigue siendo la “madre tierra”

y tierra de familias indígenas que trabajan sus frutos.

Therefore, in this area “the land” continues to be their “mother land”,

the land of the indigenous families who gather its fruit.

ACOMUITA, supported by the Talamanca Development Union

(UDT), accepted the challenge of promoting a group of artisans.

ACOMUITA, con el apoyo de la Unión para el Desarrollo de

Talamanca UDT, aceptó el reto de promover un grupo de

artesanas.

UICN promovió -mediante el

Proyecto Alianzas, financiado por

el Gobierno de Noruega- el

encuentro de una artista con

las artesanas, para juntas

desarrollar un lenguaje

artístico con identidad.

The IUCN, through the Alliances

Project, financed by the

Norwegian government,

sponsored the encounter of an

artist with the artisans to jointly

develop an artistic language

based on their identity.

El proceso se inspira en las artes

tradicionales como el labrado de

jícaras y los tejidos.

This process is inspired by the

traditional art such as the calabash

bowls and woven materials.

The experience of

involved portraying the

landscape and portraying

themselves as women.

They drawed with a pencil but also painted

with local products: cacao, curcuma and the “achiote” fruit.

diseñaron el espacio

The lines and geometric patterns of ancestral cultures

helped them design space with cut leaves.

Derritieron parafina junto con cacao para hacer candelas

aromáticas.

They melted paraffin with cacao to make aromatic candles.

Chorrearon parafina en la cáscara

seca del fruto del cacao para crear

un producto único. Luego las

colgaron con la tradicional cuerda

tejida de la mata de pita.

Pouring the paraffin with the dry

and cured cacao

led to the discovery of the group’s

unique product. The candles were

hung with the traditional cord

woven out of the “pita” plant.

Otras se colocaron

dentro de un mini-

canasto de bejuco real,

extraído de las

montañas.

También crearon

empaques de tela

para las candelas, con

cierres de madera

Others were placed in a mini-basket of

“bejuco” reeds, brought down from the

mountains. Then they made cloth and

wood-buttoned packages for the candles.

Luego sellaron la manta con goma para lograr un lienzo como

soporte para aplicar esténciles.

Raw fabric was sealed with glue to make canvas

as a support for stencils .

una mezcla

de tierra y goma.

Using stencils to block out

areas, they painted the

open spaces with

an earth and glue mix.

Al secar, la tierra a veces se agrietaba. Hasta que encontraron un

lodo de textura suave, en la base de una catarata de agua y en la

espesura de la montaña, que no se agrietaba al secar.

Upon drying, the dirt mixture would sometimes crack,

until they found a soft mud, at the base of a waterfall

and in the thick forest, that did not crack.

El grupo se puso el nombre de artesanas TIERRA TSIRÚ (TIERRA

CACAO).

The group called itself TIERRA TSIRÚ (CACAO

EARTH).

especiales que valoren éste producto único.

TIERRA TSIRÚ is now finding its way to move out

and find places where this unique product is appreciated.

Contar su historia fue parte de la experiencia necesaria para

crear un arte inspirado en su identidad.

Telling one’s story is part of the experience needed

to create art inspired in one’s identity.

A pesar de la colonización, ésta zona de Panamá logró defender su

cultura. Sin embargo, con la llegada de la bananera, cambió todo.

Durante muchos años incluso les prohibieron hablar su lengua en

las escuelas.

Despite colonization, this area of

Panama succeeded

in defending its culture.

Nevertheless, with the coming

of the banana company

everything changed.

For many years speaking

their language at school

was prohibited.

Las abuelas pasaban horas preparando la fibra de pita y tiñéndola

con tintes naturales para tejer los “kra” o chácaras, los bolsos

donde duermen los bebés después de salir del vientre materno.

Grandmothers spent many hours preparing the pita fiber and dying

it with natural colors to weave the “kra”, the bags that cradle babies

after birth.

Al igual que sus abuelas, la mujeres actuales también

aprendieron a hacerlos en la adolescencia y todavía los usan

como cuna, para cargar las cosechas y para la pesca.

Like their grandmothers,

the women today

learned to make them

while adolescents

and still use them

as cradles, or to

carry their farm

products or fish.

“Nuestros vestidos también son parte de nuestra cultura. Los

vestidos y los maquillajes naturales con que se pintaban

hombres y mujeres, tenían figuras geométricas, sobre todo el

triángulo que refleja las montañas del nuestro entorno natural.”

“Our clothes are also part of our culture. Our dresses and the

natural makeup which both men and women use

have geometric figures, especially triangles,

which reflect the mountains in our natural environment.”

Desde tiempos antiguos se usaban pectorales de chakiras o

“cuentas”.

Since times past “chakira” beads covered their chests.

En la actualidad, las artesanas y sus organizaciones tienen un

nuevo interés por recuperar la cultura y cuidar el medio

ambiente, por empoderarse como artesanas y emprendedoras.

Craftswomen and their organizations now have developed

a new interest in recovering their culture

and protecting their environment, by enjoying their

empowerment as craftswomen and entrepreneurs.

Han creado

organizaciones que

las fortalecen; les

permiten enfrentar

el machismo y

obtener

capacitación.

Ahora las

comunidades

indígenas y las

mujeres, conocen

sus derechos y

muchos de sus hijos

e hijas son

profesionales.

They have created

organizations that

bolster

themselves,

helping them to

obtain training and

to face

“machismo”.

The indigenous

communities and

the women now

know their rights

and many of their

children are in the

professions.

El Consorcio Alianza Bocas - del Proyecto Alianzas apoyado por

la cooperación Noruega-y la UICN, apoyaron a la Red de Mujeres

Artesanas, de Bocas del Toro, Panamá, para crear también un

nuevo lenguaje artesanal con base en su identidad.

The Bocas Alliance Consortium, which is part of the Alliances

Project supported by Norway’s cooperation with the UICN,

backed the Network of Craftswomen of Bocas del Toro, Panama,

to develop also a new craft language based on their

ancient identity.

Un ejercicio del grupo fue la

aplicación de los diseños de

sus vestidos en cuadros tipo

“collage” con papeles de

colores.

One group exercise was to

apply their dress designs in

collage type of patterns with

colored paper.

La línea, el triángulo, el contraste del color fueron trasladados

a pequeños diseños que se revisaron en colectivo, analizando

los mejores diseños y lo que se podría mejorar en ellos.

The line, the triangle and the contrasting colors were

transferred to small designs and then reviewed by the group.

Together they analyzed the best designs and those which

could be improved.

Vieron también la necesidad de organizar el espacio

de sus viviendas y de sus tiempos para poder lograr

su producción artística.

They also saw the need to organize the space, in their homes

and in their time, to be able to develop their art production.

Aplicaron sus diseños a varios productos utilitarios como

libretas, camisetas, bolsos.

They applied their designs

to various household items

like notebooks, T shirts and handbags.

Algunas ya tenían productos elaborados. El taller fue un sitio ideal

para analizar la calidad, el precio, y la presentación de éstos

productos.

Some women had well-developed products.

The workshop was an ideal place

to analyze the quality,

price and appearance of these products.

Crearon cuadros de tela basados en los diseños de papel.

They made cloth pictures based on the designs on paper.

Se hicieron ejercicios en blanco y negro para aprender nuevas

new ways to design..

Las “chakiras” o cuentas también se convirtieron en

“joyas” aún más pequeñas, con sus empaques y sus

etiquetas.

The “chakiras” or beads were also made into yet smaller

products. Small “jewels” with their packaging and labels.

with cloth.

Se jugó uniendo “chakiras” con telas.

Se habló del turismo y de la oportunidad de ofrecer productos

pequeños basados en los diseños: PEQUEÑAS JOYAS

para vender a un precio justo.

They talked about tourism and the opportunity to offer small

products based on the designs: SMALL JEWELS

to be sold at a fair price.

Luego salieron a conversar con posibles clientes.

Later they went out to talk with possible clients.

Marketing these “jewels”

should adequately pay

for their cultural-historic value,

their unique creative value,

as well as the hand labor involved.

The production and sale

of contemporary crafts

with cultural identity

at fair prices can generate

an improved quality of life

in their communities.

La producción y venta de productos

artesanales contemporáneos con identidad y

precios de venta adecuados, puede generar

una mejor calidad de vida para las

comunidades.

La artesanía puede transformar la vida de las mujeres indígenas

y rurales de Centroamérica, si se da seguimiento y dirección

técnica en las etapas desde la concepción del producto hasta la

producción, comercialización y mercadeo.

Art and crafts transform the lives of indigenous and rural

craftswomen of Central America, if their is follow-up and technical

direction from the original conception of a product

up to its production, commercialization and marketing.

- - - - Talleres prácticos y sistemáticos con los grupos de mujeres

en sus regiones, potencian su crecimiento y mejoran sus

destrezas.Practical and systematic workshops with women in their own

regions, enables their growth and the development of their

skills.

De ésta manera, la producción de artesanías logra reunir la

calidad requerida por el mercado.

This way, their products acquire the quality the market

demands.

Así, La UICN lleva a la práctica la Resolución 4.055 aprobada en el

Congreso de Barcelona 2008, enfocada en impulsar y orientar

“la integración de la cultura y la gestión ambiental y la conexión

entre diversidad cultural y diversidad biológica…”

Thus the IUCN is carrying out

Resolution 4055 of the Barcelona

Congress of 2008, focusing on

promoting and directing

“the integration of culture and

environmental management

and the connection between

cultural and biological diversity…”

Todo ello “para el desarrollo

humano, la identidad y

autonomía cultural,

bases fundamentales

para la buena gobernanza

de los recursos naturales.”

stewardship of natural resources.”
