• Pandemic : Epidemic

Drivers, Migration workers, prostitut

ターゲットを絞る (e.g., sex workers and clients, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men)
FASID

予防HIV 予防の ABC• A means Abstinence: 性行為を控える• B means Being Safer: 特定のパートナーを決

Source: Hogle, et al., USAID, 2002

Measuring the Impacts of Working-age Adult Mortality on Small-Scale Farm Households in
Kenya
Takashi Yamano* and Thomas Jayne**

World Development, vol.32 (1): 91-119, 2004
FASID
Introduction• In Kenya, 13.9 percent of adults age (15-49) are HIV positive
(UNAIDS, 2000)• Impact of AIDS on farm production and food security?
Empirical evidence is still thin:
– Barnett and Blaikie (1992) & Barnett et al (1995)
– Beegle (1997) in Kagera, Tanzania
FASID
The purpose of this study
This study estimates the impact of prime-age adult mortality on– Household composition (family labor)
Can Kenyan households maintain their family labor stock by bringing in outsiders?
– Farm Production
Can they maintain cultivated land size?
Can they maintain production level? – Assets and off-farm income

2. Data– The first and third waves of a nation-wide-thre
e-year panel (1997, 2000, & 2002) – 1,266 rural households – We found 146 “prime-age” adult deaths – 54 of them (37%) from Kisumu/Siaya districts

FindingsKenyan rural households are unable to offset their loses of adult
members
– Exception: non-head male members– The death of a head increases the dependency
ratio by 0.89
The death of a head reduces
– Total cultivated land size by 26 percent– Plot level output by 60 percent– The number of non-farm asset items

Conclusions• Short-run impact vs. long-run effects• Only short-run impact was examined in this paper• When it has an impact on farm production, it is devastating• The assessment of AIDS impact is difficult
– It is multi-dimensional– The process is slow and gradual – Households and individuals may move out and in the sample
frame work• But it is necessary to carry out effective safety net programs
