On New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Park

從紐約愛樂的露天音樂會談起

Author’s biography: Dr. Chin-Hao Chen holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from National Taiwan University, Taiwan and a Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University, New York, USA. He has strong interest in promoting popular science. He was once the chief editor for Sciscape; now he is a special contributor to Center for the Advancement of Science Education (CASE), National Taiwan University. Back to college time, he was the President of Philharmonic Club. He loves all kinds of classical music. Chen currently works as a Distinguished Junior Fellow at Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics, National Taiwan University.

OnJune17,2015,NewYorkPhilharmonicheldthefirstConcertinthePark(CentralPark)thisyear.AlanGilbert, theMusicDirector,arrangedaprogramofpurelyAmericanworksandinvitedthepopularAmericanviolinist,JoshuaBell,as thesoloist. Itwasestimated that tensofthousandspeopleattended thisgatheringat thissummernightofbreeze.

今年的 6 月 17 日，紐約愛樂在中央公園的大草坪 (Great Lawn) 揭開了他們 2015 樂季公園音樂會的序幕。音樂總監 AlanGilbert排出了全場美國作曲家的曲目，並邀請了美國當紅的小提琴家 Joshua Bell 擔任小提琴獨奏。全場至少有數萬人同時在夏夜的微風裡參與了這場盛會。

On theGreat Lawn in Central Park, tens ofthousandsNewYorkerswerehaving snacksordrinks,standinguporsittingdown,andlisteningtothisNewYorkPhilharmonicourdoorconcert.FormanyNewYorkers,this is anessentialpartof summer,or,moreprecisely,themost importantoutdoormusicevent throughout thesummer.However,itwasnotthat“taken-for-granted”atthebeginning.

在中央公園的大草坪上，數萬紐約客或許吃著小點心，或許喝著飲料，或站或坐，欣賞著紐約愛樂演出的音樂會。對許多紐約人而言，這是夏天不可或缺的一部分，更可以說是紐約客夏天最重要的戶外音樂盛事。但是事實上，這在一開始並不是理所當然的概念。

TheNewYork Philharmonicwas founded in1842; itwas theoldest orchestra inAmericanhistory.Formorethan100years,musicianswhocooperatedwiththisorchestrawereallstars in theirgenerations—GustavMahler,ArturoToscanini,andLeonardBernsteinbecameitsmusicdirectors at different times.They conductednumerous classicalmusic concerts inNewYork andaround theworld.They representedAmericanclassicalmusic.Ofcourse,mostof theseconcerts—composedofvariousprograms--werehosted inside themusichallandforaudiencewithpurchasedtickets.Asaresult,thefamousmusiccritic,HaroldC.Schonberg,wrotein the New York Times in1965that“Byandlargethecitizensareproudoftheirgreatorchestra;and,byandlarge, thecitizenshaveneverheardit.”

紐約愛樂創立於 1842 年，是美國歷史最悠久的管弦樂團。一百多年來，跟紐約愛樂合作的音樂家都是一時之選，從馬勒，托斯卡尼尼，到伯恩斯坦都曾擔任過樂團的音樂總監。他們為紐約帶來了無數的古典音樂會，同時也巡迴全世界，成為美國古典音樂的代言人。當然，他們的演出幾乎都是在音樂廳裡，為購票欣賞演出的聽眾演出各式的古典音樂曲目。所以紐約愛樂的知名樂評人 HaroldC.Schonberg在 1965 年於紐約時報便提到：「我們這一行的人常常忘記紐約愛樂在我們這個城市的特殊角色，大部分的市民都以紐約愛樂為傲，但是大部分的市民都沒有聽過紐約愛樂。」

It is not hard tounderstand, though—concertsin themusic hall usually accommodate up to 2000people.What’smore, ifyoudon’tbuy the tickets,yousimplycannotenter thehall.Nevertheless, in1965, thePhilharmonicadministrator,CarlosMoseley,thoughtabouthostingoutdoorconcertsonthegrassinCentralPark.HewaslatercompletelysupportedbythemayorofNewYork,RobertF.Wagner—theoutdoorconcertswereexpandedfromCentralPark toall5boroughs inNewYork.Thetraditionofoutdoorconcertswas thenestablished. It isestimated that,since1965,more than14millionpeoplehaveattendedthisfeaturedgathering.

這其實不難理解，因為紐約愛樂在音樂廳的演出，一次聽眾大約就是兩千人左右，而且不買票入場就沒有辦法聽到演出。但是在 1965 年的時候，紐約愛樂的行政總監 CarlosMoseley想到了利用中央公園的大草坪來辦戶外音樂會的想法，並得到當時的紐約市長RobertF.Wagner的大力支持：不但在中央公園演出，更擴及到紐約市的五大行政區，從此奠定了紐約愛樂公園音樂會的傳統。據估計，自 1965 年開始，參加過這項盛事的聽眾已經超過了一千四百萬人。

Although these areoutdoor concerts, theNewYork Philharmonic sets up the rules clearly at thebeginning—thesearenotpopsconcerts; instead, thesetarget athavingoutdoor audience to enjoy themusicwith thesamequalityas the indoorone.Consequently,the first outdoor concert,whichwasheldonAugust10, 1965, included theAmerican composerWilliamSchuman’sPhilharmonic Fanfare,Wagner’sPrelude(inAct1) fromThe Master-Singers of Nuremberg (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg),andBeethoven’sSymphony No. 9.They set thebar veryhigh for later concerts.

儘管是戶外音樂會，紐約愛樂從一開始就把標準訂得很清楚，他們不走通俗音樂會的形式，而是要讓戶外的聽眾享受到跟音樂廳聽眾同樣等級的音樂會。所以他們 1965 年 8 月 10 日的第一場公園音樂會，排出的曲目是美國作曲家WilliamSchuman的Philharmonic Fanfare，華格納的 < 紐倫堡的名歌手> 第一幕前奏曲，還有貝多芬的 < 第九號交響曲 >，

從此為紐約愛樂的戶外音樂會立下了標 竿 。

Sincethen,anyone—manorwoman,oldoryoung,richorpoor—canappreciate thehigh-standardmusicalperformancesof theNewYorkPhilharmonic for free.Theorchestra isnotonlywhatNewYorkersareproudofbutonlyenriches thecultural life inNewYork. ItbecomesanintegratedpartofaNewYorker.Afterall,artisnotonlyforselectedonesbutforeveryone—everyonedeserves thechanceforexperiencingthebeautyof life.

自此之後，不分男女老幼，不論身份地位，任何人都有機會可以免費 欣賞紐約愛樂的高水準演出。紐約愛樂從此不但是紐約人的驕傲，更豐富了紐約的文化生活，成為紐約客生活的一部分。畢竟，藝術不是少數人獨享的權利，而應該是每個人都能有機會接觸欣賞的美好事物。
