READING COMPREHENSION

There is one passage from a previous SBIclerical exam (About 400 words).

PASSAGE - 1

Directions (Q.No. 1-10): Read the followingpassage carefully and answer the questionsgiven below. Certain words are given in boldto help you locate them while answeringsome of the questions.(from SBI CLERICAL MAIN EXAM 2014)Akbar was the son of humble parents. His

father was a school master. There was nevermuch money in the house so he did not enjoyluxuries. All he wanted was to learn more and

more. Books were not easily available then asthey were hand written and very expensive.Akbar read all the books he could lay hishands on. In due course he mastered Arabic,Persian, Philosophy and Astronomy anddreamt of a position at court. But for this, onehad to excel in some field. Also one needed apatron, CLOSE enough to the Emperor to rec-

ommend a newcomer. It was a few monthsbefore he could find a patron and a few moremonths before he could find a suitable oppor-tunity to recommend him to the Emperor whoasked what he had learnt and what work hecould do. On hearing the same, he said, "Weare pleased to give the young man a chance.Let him take charge of the royal poultryhouse!" When he heard the news, Akbar washeartbroken. He, a scholar, capable of debat-ing with the most learned men was asked tolook after clucking hens! All the same he gotdown to work with great DETERMINATION.His only concern was hens. He saw to it thatthey were well fed and had clean water andthat their living quarters were clean and If a

fowl took ill that it was separated from theother and given proper treatment. Meanwhilethe Emperor had forgotten about the scholarhe had packed off to mind the hen. But hisminister was reading out the palace accountsto tell the Emperor how much money hadbeen spent on the royal household, he men-

tioned such a low figure that the Emperor satup "Have most of the hens died? he asked."No your Majesty" was the reply. "The hensare not only alive but are plump and fit.""Send for the scholar" the Emperor demand-ed.

When Akbar came to the palace theEmperor demanded, "Aren't you feeding thehens properly?" I am sir, only the feed is dif-ferent. I am feeding them what cannot be usedat the royal kitchen, vegetable peels andthough used to seal the vessels while cookingfor your Majesty. The hens not only enjoy it,but it is also good for them. "Good work, wehereby promote you to the rank of royal librar-ian. "Akbar was BITTERLY disappointed. Hehad spent the last thirty years of his life gain-ing knowledge. Now he wished to air thatknowledge and help people. Instead as thehead of the royal library he would be caring foronly books and no people. But he buckleddown to organise the library.

A year later, the Emperor came to visit thelibrary. He was surprised to find each bookcovered with a jacket of velvet or brocade. There were hundreds of books and not onewithout a cover. "You have used expensivematerial to cover the books but have notcharged us", said the Emperor. "Surely youare not spending your own money?" AkbarBOWED low "Your Majesty these covers didnot cost anything. Everyday dozens of peoplecome to the court with humble grievances onsheets of paper which are folded and placedinside a bag of the most EXPENSIVE materi-al that they can afford. The Majesty's ministerstake out the paper to read the requests.
