< Abstract >
Confucan Culture and Family In Korea
Shim , Paek-Seop
This paper dea1s with the resu1ts of historica1 anthropology
and anthropo1ogical approaches into modern family in Korea.
Religion. the cu1tura1 system of symbo1ism , needs to be
understood not on1y as the individua1 expression of subjective
ideas but a1so as the social expression within interactive
relationship.
The historica1 anthropologica1 approach into Confucian cu1ture
in Korea is important for discerning the distinctiveness of
Korean Confucianism in historica1 context and for deeply
understanding the emphasis on practica1 aspects and 1iturgical
interest which are the charactertics of Korean Confucianism
We a1so explored the historcia1 context about how agnatic
princip1e and ancestra1 cult had been conneded with
socio-economic discrimination system. Compared with Chinese
Confucianism Korean Confucianism distinctive1y showed much
more interest in the po1itica1 and psycho1ogical va1ues including
social status and prestige than in the material va1ues.
As Korea experienced modernization , urbanization.
industralization , post-modernization , and globalization the
traditiona1 Confucian va1ue systems in Korea were selected or
excluded or used strategically on the individua1 1eve1 and the
various level of groups such as state , enterprises , local societies.

kin. lineage. and family. Recently Korean Confucian culture in
family shows both continuity and discontinuity through new
historical situations and experiences. Obviously. traditional
Confucian family system seems to weeken as modern westernized
concept of family has been continually introduced and Korea has
succeeded in its economical industralization and political
democratization. However. it is also convincing that traditional
Confucian concepts and the Confucian principle of family have
continued or changed its form to the adaptable one in the
situation of Korean capitalism and enterprise culture.
Key Words: historical anthropology. Confucian culture in
Korean history. agnatic principle. ancestr cult. discrimination.
