The Lyrical-historical Basis of the NovelRaka the Land of Rasciaby amil Sijari

S u m m a r y

The novels and stories of amil Sijari are reviewed in the context of standardhomeland prose, which they transcend owing to a lyrical vision of reality. In a spontane-ous literary manner, these works link diverse cultural, social, religious and other charac-teristics of the Sanjak area and the life of individuals there, which Sijari takes as thebasic subject of his literary work. Owing to a high degree of the picturesqueness of itslinguistic, folklore and ethnological characteristics, this area assumes the status of anaesthetic literary fact estranged in advance. In Raka the Land of Rascia, amilSijaris last and best novel, which reaches furthest into the past of the Serbian peopleof all his historical works, this author gives a rich and lyrically shaped narrative pictureof the life of a large, well-to-do Serbian family living between the Lim valley and NoviPazar at the time of the retreat of the Turkish Army from Austria following its defeat

near Vienna in 1683. Owing to its pronounced stylistic-linguistic characteristics and itsview of history as a deterministic repetition of the never-changing relations between thepowerful authorities and unprotected individuals and the people,Raka the Land ofRascia has the qualities of a non-standard historical novel, such as those created inrecent Serbian prose by some of our best writers. This novel, like the remainder ofSijaris prose, stresses the connections with oral folk tradition and legends, and withthe echoes of Oriental philosophy and a direct experience of reality.
