The bastion of hope was aptly named due to the grandeur of the buildings, seeing the twisting spires andfloating crystals created by magic inspired many to take up the wand or staff and learn if they were indeedcapable.

Schools were formed in order to teach the kids of their potential, and at the tender age of twelve boys wouldattempt to become apprentice knights and pick up the sword. Any boy who could become an apprentice notonly brought great fame to their family, but also would be given a monthly stipend to spend and would nolonger fear poverty.

Willem Saye was one such boy whom had tried to achieve an apprenticeship. With black hair and green eyes,Willem did not stand out compared to any other children. His features were unrefined but gave out a kind ofscholarly elegance, and within his eyes shimmered a small light of hope. Though his stature was only fourfeet or so, he was almost all skin and bones. Due to not having enough food he suffered from severemalnourishment, which plagued him every night. After his Father died to magical beasts and his Motherpassed due to grief, he was left only with bitter memories and a pendant he kept locked away in a small chestunder a floorboard where he was staying.

Once he had been left all alone, he learned quickly that in order to survive in the world, one would have towork or steal. He immediately applied to the knights apprenticeship, in order to make sure he at least hadmoney to spend and would not starve.

All applicants were accepted for the apprenticeship as long as you were of a certain age. Willem had justturned twelve and was accepted after they had confirmed his bone density through nature magic. For threegrueling months he was put under hellish training with boys similarly his age. Mediocre meals, and incrediblepressure weighed down on the minds of the children. Blood and sweat poured from the youths as they ranmarathons everyday, carrying weights that would even make adults struggle. This was not just a test of theirbody but a test of their mind as well, the conviction to see something through to the end was important to thearmy who everyday fought life and death battle.

The children were provided with barracks and had slowly begun to truly appreciate the companionship theyhad, in this hellish landscape they only had their brothers to rely on until the end.

Willem would often seek out two other children, whom he had become well acquainted with in this smallframe of time. The brothers Eli and Mark had taken a liking to this small young boy whom had no definingfeatures and was quite underwhelming, which made them stand out even more. Willem understood that theonly reason they kept him company was due to this fact, but it did not bother him. Having someone to pick youup when you fell down to exhaustion was more important than standing out for him.

Through thick and thin, these three stayed together and trained together, each improving while sparringamong themselves. On occasion knights would appear to see if they could find some outstanding talent tomentor, and Eli would take the lead and suppress Mark and Willem to show his superiority to the knights.

At the end of the training, the final test was to begin. The rules were simple, two children would face off incombat and only one could leave the ring willingly. Maiming was allowed but you could not take the life ofanother.

After fifteen separate fights between these young children; ten were all one sided victories, four were closefought matches and one was a draw, to which both were disqualified. Both Eli and Mark had won their battles,Eli using his superior reach to knock the opponents weapon away and Mark used tactics to force theopponent out of the ring. That hammered down even more to Willem that he needed a quick and precisevictory so that none could doubt his martial prowess.

As he entered the stage to fight he realized that his opponent was the undisputed number one for theapprenticeship. His pupils shrunk and he cursed his luck as the boy approached Willem on stage. Willemquickly realized just how much of a difference there was between himself and the reputed number one.Standing nearly half a foot taller and much bulkier than Willem, this boy was almost the same size as someadults.

Willem reached out his hand as a show of good sportsmanship, hoping to be spared at least a little dignityafter his inevitable defeat. The large youth swiped Willem's hand away and readied his weapon.
