Roberto Michele Buttarazzi (Robert Michaels) was raised in the picturesque, ancient mountainside town of Arpino, about 95 kilometers southeast of Rome. It was there that Robert first heard the music that would stoke his ambition.

“The name change to Robert Michaels came with the demand for a CD of music from my show,” he says. “I began the recording and decided that I didn’t want to use the name Roberto Michele Buttarazzi because it’s too long and hard to pronounce. I decided to use my middle name, Michele, and that evolved to Robert Michaels.”

 Michaels’ debut CD, Paradiso, would ultimately sell more than 100,000 copies in Canada, an extraordinary achievement for an instrumental artist. His impressive sales figures and a Juno Award nomination for Instrumental Artist of the Year following the release of his sophomore album, Arizona, caught the attention of Warner Music in Canada, who would ultimately sign him for the release of his third album, Utopia, in 1998. His fourth CD, Allegro, released in 2003, won Michaels the Juno Award for Best Instrumental Album.

Michaels received nominations as a best vocalist, instrumentalist and album for his self-titled fifth album, a two-CD set. That was followed by The Spanish Guitar Collection, a compilation of instrumental compositions from his previous six CDs, all of which have exceeded gold and platinum sales status.

Dr. Temple Grandin didn’t talk until she was 3 and a half years old, communicating her frustration instead by screaming, peeping and humming. In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism, and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. She tells her story of “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book Emergence: Labeled Autistic, a book that stunned the world because, until its publication, most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life. She eventually found a mentor who recognized her interests and abilities.

Dr. Grandin developed her talents into a successful career as a livestock-handling-equipment designer, one of very few in the world. She has now designed the facilities in which half the cattle are handled in the United States, consulting for firms such as Burger King, McDonald’s, Swift and others.

Her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes, has been brought to the screen in the recent award-winning HBO movie Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes. She has been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), as well as major television programs, including the BBC special The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow, ABC’s Primetime Live, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20. She has also been written about in many national publications, including Time Magazine, People Magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report and The New York Times.

Dr. Grandin’s visit is a fundraising event sponsored by the EIU Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, the EIU Center for the Humanities, and the Doudna Fine Arts Center. Proceeds will provide initial funding for an autism center at EIU.

In the 13th century, Hazrat Yameenuddin Abul-Hasan Amir Khusrou, a legendary musician, unparalleled poet, soldier, Sufi and philosopher, trained a group of 12 young men in the art of qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional music. Named the Qawal Bachchay Gharana of Delhi (or Delhi Gharana), this prominent musical tradition has been practiced by descendants of the original members for more than 700 years.

Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers (direct descendants of Khusrou) of Pakistan, live in Karachi on an alley named Qawwal Bachhon Ki Gali (literally translated to “Qawwal children’s alley”). They have toured throughout Europe performing in seminars, festivals and symposiums for the general public and government dignitaries.

The award-winning ensemble presents qawwali singing in various languages including Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Birj Bhasha, Poorbi and Sanskrit, as well as in English.

The Doudna Fine Arts Center is in its second year of a two-year partnership with Arts Midwest as the only Illinois location to host World Fest performances. An Arts Midwest initiative, the 2011-13 Arts Midwest World Fest is generously sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, 3M Foundation and MetLife Foundation. A one-man show that looks at a first-year Los Angeles Unified School District teacher’s experience teaching in the heart of South-Central Los Angeles. The show examines and explores the interaction of two elementary school students and their families with Mr. Fry, as each is confronted with both personal and family tragedies. They Call Me Mister Fry is a true story about students and teachers and life, performed by what is today a 10-year LAUSD teaching veteran.

Starring Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Stormy Weather: The Lena Horne Project is about Hollywood’s first African-American goddess, from her reign at MGM’s “dream factory” to a fabled night club seductress and civil rights icon.

Stormy Weather is a living, breathing biography featuring rare audio clips, video footage, true stories and thrilling performances.

Stormy Weather is based on the celebrated book Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne (Simon & Schuster 2009) by James Gavin, who also narrates this multimedia theatrical experience. Mike Renzi (seven-time Emmy Award-winner), who served as the musical director for Lena Horne’s show The Lady and Her Music on Broadway in 1981, created the orchestrations for this show.

After many years of touring almost exclusively as a solo classical guitarist, Petar Jankovic entered the world of chamber music in 2008 with an innovative idea: a traditional string quartet led by guitar! The guitar’s Spanish and Latin American performing practices, blended with the string quartet’s classical European music tradition, infuse an inventive vigor and inspirational outlook.

PJE covers a wide range of repertoire with idiomatic and expressive renditions: from early music jewels of Scarlatti, Vivaldi and Boccerini to traditional Spanish works by Albeniz, De Falla and Granados. Passionate Piazzolla tangos and rich Brazilian music forms of Gnattalli, Bellinati and Villa-Lobos are performed alongside exotic Balkan/Gypsy traditions and new classical works by contemporary composers such as Roland Dyens, Elliott Bark and Jonathan Godfrey.

The musicians are Sophie Bird (New Zealand) on Violin 1, Grace Kim (Korea/Canada) on Violin 2, Rose Wollman (USA) on Viola, Maria Martinez (Spain) on Cello, and Petar Jankovic (USA/Serbia) on guitar.

When it comes to saxophonist/vocalist/composer/lyricist/arranger Grace Kelly, people seem to be divided into two groups: those who marvel at her proficiency, creativity and ever-accelerating growth, and those who have yet to encounter the 19-year-old wunderkind.

She’s been named one of the “Top 10 College Women in 2011” by Glamour Magazine; voted “Best Jazz Act” in Boston four consecutive years in the FNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll; received the ASCAP Foundation’s Young Jazz Composers Award in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011; and won “Jazz Artist of the Year” at the Boston Music Awards in both 2008 and 2010. The 2009, 2010 and 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll added to their list naming her one of the “Alto Saxophone Rising Stars,” the youngest ever to be named so.

Born Grace Chung, she became Grace Kelly after her mother divorced and remarried and her stepfather, Bob Kelly, legally adopted Grace and her sister Christina. The strong classical music background of her mother’s family led Grace to begin piano lessons at age 6, and she still does much of her composing at the piano as she sings wordlessly. She began to study the clarinet at her elementary school in the fourth grade, and began private saxophone lessons a few months later. Singing, dancing, writing songs and theater were also early passions.

Since age 12, Grace has performed more than 500 concerts as a leader all around the world at prominent venues such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Apollo Theater, Birdland and many more, and in venues as far away as Europe and Asia.

Grace began attending Berklee College of Music on full scholarship at age 16. She graduated in December 2011 at age 19.

More than North America’s premiere wind quintet, the Grammy-nominated Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States.

Imani Winds actively seeks to engage new music and new voices into the modern classical idiom -- from Mendelssohn, Jean Françaix, György Ligeti and Luciano Berio to Astor Piazzolla, Elliott Carter, John Harbison and Mohammed Fairouz; and to the unexpected ranks of Paquito D’Rivera and Wayne Shorter.

Imani Winds enjoys frequent national exposure in all forms of media, including two features on NPR’s All Things Considered, appearances on APM’s Saint Paul Sunday, NPR’s Performance Today and News and Notes with Ed Gordon, and BBC’s The World, as well as frequent coverage in major music magazines and

newspapers including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Their excellence and influences have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2007 ASCAP Award and the 2002 CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, as well as the CMA/WQXR Award for their debut and self-released CD Umoja. Harriet Washington is an award-winning medical writer and editor, and the author of the best-selling book Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present and Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corporate Takeover of Life Itself. In her work, she focuses mainly upon bioethics; history of medicine; African-American health issues; and the intersection of medicine, ethics and culture.

Medical Apartheid, the first social history of medical research with African-Americans, was chosen as one of Publishers’ Weekly’s Best Books of 2006. The book also won the National Book Critics Circle Nonfiction Award, a PEN award, 2007 Gustavus Myers Award, and Nonfiction Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Experts have praised its scholarship, accuracy and insights.

Her other books include Parkinson’s Disease, a monograph published by Harvard Health Publications; and Living Healthy with Hepatitis C. She is co-author of Health and Healing for African Americans.

Washington has also worked as a laboratory technician, as a medical social worker and as the manager of a poison-control center/suicide hotline, and has performed as an oboist and as a classical-music announcer for WXXI-FM, a PBS affiliate in Rochester, N.Y. She lives in New York City with her husband, Ron DeBose.

Julie Speidel often works at the intersection between fi guration and abstraction, suggesting the human form through combinations of elegantly simple shapes. “The inspiration for my work is rooted in the power of travel,” says Speidel. Her sculptures assimilate cultural infl uences in a manner reminiscent of traveloque -- organic and intuitive, not academic or preordained. Miller’s paintings have been described as “meticulously rendered, fi nely wrought realist sci-fi fantasies of a bio-medical graveyard that take place in the (maybe not-so-distant) future: after the experiments have concluded and the labs have been abandoned.” Some of his more recent works, painted-on vintage photographs, also deal with the issue of appropriation.

Miller is an assistant professor of studio art at Southeast Missouri State University. He has a B.A. and M.A. from Eastern Illinois University and an M.F.A. from The University of Notre Dame, and is represented by Zg Gallery in Chicago.

Carmon Colangelo, dean of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, is a widely exhibited artist known for large mixed-media prints that combine digital and traditional processes. His most recent works deal with the phenomenon of globalization and the disappearance of local culture, and the gradual homogenization of American life.

Colangelo’s art has been featured in 20 solo shows and dozens of group exhibitions worldwide, and has been collected by many of the nation’s leading museums. This program is co-sponsored by the EIU Department of Art and the Tarble Arts Center.

The College of Arts and Humanities encompasses 13 departments and areas ranging from art to women’s studies. The Doudna Fine Arts Center also hosts speakers from various areas of the humanities, under the guidance of the new EIU Center for the Humanities and its director, Dr. Janet Marquardt.

Dr. Temple Grandin didn’t talk until she was 3 and a half years old, communicating her frustration instead by screaming, peeping and humming. In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism, and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. She tells her story of “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book Emergence: Labeled Autistic, a book that stunned the world because, until its publication, most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life. She eventually found a mentor who recognized her interests and abilities.

Dr. Grandin developed her talents into a successful career as a livestock-handling-equipment designer, one of very few in the world. She has now designed the facilities in which half the cattle are handled in the United States, consulting for fi rms such as Burger King, McDonald’s, Swift and others.

Her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes, has been brought to the screen in the recent award-winning HBO movie Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes. She has been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), as well as major television programs, including the BBC special The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow, ABC’s Primetime Live, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20. She has also been written about in many national publications, including Time Magazine, People Magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report and The New York Times.

Dr. Grandin’s visit is a fundraising event sponsored by the EIU Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, the EIU Center for the Humanities, and the Doudna Fine Arts Center. Proceeds will provide initial funding for an autism center at EIU.

Harriet Washington is an award-winning medical writer and editor, and the author of the best-selling book Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present and Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corporate Takeover of Life Itself. In her work, she focuses mainly upon bioethics; history of medicine; African-American health issues; and the intersection of medicine, ethics and culture.

Medical Apartheid, the fi rst social history of medical research with African-Americans, was chosen as one of Publishers’ Weekly’s Best Books of 2006. The book also won the National Book Critics Circle Nonfi ction Award, a PEN award, 2007 Gustavus Myers Award, and Nonfi ction Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Experts have praised its scholarship, accuracy and insights.

Her other books include Parkinson’s Disease, a monograph published by Harvard Health Publications; and Living Healthy with Hepatitis C. She is co-author of Health and Healing for African Americans.

Washington has also worked as a laboratory technician, as a medical social worker and as the manager of a poison-control center/suicide hotline, and has performed as an oboist and as a classical-music announcer for WXXI-FM, a PBS affi liate in Rochester, N.Y. She lives in New York City with her husband, Ron DeBose.

for the upcoming performance season.

The best part of our discount packages is you pick the tickets you want, not us! Choose any combination of events and the discount applies!

$100 - $200: take a 10 percent discount off of your total order $201 - $300: take a 15 percent discount $301 and up: take a 20 percent discount

Plus, receive an additional Early Bird 5 percent discount if your order is postmarked or received by 5 p.m. Friday, August 24.*
