Our Role in Addressing Discipline
PCSB assess discipline policies when new applicant groups apply for a charter
When schools are up for charter review, PCSB works with the schools on revising charter goals, including goals around discipline
Schools’ discipline policies are posted on PCSB’s website. All must have the following: Clear explanation of
infractions, consequences and due process
Explanation of disciplinary steps for students with disabilities
PCSB analyzes discipline data monthly to look for trends, and alerts schools when they are an outlier with their rate of disciplinary incidences.

• PCSB audited schools with unusual data trends to ensure accuracy of data submission
• Some schools with tough excused absence policies in turn have high truancy rates
Truancy: Highest Rates

• The PCSB Truancy Policy seeks to reduce absenteeism by helping schools focus resources on families who need the most help while allowing schools to show improvements within the school year.
• 10 schools received Notice of Concern-of these, 7 schools had it lifted due to improvements in attendance (for the other three: 1 closed, 1 is no longer a charter, 1 will continue to be monitored this year)
• The Policy is enforced by a dashboard which allow schools and PCSB staff to track improvement in attendance at the school and student level.
Our Role in Addressing Chronic Absenteeism
9/4/14 17
2014 Revised Truancy Policy
Schools are notified in real time when they reach the thresholds (not quarterly reports)—encourages schools to implement strategies more expeditiously
Same thresholds: 20% for Elem/ Middle; 25% for High School 35% for Alternative Schools
Continued Citywide Collaboration
Data sharing with other District agencies to assist them in implementing their policies
Charter school compliance in mandatory reporting improved over 20% from SY 2012-13 to SY 2013-14. PCSB will continue monthly reconciliation calls with CFSA
