    DEAR FELLOW ROTARI ANS,

I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotary: values of service and responsibility,of respect for family and for others. Sometimes I call Confucius the world's first Rotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years before Rotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was: . In English, you say, It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness. I think that one line sums up the way we in Rotary approach the problems of the world. There is so much diffi culty. There are so many people who need help. Many people look at this and say, There is nothing I can do. So they do nothing andnothing changes. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one candle, you light one candle and so do 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together, we can do so much more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can light up the world. In 2014-15, I am asking each of you to light your own Rotary candle and Light Up Rotary together. There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary . I hope many of you will choose to host a Rotary Day, to show your community what Rotary is and what we do. I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new members into Rotary including your own spouses and family. Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light Up Rotary is to fi nish the job we've been working on for more than a quarter of a century: the eradication of polio. We are so close to our goal. But we will get there only if we keep up the fi ght, keep up the momentum, and close the funding gap for the polio endgame plan. Light Up Rotary is our theme for this year, but it is more than just a theme. It is howwe in Rotary see the world and our role in it. We believe that no one should sit alonein the darkness. Instead, we can come together, all 1.2 million of us, to Light Up Rotary . This is our goal and my challenge to you.

Monthly Message from District Governor Audi July 2014

    My dear fellow Rotarians,

After a long period of preparation, a new journey for our district and the Rotary Year of 2014-15 has finally begun. First of all, I would like to congratulate all the club presidents and all the leaders in our team that you have officially taken the positions and are ready to start a new page of the year. I believe that with all your engagement 2014-15 will be a fabulous and unforgettable year for our Rotary family. One of the most essential objectives is membership development. We hope that the membership in the Mandarin region could reach 40,000 in order to promote and make Mandarin become one of the official languages of RI. If we succeed in doing so, we would be able to use Traditional Chinese in all of the RI events, which would be a great convenience for us. With the efforts and hard works from our district and the other six districts, the membership has already exceeded 30,000 in Taiwan. I believe that, as all of you continuously engage in membership development while strategically putting focuses on spouses, female members and the new generation, the target of 40,000 members will be easily achieved. The year of 2014-15 is the year we, as Taiwanese, should be all proud of. RI president, Gary Huang, is the first president from Taiwan since Rotary was founded. The theme of this year, Light Up Rotary, means that if each Rotarian could light up one candle, together we can light up the world. Together, we help more people who are in need. Together, we let people in the world know the greatness of Rotary and attract more people, who recognise Rotary and share the same interest in service as we do, to join us. And together, we create a magnificent world through Rotary with belief of integrity and strength of kindness. As Taiwanese Rotarians, we ought to give full support to Garys belief. Moreover, we shall proactively invite more people to join Rotary and become part of our family and further do our part in achieving RIs aspiration of 1,300,000 members around the world.

The main service projects of our district this year are Life of Bridge scholarship and Taiwan Liver Disease Eradication Initiative and so on and so forth. We shall gather our strength to support students who are in straitened circumstances and to eradicate hepatopathy in Taiwan. Let us all together to help and support our own people. In the past few months, I had countless meetings with every club presidents and club leaders. In those meetings, we planned and reviewed projects, and also set goals for this year.I hereby ask all of you to fulfil what we had planned and set. I believe that by doing so, it would bring prosperity and progress to your clubs and services. Finally, I sincerely give my gratitude to all the club presidents, district team members and my fellow Rotarians for your dedications and services. Let us together Light Up Rotary.

    RIP Gary RIP Gary

Elected for the 2014-15 term, Gary C.K. Huang is Rotary's first Chinese president.

Growing up in Taiwan, Huang was encouraged by his father to get involved in activities and clubs -- and not simply focus on grades.

Helping others, his father said, would help him become a better leader. The message stuck. In 1976, Huang joined the Rotary Club of Taipei.

And despite the pressures of a successful career and growing family, Huang made time for his club: "I wanted to continue my work in Rotary no matter what." Combining family with humanitarian service is important to Huang, whose wife and three grown children are also Rotary members. "Why leave your family to do your Rotary work? You can do it together. Then doing good becomes a family event."
