Raise your own professional competenceThe present situations:

Some teachers’ pronunciation and intonation are not good. Most teachers lead a class in reading aloud word by word. Many students seldom listen to the tape. They can’t read

English sentence by sentence, but they read it word by word instead.

A number of teachers know little about teaching methods, so they can’t use flexible strategy in class.

Some teachers are lacking in enthusiasm for work. Smiles of pleasure never pass across their faces.

Speak too much Chinese in English classes.

Page 9: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions:

Make great efforts to learn international phonetic symbols well.

Let students listen to the tape more and read after the teacher less.

Study many different kinds of teaching methods and learn from others’ advanced experience.

Practice speaking English in your spare time. Speak more English in class so as to create a favorable English environment.

A teacher should often smile in class. Research on your students and English teaching.

Page 10: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Insist on making people the centerThe present situations:

Most teachers take teaching materials as the dominant factor.

Most teachers only pay close attention to the top students in the class.

The students aren’t divided into helpful groups. Some teachers are beginning to lose their patience

with the students who can’t keep up with the others. Some students need the teachers’ love and emotional

support. The students’ bad behavior is just the result of emotional problems.

Page 11: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions: The English lessons you give must be well received by

your students. Teachers’ effort must be geared to the needs of all the

students. Elect the top students group leaders. Let them work as

the teachers of groups. You’ll have to be patient with the students. You must love your students and pay great attention to

the healthy growth of students Teachers can take turns making up a missed lesson for

the students who fall behind.

Page 12: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Intensify training on language skills

The present situations: Do a great number of multiple-choice exercises

in grammar. Attach great importance to explanation. Spend a lot of time in explaining grammar.

Students haven’t enough time to practice too much.

Students don’t have very much skill in listening or speaking.

Page 13: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions Exercises in school work must be carefully chosen by

teachers. Time is pressing and the task heavy. Let students do more listening, do more speaking, do

more reading, and do more writing. Hold several language skills contests for the students in

school, which must aim to stimulate students’ interest in English.

Page 14: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Pay great attention to the guidance with the students’ methods of learning The present situations:

Teachers seldom teach students strategies of study.

Students don’t know how to learn English and what to learn first.

Most students always complain that they can’t remember new words.

Students don’t understand there aren’t really any good habits of learning English.

Page 15: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions: Students will find out the right way to learn English

under the guidance of the teachers. Get students to derive a lot of pleasure from reading, so

that they may remember the new words easily. Help the students cultivate the habit of analyzing and

solving problems independently. Teachers should offer concrete proposals for learning

English and write programs for students, for example, “Listen to the tape before reading →Read after the tape. →Grasp the meaning of the article. →Retell the article (prompted occasionally by Chinese language). ”

Page 16: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Put comprehensive evaluation into practice

The present situations: Most students think learning English is only

understanding the meaning of the sentences. Some students who get good marks in written

examination can’t speak fluent English or get bad grades in aural test.

The teacher often tests the students’ knowledge of grammar but not English proficiency, so the students are gradually not interested in English.

The test is usually beyond the students’ strength because the examination papers came from other famous schools. Teachers hardly set a paper for their students in the light of the specific conditions.

Page 17: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions:

Praise also acts as an encouragement to the young. Teachers must try students’ best to find out their

merits from various angles. Students should be awarded a prize not only for

excellence in their studies but also for great advances in every field of work.

Open a file on each student and collect their achievement.

Page 18: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Improve interpersonal relationshipsThe present situations

There is little understanding between English teachers, headmasters, students’ parents and students, thus teachers are often in a difficult position.

Just because some teachers make students be afraid of them, it won’t feed back to the teachers information concerning the effectiveness of the teaching methods.

The work of the teaching and research group is at a standstill.

Students seldom cooperate with each other in learning English.

Page 19: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

Suggestions: Teachers should get on well with headmasters,

colleagues, students and students’ parents. Pay a visit to the parents of school children and

together with the parents educates the children to behave well.

Listen carefully to the views of the students. Prepare lessons together with other teachers. Learn

from each other. Put the cooperative learning group together and

then form a learning community.

12 Tips for Teachers of ChildrenHelene Jarmol Uchida

1. Make the rules, which should be fair and consistent, clear from the first day of class.

2. Remember the students' names the first time you meet them. Use their names often when teaching .

3. Show your students what to do. Don't explain. Just do. Just be. They will follow your lead. English needs to be experienced, not explained.

4. Nourish trust between you and the students with each class. Through your actions let them know that you will never embarrass them for making a mistake in English.

5. Use eye contact to communicate your praise and disappointment.

6. Create well-planned, consistent lessons with a predictable format which gives the students a sense of security and balance. Students feel more confident if they know what to expect.

Page 21: 2015-9-9 1 对小学英语教育的思考 1. 小学开设英语的背景 2. 小学英语开设的问题 3. 对小学英语教师和小学生的建议

What makes a good primary school English teacher?

The quality of a good English teacher (Dean 2001) To understand how children think and learn To care for “the whole child” Be competent in English To develop special skills in managing, guiding, and facilitating children

in learning. Be able to organize games and activities To help children to develop in an all round way---linguistically,

intellectually, culturally, and morally The best way of working depends not only what is important in the

curriculum but also upon your strength, your personality, your experience, your beliefs and the situation in which you work.
