MY POEM

Nancy Horton My poem has written me today.

It has plucked my flesh and left me

to lie on the sand like the spine of a fish.

It has drawn my fluid to replenish

the growth that nets the hemispheres.

Today my poem has written me

into the greater alphabet

of its theme. My most fleeting

thoughts have acquired

a new eminence, they are diffused

over the telegraph wires above the earth,

humming an urgent message that adds

to the fullness of all of life.

It has written me into the vowels

at the confluence of rivers

and the swift helix of a blown thistle.

I have nourished my poem

till my bones mark the white sand,

like the clear salt at Septembers crest!

Let a loop of the tides arm

reach down and carry me off.[]
