A new member of the family arrived in our house last month. To find out who he is, turn to page 16.

Workwise, it was busy, busy, busy because as well as the magazines, we had the Ferndown Festival programme to publish. If you haven’t seen it yet, go to www.mags4dorset.co.uk and see the digital version. It’s quite something and Dan Lee, our designer, takes the credit for the zany front cover design.

There was also my mother-in-law’s 101st birthday; celebrated with a family meal at a local pub. Turn to page 10 to see this amazing lady.

Our Kinson feature took off this issue. We discovered there is much more to Kinson than it first appears. Go to pages 17-19 to find out more.

As for competitions, we have several including a £50 prize towards a meal out in our ‘cuisine around the world’ section. Pages 20 and 21 will reveal more.

I gave a talk to Ferndown Chamber of Commerce

members on how increase their chances of getting a press release published. I anticipate some perfect press releases from now onwards.

Charity of the Year

If you’ve read my previous articles, you will know that we have a super centre at West Parley where we are based.

Due to the many changes brought about recently to the welfare system, many members are worried about their financial future. One facility we offer is an in-house Citizens Advice Bureau where those concerned can arrange a private meeting with our resident CAB officer. This works very successfully with many participating members now receiving their full allowances or having their appeals heard and upheld.

Also available to members is our trained counsellor, who has MS. Emotional support may be critical to some disabled people so who better to help with the many emotional challenges these people face daily.

We acknowledge that not all members can, or even want, to use the centre. Newly diagnosed people, many still at work, are busy, so cannot spare time during the day. Others may feel they are not ready to accept the centre environment yet, which is very understandable. For these members we run a group called ‘MateS’ who meet in the evenings at a local social club. Up to 60 members listen to presentations given by

neurological professionals, enjoy quizzes, skittles etc, or just meet up for a social evening. These members are, of course, still able to access all the branch and centre’s amenities should they wish to.

As a branch, we never forget the carers who look after our members. They meet regularly as a group, taking part in various activities such as walks, quizzes, skittles, pub meals etc, which gives them a break from the very responsible role they undertake daily.

Rula Lenska wows audience at the Bournemouth Hearing Show

“Having a hearing loss is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about and when you are able to openly discuss your hearing loss it can be a very

liberating experience,” said Rula Lenska at the recent Bournemouth Hearing Show.

“Rula’s frank and warming story of how she came to terms with her hearing loss impressed the many visitors to the show,” said Heather Cowell of Clarity Hearing Solutions. “Her inspirational talk emphasised the importance of ‘destigmatising’ hearing loss and changing people’s attitudes to encourage acceptance of the condition in the same way that we do with poor eyesight.” Heather added, “We have received many comments from visitors to the hearing show expressing how refreshing it was to hear a glamorous celebrity being happy to admit having hearing difficulties and being pleased to share her experiences with them.”

Music is a vital part of the ethos of any school, and Ferndown Upper School (FUS) continues to provide excellent opportunities for young people to develop their instrumental, vocal and music appreciation skills.

Already this year, the school has hosted a day with members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra attended by many other Dorset schools, which focused on A-level set works. Another day was spent working with gifted and talented children from middle schools, culminating in a short performance by the Upper and Middle school students for parents. To top it all, in May the choir and members of the school orchestra performed with pupils from other Dorset schools in the Royal Albert Hall.

The school has a flourishing orchestra, choir and jazz band and provides a range of instrumental lessons delivered by specialist teachers. Concerts are a regular feature of the school calendar and musical productions have been put on every other year. There are a range of exciting trips on offer and plans to start a regional brass band in conjunction with FUS feeder schools in September.

Music courses in school include both GCSE and A level, alongside grade exams in both theory and performing. There have been some notable successes as students build on this strong foundation to become professional musicians in all areas of the music industry.

The school nurtures musical talent and has a thriving music scene. FUS welcomes applications from musicians at all levels, but particularly those keen to follow the A-level course in the Sixth Form, where some places are still available

for enrolment this September.

£36 million renewable energy park at ParleyDorset company, Eco, has got the go-ahead for a £7 million biogas plant that will convert food waste and locally sourced maize into gas. Eco estimates it will provide 3,000 homes with energy after completion in 2015.

The scheme will form part of a renewable energy park covering 25 acres at Eco’s Chapel Lane site. The company has already received planning permission for a £14 million biomass generating station at Parley that will provide approximately 2.3 megawatts (MW) of electricity per annum.

The third part of the renewable energy park is a solar energy farm, covering an area equivalent to 65 football pitches and generating enough of low carbon ‘green’ electrical power to meet the electricity needs of about 5,000 homes.

Seven arrested and drugs seized in Townsend

Seventeen town criers and their escorts in splendid costumes were joined by the Dorset Youth Marching Band to parade through Wimborne Minster on 6 May. They arrived to compete in the Southern England Town Criers’ Championship. Before the cries began, the Wimborne Militia fired a volley from their muskets to scour the town of evil spirits.

After a closely fought competition, the winners received trophies from the town’s mayor and mayoress.

Pressing for improvements to the A31 at Ringwood, a delegation from Ringwood Town Council including MP Desmond Swayne met with the Minister of Transport, Stephen Hammond MP, at the House of Commons on 13 May.

The delegation presented a petition signed by over 1,000 people and letters of support from adjoining councils and the newly elected Hampshire and Dorset Police Commissioner.

Ringwood Town Council maintains the road is not fit for purpose, with poor signage that provides no assistance to drivers. A reduction of the speed limit has been requested, despite the Highways Agency’s insistence that the road does not satisfy requirements for changes.

One of the delegation, Cllr Rippon-Swaine said, “We had an exceedingly cordial meeting with the minister. He was very understanding of the problems and following a very open discussion, has instructed the Highways Agency officials to prepare, prior to the rising of Parliament on 18 July, reports with proposals for the installation of new directional signing on the bridges over the A31 to get drivers in the right lanes, and also proposals for the introduction of a reduced speed limit on that section of the road from Picket Hill through to the Ashley Heath roundabout. Whilst he emphasised that for each of the proposals the necessary statutory processes need to be followed, he was, subject to that, minded to implement these two proposals as a matter of urgency as it will be some years before any re-engineering of the A31 can be designed and implemented.

“We await those proposals and will do everything to support proposals which will improve the safety of persons using the A31 at Ringwood.”

Minister of Transport agrees urgent action for A31

Dorset Police carried out a day of action in Townsend, Bournemouth on 14 May. Four warrants were executed at home addresses. Seven people were arrested for drugs offences and a quantity of drugs and cash were seized.

Of the seven - three women and four men all from Bournemouth – six were released on police bail and one released with no further action.

Day One, Friday - BayreuthImmediately, I am lost. With no German language skills whatsoever (serves me right for not taking a language GCSE), it feels rather like The Great Escape. Luckily, a lot of residents speak English, and with their help, I manage to navigate my way to the town centre.

In true European style, there are restaurants and cafés all around, with amazing water features that run down the centre of the street. I consider getting a coffee, and soaking up this remarkable ambience. Then I realise I only have a few euros in my wallet. I can’t be bothered to run back to the flat, so I end up popping into that most quintessential of German institutions to get some cheap food – Aldi.

It’s time for a proper exploration of the town, where I come upon across the ghost of an institution of our own – a shop selling all manner of goods called WOOLWORTH. Sadly there is no sign of pic n’ mix. I check out the sights, including the Margravial Opera House and the Festival Hall, which dedicates itself to performances of Wagner.

In the evening, I go to a restaurant and order pork schnitzel, which is delicious. For dessert, I order a ‘sweet calzone’, assuming that it will be, well, dessert sized. I am slightly shocked when they bring out a whole pizza base, folded in half and filled with Nutella and mascarpone. Thank goodness I’m running a half-marathon on Sunday.

Day Two, Saturday - Bamberg and the Music FestivalIn the day, I take a trip to Bamberg, near the river Main, to try a glass of its famous ‘Rauchbier’, or smoked beer. I get some wonderful photographs of the buildings and river.

In the evening, it is time for the ‘Weissbierfest’ – or Wheat Beer Festival, at the Maisel’s brewery in Bayreuth. ELO and Mike and the Mechanics are playing

as the main event, and I manage to meet both bands backstage for a quick chat. They are friendly guys and give amazing performances. The Germans have quite the appreciation for British music, it seems - UK singles are all over their radio.

Day Three - The half-marathon, BayreuthToday is the Maisel’s Fun Run, and I am signed up for the half marathon - two laps round Bayreuth, totalling 13 miles. The weather is hot, adding to the strain, but the streets are lined with people handing out cups of water, a godsend. I finish in 1hr42, which I’m pleased with, since I hadn’t trained.

I spend the rest of the day unable to move. Day Four - NurembergFor just 16 euros, I travel to Nuremberg, about an hour and a half each way. There is a host of cathedrals and amazing pieces of art and sculpture, along with some breathtaking scenery. Unfortunately, my feet are still feeling the strain of the run (barefoot trainers were a big mistake in hindsight), so I spend a lot of my time hobbling around the city like Rizzo from Midnight Cowboy. I get some great pictures, including the famous ‘Hauptmarkt’, the Nuremberg Castle and the ‘Schoner Brunen.’ I also try a traditional Bratwurst.

Travelling back to Bayreuth, in the evening, I visit a restaurant specialising in traditional German food. I have pork with a side helping of Sauerkraut, which is so filling that I am incapable of ordering dessert. They do seem to love big portions! In the morning, it’s the trip to Nuremberg airport, and the flight back to London City Airport. Auf Wiedersehen!

Plastic bits and pieces made up almost 65% of all the litter found on British beaches during a single weekend last September, according to the annual Beachwatch Big Weekend Report published by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

The amount of plastic in 2012 rose by

3% compared to the year before. There was a 100% rise in the number of cigarette stubs found on beaches between 2011 and 2012 with general smoking litter, including lighters and packets, increasing by 90%.

MCS says the amount of rubbish like sweet wrappers and plastic bottles seems to indicate that decades of various anti-litter campaigns now need to be re-invigorated for a new generation.

MCS says enough is enough, and environmental charities, regulators and devolved administrations

must set aside their differences and join forces in the fight against littering.

The charity says that about 80% of the litter found on the UK’s beaches comes from terrestrial sources, so we must go inland to focus efforts on reducing beach and marine rubbish.

In Dorset, during the annual Beachwatch Big Weekend, 10 beaches covering a length of 1.79km produced 167 bags of litter weighing 998kg.

Nepalese Ambassador honoured in BournemouthHundreds of people met Nepal’s ambassador to the UK on a very special date for his country.

His Excellency Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise forewent the celebrations in London for the Nepalese New Year 2070 celebrations and came instead to Bournemouth, where he met people from the burgeoning UK-Nepal Friendship Society, based in the borough.

Dr Chalise, accompanied by his wife Dr Milan Adhikary, greeted scores of guests throughout a day of activities sponsored by Bournemouth 2026 Trust.

Alma Pulford celebrated her 101st birthday with a family meal at a local restaurant on 19 May.

Born in Yorkshire in 1912, she married Eric and the couple moved to Surrey. They had four children and her husband became the single most important figure in the history of the British film poster, responsible for some 1,000 designs during his working life. On Eric’s retirement, they moved to Dorset.

Widowed in 2005,

Alma remains independent, still drives a car and does her own shopping. She is truly remarkable for her age. Her secret? She has always been incredibly busy and over the years has volunteered her time to help others as well as being a fantastic and much loved

mother, mother-in-law, and nanan to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She still visits a disabled relative almost every week to play cards with her. A glass of sherry a day is her favourite tipple and she loves painting, including Chinese brush painting.

Scrumptious festival serves up a treatLesley Waters, patron of the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival, opened the weekend-long festival market from the balcony of the mayor’s parlour as thousands of people poured into the town to enjoy a plethora of food stalls.

A packed programme of cookery demonstrations by local chefs also took place and both Lesley Waters and TV chef James Martin took to the stage.

Vicki Hallam, Chairman of the Food Festival organising committee, said: “There was a great atmosphere all weekend and even the few showers of rain we had didn’t seem to deter people from visiting all of the stalls and trying out everything that was on offer.”

Police keep flying Dorset Police will continue to provide a policing service from the air – after signing up to the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

The collaborative agreement involving all 43 police forces in England and Wales will go live on 3 July 2013 and will see the cost of air support to Dorset residents reduce by more than £500,000 a year – while improving coverage, availability and response times.

The national service will also take responsibility for any future replacement helicopters, the cost of which would exceed £4 million and would otherwise have to be met by local taxpayers.

Flying time will increase from 19 hours a day to 24-hour coverage says Acting Assistant Chief Constable for Dorset Police, Martin Hiles.

‘A CHANCE TO DANCE’ the South’s most spectacular dance event returns to Bournemouth’s Pavilion theatre on 23 June with 350 students from 10 dance and theatre schools attending.

The event is now in its 10th year and offers students the opportunity to perform on the beautiful Pavilion stage.

The dance students attend workshops during the day at Pavilion Dance with Alan Burkitt who is currently playing Jerry Travers in ‘Top Hat’ in the West End; Russell Sargeant of the Jiving Lindy Hoppers; and Steve Pritchett who is currently working on the UK tour of ‘Dirty Dancing’.

In the evening the students represent their own schools in a spectacular gala performance.

Patron, Bonnie Langford is keen to promote the event which is devoid of competition and encourages the students to work together.

With so many exciting spring/summer ‘13 trends to inspire us, it has been a challenge whittling them down to just a couple for my first fashion column.

This season brings us designs from oriental-inspired clothing, clear plastics, cut-away clothing and floral appliqués. For this issue I’ve delved into trends that convey a sense of modernization and effortless style. They have filtered from the catwalks to our high streets.

The new metallicsThrilling and ever-present, beaming on all the major catwalks including Alexander Wang, Louise Gray and Mulberry, the metallic trend was envisioned as a real keeper of spring/summer’s fashions.

Foils, precious-metal prints, iridescent fabrics and holographic finishes bring glitter, gleam and gloss mixed with exciting shimmers and futuristic twists.

From flirty, feminine frocks and shimmering pencil skirts, to iridescent pastel coats and delicate brocade jackets, every fashion option has had a metallic makeover. High streets are displaying metallic pieces from dresses and skirts, to high knee socks and show stopping heels. Whether you opt to dress this trend up or down, metallics are now here to stay within your wardrobe.

Embellished clothingThe spring/summer ‘13 creative craze is one to sprinkle a little luxurious finishing on garments that are in need of awakening.

Congratulations to instructor of the month!

Local girl Imogen Hames from Ferndown Ju-Jitsu Club was awarded ‘Instructor of the Month’ at the Heatherlands

Centre on 12 May. Imogen is the first Ferndown student to receive the new award and had to take a qualification to become a junior club assistant instructor. The course requirements for the qualification stipulate that the student has to be over 12, hold an orange belt and a first aid certificate. Imogen holds a purple belt and will be grading for her light blue on 26 May (as 4Dorset goes to print). She helps out in the Mini Jitsu lessons and gives teaching assessments within the main group.

Officially opened by Cllr Lucy Clark, chairman of East Dorset District Council and Cllr Simon Gibson, Verwood’s mayor on 12 May, the skate park extension at Potterne Park turned out to be a memorable public engagement for both dignitaries in their outgoing roles.

‘Cut’ in spectacular style, (see photo), the ribbon ceremony celebrated a new era of skating in Verwood.

A Skatejam drew over 100 skateboarders and BMX bikers from miles around to compete for prizes and the Vans Team gave freestyle displays.

Designed by Marc Churchill of 1skateparks, the extension has been added to the existing bowl. It now

features an integral youth shelter, LED feature lighting and a speaker system so users can play their own music. The park is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Grants amounting to £65,000 from the Heathland Mitigation Fund, East Dorset District PACT (Partners and Communities Together) and Synergy Housing Association made the project possible.

Cllr Lucy Clark said, “Our thanks go to East Dorset District Council’s Countryside Management Service for project managing yet another superb venture in East Dorset which I have no doubt will be a very great success.”

Over 700 supporters poured into Cuthbury last month to see Wimborne Town take on a talented Arsenal under 21s’ side in a benefit game for former Wimborne Town stars Andy Culliford and Kev James.

Wimborne played some of the most fluent football seen in a long time while the Gunners demonstrated all the skills expected from players ready to break into the Premier League and European football big time.

A fairly even game saw Arsenal run out 2-0 winners with second half substitute Chuba Akpom finding the back of the net in the 70th and 89th minutes.

The Viv Chadwick memorial garden at Allenbourn Middle School in Wimborne was formally opened on 8 May. Mrs Chadwick, a long-serving and much-loved teacher, died last spring, and a beautiful garden has since been created in her memory.

Staff and students undertook a huge fund-raising effort last summer, partly in aid of the garden funds, but also to help the Sparkle Appeal at Victoria Education Centre in Poole.

Speaking at the ceremony, head teacher Derek Brooks paid tribute to Mrs Chadwick, saying

how much she is missed, but that her memory will live on in ‘Viv’s Garden’. A group of Year 8 pupils read out their own very moving tributes and poems.

A cheque for £3,871.39 was presented to Diana Newbury and Simon Brown from Victoria Education Centre by Derek Brooks and Paul Chadwick.

Since last August, when we lost our dog Max, the Waggy Tails’ features in 4Dorset took on a new meaning and we eyed up the dogs longingly, yet we knew in our hearts that Max was irreplaceable.

Then something inside me began to waver. My eyes were being drawn towards one of the Waggy Tails’ photos, more so than any of the others. Frosty and Noel tugged at the heartstrings and mags4dorset sponsored them in April.

I felt compelled to make enquiries and soon after, I visited Sue in Christchurch who has re-homed around 400 rabbits for Waggy Tails over the last 10 years. She had a number of rabbits in runs and when I went for a

closer look, Frosty was the one who ran up and twitched his nose through the wire. There was no doubt in my mind, he was the one for me. His pal Noel had already been re-homed.

Waggy Tails supplied a hutch and a run - and of course Frosty. I made a donation and off I went with my little white rabbit.

His run, I decided wasn’t big enough, so I purchased one twice the size. I still didn’t feel it did my bunny justice, so he now comes into the house. When he does a twisty jump, it’s called a binky and apparently indicates he’s happy. He does this all the time indoors.

I genned up on rabbit care and feed Frosty plain pellets, so he doesn’t become a picky eater. I make sure he has a

constant supply of fresh hay and supplement it with plenty of fresh food. He loves dandelions, carrot tops, shepherds purse, groundsel and grass. I ensure he has a good supply of fresh water so he doesn’t become ill and I don’t feed him too many carrots because they can make him fat. I also know not to give him iceberg lettuce, ever. And I have discovered that by putting in a litter tray, he uses this as his toilet, which makes his hutch easy to clean.

Frosty is adorable. We are so grateful to Waggy Tails for letting him come to live with us.

Contracts were exchanged in October 2012. The agreement has meant that the Verwood

Leisure Centre, which was built in the early 1980s and was in need of major refurbishment, is to be demolished allowing Morrisons to comprehensively redevelop the existing store.

The capital receipts from the sale of the Leisure Centre site are contributing towards the Council being able to make major investments in new facilities in Verwood.

The investment project is now being realised with three major developments. The first part of the project has seen a new all-weather sports pitch at Potterne Park which was opened in January 2013.

The astro-turf pitch provides a football and rugby training facility with floodlighting and drainage to enable it to be used all year round. East Dorset District Council acted in a consultancy role for the design and tendering through to the completion of the project.

The council has also managed the second part of the project which is now being completed to provide a state-of-the-art 50-station gym extension at Verwood Hub. Construction started in late 2012 and the gym is on schedule to open on 8 June 2013. Known as Lifestyle Active, the new gym will include the latest fitness equipment – much more than was available at the Leisure Centre - and will also enable users to surf the web or keep up with social media whilst exercising.

The final part of the project will see a new sports centre at Emmanuel School which will be open from the first week of September and will include four courts, one more than was available at the Leisure Centre. As well as providing a facility for the school, it will be open to the public every Monday and Tuesday morning, evenings Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. It will also be open to the public during school holidays.

New sports and leisure facilities for Verwood– how it all came aboutIn late 2011 East Dorset District Council approved the sale of Verwood Leisure Centre to Wm Morrison Supermarket plc with a view to Morrisons providing a replacement foodstore while the Council would improve sport and leisure facilities in the town.

All three facilities are being managed by Verwood Arts & Leisure Amenities (VALA) which was formed from a merger of Verwood Community Association and Verwood Hub Community Association in 2012.

Cllr Spencer Flower, Leader of East Dorset District Council, said: “The sale of Verwood Leisure Centre has given the Council the opportunity to work with its partners to radically improve community facilities and services in Verwood for the benefit of the district’s residents. The new facilities will give residents access to the best in sports, leisure and retail provision and will encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Alistair Smith, Property Asset Manager for Morrisons, said:“Acquiring the Council’s land means that in agreement with our landlords we will be able to build a new and improved food store, giving shoppers in Verwood a much better choice. The new store will be bigger than the existing one and also include a petrol filling station. Its focus will be on fresh food and the traditional skills of our butchers, bakers and fishmongers that make Morrisons different. Once complete, we believe this development will bring a real boost to Verwood and attract more people to shop in the area.”

Kinson has a fascinating history. In 1086, its entry in the Domesday book detailed

a population of 43 households (18 villagers, 7 slaves, 4 cottagers, 14 other) and 9 plough lands, at a £70 value to the lord, Edward of Salisbury. It had become a major centre for trade in Georgian times – and also a major smuggling hub, led by the infamous Sir Isaac Gulliver, who ran a vast smuggling operation on the South Coast. It was

absorbed by Bournemouth in 1931, after residents protested that they did not want to be part of Poole.

Before the First World War, while travelling in his carriage from Canford House to Highcliffe Castle, Wilhelm II, later the Kaiser, had to be rescued by locals after being bogged in Milham’s Splash, an offshoot of the Stour. Today, Kinson has a lot to offer, with an interesting selection of shops, services and activities - so do check it out.

Sylvester the Cat - the Looney Tunes legend - wants a supermini to help him catch

Tweety Bird. I bet the hungry feline would sell

six of his nine lives to raise money for a Dacia Sandero Access 1.2-litre. Why? Because it costs £5,995 which makes it the cheep-est new car in the UK and one of the best value.

Sylvester could have five doors and a 320-litre boot. These may sound like unremarkable features, but there are numerous more expensive superminis that have three doors and far less cargo capacity.

Power comes from a 75bhp petrol engine that could propel the black and white cat to 62mph in 14.5 seconds. Not fast, but fast enough to scare Tweety. This entry-level trim also averages 48.7mpg, which is reasonable considering the price. The car’s pleasing fuel efficiency complements its light steering,

smooth manual transmission and excellent visibility that make driving effortless.

The Dacia is new to the UK market, even though it started life in 1966 in Romania. However, the company is now owned by Renault who perceive it as their budget brand.

The Sandero Access 1.2-litre therefore has a limited equipment specification compared to most new vehicles.

Highlights include power steering and the electronic stability programme. It also has an engine immobiliser but lacks electric windows, remote central locking, and air-conditioning none of which are fancy features these days.

There is, however, a plus point. The Sandero Access is so basic that there is little to go wrong - and that could save Sylvester a small fortune throughout its life - making chasing Tweety Bird very economical indeed.
