Lots of people who come to Folkestone want a course that gives them a general and usefulknowledge of English. So, if you are aged 16 or older, you can study with us and improveyour English for a period of between two and 12 weeks – at any time of year.

You know that a General English Course is for you if:

• you are at any level in English – from beginner to proficiency

• you want to study at any time of the year – summer, winter, spring or autumn

• you want either 15 or 20 hours a week of enjoyable study in an internationalenvironment

• you want to build your confidence and ability in speaking, listening, reading,writing, grammar and vocabulary

Business English

As a business person or someone new to business inEnglish, there are many things you need to do. If youneed to:

• make phone calls

• write letters and emails

• negotiate

• give presentations about your company

• research products and innovations

• entertain your clients – all in English,

then a Business English course is for you.

You need to be aged 18 or older, of intermediate levelor better, and want to study for a period of betweentwo and 12 week.

A Business English course gives you:

• 20 hours a week group tuition

• a weekly business project or assignment

• a partly negotiated course design

• excellent value for money.

Executive English

Are you a company director or a senior manager inyour organisation? Is time an important factor for you?Is having high levels of personal attention somethingyou need?

If it is and you are aged 24 or older, are already anintermediate level and want to study for a period ofone to four weeks, you can benefit from ourprofessional Executive English course.

If you want:

• a course designed to fit your work, your businessand your language needs

• to have a practical course with a minimum of two(maximum 6) students in your class

• to study for 20 hours a week

• lunch with your teachers from Monday to Friday

Exam Courses

A great way for you to advance your career and have an impressive CV is to take a recognised exam.

When you join an examination course you need to be aged 16 or older and stay for a minimumof two weeks. We give you a clear assessment of your English level when you arrive and helpyou choose the examination that is right for you (this depends on the time you study with usand your personal objectives). Every Friday you have exam practice.

Work Experience

If you are old enough and have the time, a work experience course may be just the thing foryou! Work experience gives you an exciting opportunity to put your English skills to the test andto make new friends in a place of work in the Folkestone area.

Requirements for the work experience course are that you:

• are aged 21 or older

• want to study for a period of eight to twelve weeks

• study for a minimum of four weeks on either our General English or Business English course(20 hours a week)

• have time to do a minimum of four weeks on a work experience placement

• pass our Intermediate level test before you go on work experience

• provide us with a copy of your CV in English when you register for your course.

What the course gives you is:

• 20 hours per week of lessons before your work experience placement

• testing to ensure your English is at least the minimum level requiredto work effectively in a company

• a maximum English class size of 12

• a report from your company and school on your work placement, skills and ability

• a certificate of attendance.

Please note that we cannot guarantee you work in your preferred area or industry.

Junior Vacation Course

Folkestone is one of the sunniest seaside towns inEngland, offering long warm days ideal for outdooractivities and events. During July and August we welcome groups (minimum group size 10) of students aged between 13 and 17 to our fun-packed vacation courses for periods of two to four weeks.

What makes the Junior Vacation Course special for youis a single, all-inclusive price per person which includes:

• 15 hours a week of interactive and motivatinglessons

• maximum class size of 15

• good, friendly host family accommodation

• breakfast and dinner with your host family and apacked lunch Monday to Friday, and three meals aday at weekends

Accommodation

Homestay

When you stay in Folkestone your accommodation is asimportant as your course. When you are happy in your‘home’, you are happy with your friends and yourstudies.

Our promise is that you stay with a good host familywho are helpful and friendly. You have breakfast anddinner with your family from Monday to Friday and allmeals at the weekend.

Your family will talk to you and involve you in their lives.This means you have lots of opportunity to practiseyour English.

As most families live nearby, the school is usually only a10 to 20 minute walk away.

All families are different – some have children, somehave pets, some are older, some are single parents.Whatever the family they look after you and make yourstay a pleasure.

If you are on an executive course you have a privatebathroom.

Private Homes

Private homes are offered to adults (students aged 18 orolder) only, and can accommodate up to six students. Inthis type of accommodation you are more independentand the host may not eat with you at mealtimes.

Please note that hotels and guest houses are available on request.

Your health and welfare areimportant to us. If you needhelp to see a doctor or dentist,we will book an appointment foryou. If you need to discuss anyissues, we are always ready to listento you.We are always happy to giveyou advice if you need it. You canbe confident about our care andsupport for you at all times.

Your Social Programme

An important part of your stay is your time outside ofclass. This is time to practise your English in a funenvironment with your friends.

To help you make your time interesting and useful weorganise activities for you as follows:

• two evenings a week of free in-school activities.These are designed to create fun and excitementwith your friends. It is not only the activity thatcreates the fun but also how it is set up and wholeads it. Our team of teachers and staff make sureyou laugh all evening with competitions, quizzesand games and that every event is memorable

• one ‘pay as you go’ evening event. This could be apop concert at the local theatre, a bowling trip to alocal town, an evening ice skating or even a karaokenight at a pub

• one ‘pay as you go’ full-day excursion. This could beto one of the many interesting destinations, such asLondon, Oxford, or Windsor.

Please note that some activities depend on there beingenough students who want to take part.

Culture – historical churches, castles, houses,stately homes and pretty villages nearby, andthe famous Victorian ‘west end’ of Folkestone.

Eating out – a variety of restaurants: English,French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Greekand fast-food outlets.

Night life – three night clubs, a theatrewith national and international shows,and many traditional and continental-style pubs and bars.

Nature – walks along the coast, guided tours,cycle paths, nature reserves and the famousKent countryside.

Shopping – the main shopping area is a one-minute walk from our school.

• The first ever television transmission in the worldwas achieved in Folkestone. The transmission wassent from a small building in Guildhall Street to ashop in Sandgate Road by John Logie Baird – theman who invented television. He lived and workedin Folkestone for many years.

• The very first public phone box waslocated on The Leas.

• The Royal Family likes Folkestone –King Edward VII was a frequent visitorto the Grand Hotel on The Leas.

• Agatha Christie wrote her best-knownnovel, Murder on the Orient Express, in theGrand Hotel.

• William Harvey, who discovered the circulationof the blood, was born in Folkestone.

• HG Wells, the famous author of The War of theWorlds, lived in Folkestone.

• Samuel Plimsoll, inventor of the life-saving Plimsollline on the hulls of ships, lived in Folkestone.

• England’s most famous novelist, Charles Dickens,used to drink at the local pub The British Lion,where a room is dedicated to his memory.

• Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, lived justalong the coast from Folkestone.

• The Channel Tunnel, Europe's largest everconstruction project, means that Folkestone isonly 35 minutes from France.

• New railways being built now mean that by2009, London will be only 45 minutes away.
