1. Levels of Japanese Classes

Kumamoto University offers various kinds of classes covering the Japanese language for international

students and researchers.

Japanese language ability and classes are categorized into the following 7 levels.

Level Contents

1 Lower Elementary For those who have never studied Japanese

2 Upper Elementary JLPT(Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N5

3 Lower Intermediate JLPT(Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N4

4 Upper Intermediate JLPT(Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N3-N2

5 Lower Advanced JLPT(Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N1

6 Upper Advanced JLPT(Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N1

7 Those who have passed the JLPT N1 with a high score do not need to take Japanese classes.

The table on the pages 11-14 shows the classes in each level. Please choose the appropriate classes

according to the result of your placement test (your Japanese proficiency).

examination for each class, and credits from these classes are required for graduation.

Students in the Short-Term Exchange Program [SU-S] and in the Japanese Language and

Studies Program[SU-J] can obtain credit upon passing the final examination for each class,

and credits from these classes are required for the completion of each program.

Other students [G][SG][N][R] and researchers [O] cannot obtain credit.

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U] can obtain credit from Japanese I IV upon

passing the final examination for each class, and credits from these classes are treated as

elective subjects that are required for graduation.

Students in the Short-Term Exchange Program [SU-S] and in the Japanese Language and

Studies Program[SU-J] can obtain credit upon passing the final examination for each class,

and credits from these classes are required for the completion of each program.

Other students [G][SG][N][R] and researchers [O] cannot obtain credit.

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U] can obtain credit from Japanese Studies upon

passing the final examination for each class, and credits from these classes are treated as

elective subjects that are required for graduation.

Students in the Short-Term Exchange Program [SU-S] and in the Japanese Language and

Studies Program [SU-J] can obtain credit upon passing the final examination for each class,

and credits from these classes are required for the completion of each program.

Other students [G][SG][N][R] and researchers [O] cannot obtain credit.

3 The Short-Term Exchange Program in English J-STEP

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U] can not attend the classes.

Students in the Short-Term Exchange Program [SU-S] can obtain credit upon passing the

final examination for each class, and credits from these classes are required for the

completion.

Students in the Japanese Language and Studies Program [SU-J], other students [G][SG][N]

[R] and researchers [O] cannot obtain credit.

Students who wish to take Japanese language classes are required to attend the orientation and take the

Japanese Language Placement Test. Tests are given as shown below.

If you have taken the placement test in April of 2017, you don't need to take it again in the fall

semester, but you are required to submit an “Application for Japanese Classes” to the International

Student Office. You are required to take a higher level class from the last semester. You may not take

the same level class as last semester.

Time and Date: 9:00 - 11:30 September 25th (Monday)

Place: Classroom C-301 (Zengaku-Kyoiku-to Blg.)

Please submit an “Application for Japanese Classes” to the International Student Office by the

day.

The results of the placement test will be posted on the bulletin board at the Classroom 2A.

We offer Survival Japanese Classes for students and researchers in Honjo Campus. You can learn

useful words and expressions in Japanese for daily life in Kumamoto. If you would like to take the

classes, please attend the orientation below:

Time and Date: 10:30 - 12:00 October 12th Thursday

Advising on Japanese classes will be given for those who do not know which Japanese classes to take.

Our advising session will be held as below.

Date and Time: 10:20 - 12:20 September 26th (Thursday)

Place: Classroom 2D (Zengaku-kyoiku-to building)

The registration process will vary depending on each student's status.(see p.6)

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U]

Register for classes by using Kumamoto University's academic affairs information system, SOSEKI.

Auditors in Undergraduate School [SU-S][SU-J]

Submit the registration form for the Kumamoto University Short-Term Exchange Program to the

International Student Office.

Other students and researchers [G][SG][N][R][O]

Submit the “Registration Form for Japanese Classes” (pink paper) to the International Student Office.

Deadline

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U]: October 10 (Tuesday)

Auditors in Undergraduate School [SU-S][SU-J]: October 4 (Wednesday)
