PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Prior to 1930, area known for numerous winter colonies
Winter colonies existed throughout Florida since the late 1800s. Later, the people were called “the snowbirds.” The discovery of warm springs in northern Florida and the balmy climate during cold winter months made Florida attractive. The 1880s saw significant railroad construction, which opened up tourism. Prior to 1930, the winter colonies consisted of smaller colonies from different states, cities, foreign countries, and religious affiliations. Groups of people from the same town or county would travel together and buy property within a few blocks of each other. The Maine colony was just north of the Main Library between 16th and 17th avenues. Most all of the families were from the same town of Denmark (Maine). The Cleveland (Ohio) colony is present day Riomar. The Kansas City colony was located near Round Island Park on South A1A. The Michigan colony was between 15th and 16th avenues near the library. One of the oldest colonies was Ohio, which settled in
Wabasso about 1904. In 1921, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri colonies had a series of entertainment specials for the community. They sang songs, shared pioneer stories, and, of course, reminisced about life back home. The Davenport (Iowa) colony was started by Herman Zeuch, who is considered the founding father of Vero Beach and Indian River Farms. The Kentucky colony was west of Vero. Then there was the
Pennsylvania colony near Winter Beach on U.S. 1. Almost all families were from the same town of Selinsgrove, Snyder County. The Belgium colony in Roseland and the German colonies in Fellsmere and Wabasso are just a few examples of foreign countries. Religious colonies appeared all over Florida. In our area, there was the Catholic colony in south Brevard County and the Dunkards in Wabasso. We are all connected.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the final tribute to be paid to Prince:
• Lois Cappelen was sincere in asking the question. “Have you ever heard of anyone named Vanilla Ice?” My internal reaction: “Duh!” However, out of respect for Lois, I just nodded my head in the affirmative. “He’s sitting right over there,” she said, pointing to the dining area at C.J. Cannon’s. Lois had never heard of him, but servers Julie Arata and Ruth Goodger were all giddy. They already had pictures taken with him. Vanilla Ice, 48, is a one-hit wonder, but what a hit it was – any music fan under the age of 60 has heard of “Ice Ice Baby” (which hit No. 1 in 1990). Now, he is Kardashian-esque in his appeal. Why was he in C.J. Cannon’s last Wednesday? He’s in
the area to work on Season 7 of “The Vanilla Ice Project” on the DIY Network. He is remodeling a house in Brevard County. Another server, Heather Hammer, bought a poster of him just two days before for her son. She was determined to get an autograph. “I’m going to be the coolest mom ever!” she said. Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, turned on the charm while at the restaurant. “Thank you for your hospitality,” he said after signing an autograph for what’s called “The Wall” at Cannon’s. He even sat down at the piano in the lobby and played the Bill Withers classic “Lean on Me.” (That was really cool. I’ll be keeping that video on my iPhone for a long time!) Lois Cappelen said it best: “I met someone who I didn’t

know, and I didn’t really think I was going to like, and now I think he’s great – he’s a nice young man.”• Vero Beach Book Store owner Chad Leonard kept telling me the April 19 appearance by Buzz Aldrin was going to be huge, but I’m thinking the overflow crowd of nearly 500 people probably exceeded his expectations.• Back in 2014, while still at the Press Journal, I wrote a column about Christian Futch having perfect attendance from kindergarten through his senior year at Vero Beach High School. I mentioned Christian wanted to become a firefighter. Last week, completely out of the blue, I received a graduation-type announcement. On the left-hand side was my column from 2014. On the right-hand side was a photo of Christian with his parents, Cameron and Terry Ann Futch – Christian was holding a certificate of completion from the Fire Academy at Indian River State College. The handwritten note, presumably from Terry Ann, said: “He made it! (Also with perfect attendance.)”
That was the coolest surprise I’ve received in a long, long time. Congratulations, Christian.• It’s still early, but local candidates are going to have a hard time coming up with a catchier slogan than the one Buck Vocelle is using in his first-ever run for political office (Mosquito Control District): “Mosquitoes suck!! Vote for Buck.”• Update: After spending the past several months in Poland, unable to return to the United States, Eva Liwanowska is back at Eva’s Polish Kitchen on 43rd Avenue.• On the same day Vanilla Ice was at C.J. Cannon’s, I happened to cross paths with Ann Grou. She was there picking up various publications while her husband waited outside with the car running. When I asked her why she had two copies of Lemmon Lines, she said: “My neighbor loves it, too. She says, ‘Get me that yellow paper.’ ” Hmmm. Sounds like a pretty good marketing slogan!

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
I’ve always thought of Andy Beindorf as the quintessential small-town guy. He grew up in Vero Beach during simpler times. And that type of upbringing never left him. You get the sense he always sees the glass as being half-full instead of half-empty. “I’m a ‘Leave It to Beaver’-kind of guy,” he said during our conversation at C.J. Cannon’s. You know, Andy could pass for a grown-up Theodore Cleaver. Lots of facial similarities. Andy is 60, but he looks much younger. He credits genes and exercise. (His great-grandfather lived to be 94, and his grandfather to 96. His father, who lives in Vero Beach, is 92.)
“I’m not so young on the inside,” he said. “I take things personally, and I worry about others. On the inside, I might be 75.” Andy, who has been involved in local banking for more than 30 years, is now with the National Bank of Commerce. He is the market president of Indian River County. The best career decision he ever made was getting in on the ground floor of Indian River National Bank
in 1984. “It was pitched as the ultimate opportunity,” he said, “and it ended up being the case.” IRNB had $2 million in initial equity capital, and it grew to $80 million. What surprised me about Andy is his knowledge of sports trivia – including golf, baseball and University of Florida football. For example, there was a time he could name the winner of every major golf tournament for the previous 30 years.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
The five-member Board of County Commissioners had 44 meetings (regular and special-call meetings) during 2014-15 fiscal year. It met for a total of 140 hours.
Compare that to two years earlier, when the board had fewer meetings (40) but met for more total hours (147).
Fun factsTop 500 countdown
All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.

259. “We’ve Got Tonight”(1978) Bob SegerMemory: This song could be a hit in any decade.
258. “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)”(1973) George HarrisonMemory: Liked him better as solo act than with Beatles.
