Celebrating 45 Years 2015

PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: The history of Pocahontas Park (Part 2)

This is a continuation of the 102-year history of Pocahontas Park on 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach. In 1929, the park had the following: black bear, alligators, bobcats, raccoons, fox, large owl, comfort house, tennis court, basketball court, shuffle board court installed by the “State of Maine Club,” grandstand, and several benches. In 1931, a fountain was dedicated to Charles H. Pettibone, founder of the local Rotary Club and the Community Church. This was the first artesian well. In 2005, the Rotary Club installed the Centennial Fountain. In 1938, a WWI cannon was brought to the park and today it is in front of the American Legion Hall. It was finally resolved in 1953 that the park – all of it – belonged to the city of Vero Beach. This controversy began in 1920 and through the years, local land and business owners fought over the land.

It was August 1959 when the F2H2-P Banshee Navy jet fighter plane arrived at Pocahontas Park. In 1949, this plane set the world altitude record and it cost approximately $500,000. It had a speed of 600 mph and was a photo reconnaissance plane. Twenty-nine years later, filled with cement, buried in sand and after several generations of children climbing on it, the plane was restored. It took almost two years and is now displayed at the

National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. The arrival, and origin, of the beautifully restored horse has not been determined due to conflicting memories. Sadly, the sculpture/artist is unknown as well as who donated it. The fifth-grade class at Rosewood Magnet School named “Patriot” in 2003. Perhaps someone can help and I will write about the process of locating the history of our “Patriot.” Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for fall-like temperatures to arrive:

• If you are a proponent of standardized testing in public schools, Julie Sharkey-Villars has a story that should at least give you pause. Six years ago, she found her 9-year-old son in his bedroom with a belt around his neck. He tried to kill himself after failing the FCAT a second time. “He was crushed (because he would be required to repeat third grade). He said he didn’t want to face anyone,” she said. “At 9 years old, you shouldn’t come to that kind of conclusion.” Thankfully, her son survived and is now in eighth grade. FCAT has since been replaced by the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). “No one understands the scope of what these tests are doing to students and teachers,” she said. “I never thought my 9-year-old would want to take his own life over a test.”

Julie said she decided to share her family’s story because she believes other families could wind up in the same situation if a child has to repeat a grade or isn’t allowed to graduate from high school. “We were the normal nuclear family, and it happened to us,” she said. “If it happened to our family, it could happened to yours.” Julie and her husband, Rick, who retired last year from Indian River County Fire Rescue, have five children ranging in age from 8 to 21. “We kept quiet for a long time,” she said. “But no one benefits by keeping quiet.” Julie is seeking to find other parents interested in joining the movement to end high-stakes testing in Florida. “We need parents,” she said. “We need numbers.”

Her contact info: 772-766-6294, or [email protected].• Thanks to Paul Ettari for letting me know about this tidbit: Vero Beach is No. 5 on Social Daily Post’s list of the “10 Best Cities to Retire in Florida.” Melbourne tops the list.• A question from last week: What’s the longest stretch of road in Indian River County without a stoplight or caution light? I said it might be 58th Avenue between Oslo Road and 4th Street. County Commissioner Wesley Davis (Oslo Road west of 74th Street), Jeanne Gascoigne (Roseland Road), Linda Esposito (66th Avenue north of Oslo Road) and Dick Gurley (also 66th Avenue north of Oslo, plus 82nd Avenue between Oslo and State Road 60) were among those who suggested other stretches. Yep, they all have me beat.• If you saw the list on page 3 and wondered about Right to Rise USA, this is from the organization’s website: “Right to Rise USA is the leading independent super PAC

supporting Jeb Bush’s campaign for President.”• Another indication the Christmas season now starts on Nov. 1: I stopped by Bob Craig’s house to drop off some copies of last week’s issue, and when he opened the door, a 12-foot Christmas tree was there waiting to be decorated. Joyce Craig said it takes her about three weeks to decorate the tree. She has a theme every year – last year was “Germany,” and this year it’s “Winter’s Eve, Snowy Wonderland.”• In this space last week I mentioned a voicemail message from Pastor James Womack. He asked to meet for breakfast. Because the Christmas season is approaching, and the call came out of the blue, I likened it to a “naughty or nice?”-type situation. We met on Election Day at C.J. Cannon’s and had a nice conversation. He had a simple message for the somewhat perplexed publisher of Lemmon Lines. “I appreciate what you do, and keep it up,” he said. “Keep on doing what you’re doing.” Whew!

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Gordon Owren, who will turn 97 later this month, doesn’t see living to be 100 as a big deal. He has his sights set higher. “I firmly believe I’m going to be 105,” he said. “It’s not a goal. It’s just something that’s going to happen.” He believes in the power of positive thinking. (I forgot to ask him if he has read Norman Vincent Peale’s book on that topic.) Gordon moved here in 1997 shortly after calling it a career as a bookkeeper. He had worked the previous 28 years for an industrial chemical company in Clifton, New Jersey. “I don’t know why I retired (at age 79),” he said. “I think people retire too early.”

During his working life, he was somewhat of an introvert. You might say he’s come out of his shell here in Florida. While in line at Publix, for example, he’s been known to crack a joke or two. “I like to keep people laughing,” he said. “It took me a long time to realize that.” Gordon enlisted in the Navy in February 1942 – just two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He was discharged in December 1945. His wife of 24 years died in 1972. He raised their two children as a single dad. He was constantly worried about losing his job. What advice would he have for people in that situation today? “You’ve got to be positive,” he said. “It’s easy to say, but it’s hard for people to do.” Gordon admits he didn’t always follow his own advice. “You learn some things too late in life,” he said.
