PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Archive Center’s massive collection open to public

What is an archive? Why does Indian River County have one? What years does it cover? Is it available to the public? Archives exist in every country, state, county or city. The purpose of the Archive Center of Indian River County is to collect, organize, preserve, and make available the family and local records of permanent historical value of Indian River County and the State of Florida. Historical value is determined by what these items reflect of the persons, places, things, conditions, and problems of the area. An early donation was from the Tippin Family. They donated family photos, documents, a family Bible, and memorabilia on Indian River County. It also included a piece of wood from the Wabasso train wreck of 1917. Other donations arrived soon after the hurricane of 2004. When the television news began showing photographs of personal records scattered for miles across Florida, it gave

individuals, businesses and local historical groups cause to think about their own personal collections. In addition to books, documents, government records, photographs, postcards, clipping and vertical files, the Archive Center collects published items from the 1800s to the present for present-day Indian River, Brevard, and St. Lucie counties. For example: Vero Beach Magazine 1998 to present,

Indian River Life 1973-1982, St Lucie County Tribune 1905-1919 and, of course, Lemmon Lines, the first 52 issues. Would you like to know what was happening in a specific time and place? Read a publication for that year or month. Copies of articles are placed in a vertical file (2,500+). Search the online library catalog for any subject on Indian River County history. You may be surprised. All records are open to the public.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Whew. Time to take a breather and reflect on a very important milestone for any small business. Lemmon Lines lived to see its first birthday! I’m sure any entrepreneur can relate to my sense of elation over surviving that critical first year in business. What a wild ride it has been. How would I describe the first year as a business owner? • In a word: Satisfying. • In two words: Tremendous pressure. • In three words: Attitude of gratitude. Believe me, I know Lemmon Lines would not be here if you (and others) weren’t reading this right now. The feedback I receive while out on distribution every Monday is so heartening. It’s such a great feeling to know you’re putting out a product that people look forward to reading. The other key component of the LL equation is advertising. Some people see it as a negative. (“You have too many ads,” I’ve heard a few people say.) The reality is, advertising

is an absolute necessity – it’s what pays the bills and allows me to earn a living. I’m thankful to all of the local businesses that have advertised in these pages during the past year. There have been more than 60. In marking the one-year anniversary, I wanted to give special recognition to the 12 businesses listed in the ad on page 7. I will be forever grateful for their continued support. As I said back in Issue 1, I want Lemmon Lines to be the best advertising vehicle for local businesses. My new business partner, Catherine Caddell, came up with our slogan: “Helping local businesses find new business.” That’s why I encourage readers to support our advertisers whenever possible. working – and feedback from you is one way to do that. During the past year, it’s been a true pleasure to get to know the owners of dozens of small businesses. Such wonderful people. One business owner who will always have a special place in my heart is Josh Binafif. He is the owner of Binafif Aluminum (see the ad at the top of page 4). Back on Sept. 29, 2014, within minutes after I announced in a mass email the launch of Lemmon Lines, Josh contacted me via Facebook – yes, Facebook – to let me know he was interested in advertising. He was my first “official” sales call. Josh is only 35, but he’s “old school” with his approach to running a business. He’s a humble guy with a commitment to excellence. He deserves whatever success comes his way. One of the nicest business owners I’ve crossed paths with is Brenda Weller. She and her husband, Jim, own Kaleidoscope Consignments. Brenda and I recently had a long conversation about how

owning a business affects your personal life. At the end, we gave each other some homework. Brenda fretted that she might not be mentally prepared for the start of the season. I mentioned to her the importance of “sharpening the saw” – which is from Steven Covey’s book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” My homework assignment to Brenda: A weekend getaway with her husband sometime before the end of October. Outside the entrance of Kaleidoscope Consignments is a sign that shows Sunday and Monday as the days the store is closed. Only instead of “Closed,” it says “Beach.” I told Brenda is has been a few years since I last went to the beach. Her homework assignment for me: Spend at least an hour at the beach before the end of October. Whether in business or in life, it’s so important to keep things in perspective, isn’t it?

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

I can vouch that Maureen Nicolace knows how to keep a secret. About 18 months ago, I knew I would be quitting my job as Indian River County columnist for the Press Journal. At the time, though, I didn’t know what the next chapter in my life would be. Eventually, I decided to publish Lemmon Lines. It took several months of planning to get it to the launch pad – the debut issue was Oct. 15, 2014. Maureen, the owner of Nicolace Marketing, was part of my small “circle of trust.” You could count on two hands the number of people who knew Lemmon Lines was on the way. We met twice at the Burger King on U.S. 1 in Wabasso to

discuss strategy. What was her reaction when she first heard about my idea? “Are you crazy? This community doesn’t need another print publication. … But if anyone can make it work, it’s you – because you have a strong following,” she recalled last week during our meeting at C.J. Cannon’s.

Maureen felt strongly about three things: 1) “Your name had to be in the title”; 2) It should be printed on yellow paper; and 3) There should be a simulated citrus stamp at the top of the front page. Check, check, and check. Maureen, 52, started her business in January 2002. That came six months after being laid off at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. “I would have been there forever,” she said of Disney. But owning a business was always her long-term goal. She currently has “10 to 15” active clients.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
