PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Celebrity sightings in Vero Beach go back to early 1920s
Indian River County attracted interesting celebrities prior to 1965. Below are just a few. In the early 1920s, President William Harding visited Vero Beach often so he could play golf at Riomar. Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia of New York stopped briefly in November 1933. British aviatrix Amy Mollison, the first female pilot to fly solo from Britain to Australia, was in Vero Beach in February 1934. Famous circus clown Emmett Kelly arrived in Vero Beach in 1957 as the official mascot of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The owner of the Dodgers, Walter O’Malley, signed the contract for Kelly to entertain at Ebbets Field, spring training and the Dodgertown summer camp for boys. Kelly often could be seen in downtown Vero Beach entertaining the kids. Many pictures of Kelly can be viewed at the Archive Center. Evangelist Billy Graham started visiting Vero Beach in
1957 when he played golf at the Vero Beach Country Club. In 1960, he leased a home in Riomar for a three-month vacation. On March 31, 1961, he spoke in front of more than 6,000 people at Holman Stadium. Robin Williams, the late actor and comedian, grew up in Detroit and his neighbors moved to Vero Beach in 1958. One picture at the library, from 1959, shows 8-year-old Robin walking up the stairs of an Eastern
Airlines plane at the Vero Beach airport with the Copeland and Van Tuyl families. Edith Mosher and her husband, Eugene, moved to Vero Beach in 1960. Her daughter was Deborah Walley, who played Gidget in the movie “Gidget Goes Hawaiian.” Edith was a former star of the Ice Capades and was an artist and designer with two art studios, one in Nantucket and the other in Vero Beach called the Seachest Studio.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while making your Mother’s Day plans:
• Remind me to never coordinate two “big” events in the same month again. That said, it’s tough to beat the level of satisfaction when both events exceed your expectations – which was the case for me in April. First up was the college draft in my “fantasy” football league. My team, the Sebastian Swordfish, hosted 10 guys from around the United States and Canada. You should have heard the guys rave about their trip. They loved Historic Dodgertown, Sandridge Golf Course, the Ocean Grill and the Navy SEAL Museum. They spent most of their time at Capt Hiram’s, which was our home base. I can’t say enough about how Will Collins, the resort’s general manager, made the guys feel special. They were very appreciative.
Four exhausting days, but well worth it. They’re going to remember the trip to Sebastian for a long, long time. The other event, held two days later, was work-related. Lemmon Lines hosted the “Strategies to Survive the Summer” workshop at the Hampton Inn & Suites in the Miracle Mile area. While it wasn’t as stressful as coordinating the football draft (because others were doing the presentations), this one mattered more to me. As publisher of a weekly newsletter, I feel I have an obligation to help small businesses. That’s why I wanted to host the 90-minute workshop. I was heartened by the response of those in attendance. They loved John Lindsey’s spirited presentation on overcoming challenges and were intrigued by Stacy Cook’s thoughts on digital marketing.

John was so impressed with Vero Beach that he and his wife, Gayle, stayed here three additional nights. They live in Mississippi.• Roger Baker’s email gave me a jolt: “Learned that the iconic Boardwalk Ice Cream Shop is closing on April 30th after continuous operation since 1965 (although owners changed). We can’t recall how many relatives and visiting friends we took over there to watch a full moon on the ocean while eating some of the best ice cream in Vero Beach.” The prevailing rumor: The building will be torn down to make room for condos.• Less than two weeks after land west of Velde Ford was cleared to make way for a new Dollar General Store, a sign was put up for a new Dollar Tree store adjacent to Staples. Lest we forget the new Family Dollar store on Oslo Road and 27th Avenue. Indian River County has got to be getting close to the saturation point for “dollar” stores.• Why is it that when I drive on 14th Avenue in downtown
Vero Beach, I rarely see anyone walking yet most of the parking spaces are taken? Could it be employees – and not customers – are parked in front of the stores?• In this space last week, I mentioned the clunker of a name that is the Indian River County Intergenerational Facility. (It’s the huge building under construction on Oslo Road.) “Left on its own, someone will try to come up with a nickname – we’d better come up with one,” Pam Birchler said in an email. She offered Big Red Rec Center or simply Big Red. Do you have an idea for a nickname? • Memo to Cumberland Farms: The price of a gallon of gas with a SmartPay card should never be more than the price at other gas stations. (You can buy gas cheaper at several stations in Sebastian than you can with Cumberland’s SmartPay card in Vero Beach.)• Sitting at a traffic signal on 58th Avenue, I smiled when I saw this Wisconsin license plate: “ILOVERO”

We’ve finally moved, to 983 12th Street, behind the Car Wash.
Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
The Volunteer Ambulance Squad has been around for 50 years now. It started in 1966 as the emergency transportation for the county. Since 1989, it has been strictly non-emergency transportation to medical appointments. April Hargett has been the administrator for the past 19 years. She started as a driver in 1993 before moving to her current role four years later. She coordinates roughly 14,000 one-way trips each year. The nonprofit organization has 10 vehicles and transports about 35 people a day. “It’s a lot of trying to put things together,” she said. “It’s kind of like a big puzzle.”
There’s never a charge to be transported to a medical appointment. There are no age or financial requirements to use the service, which runs totally on donations. The Volunteer Ambulance Squad has “grown tremendously” in recent years, April said. She described it this way: “It was so easy and slow in my ‘early days’ that I
took my daughter, Danica, to work with me all day, every day, from the time she was 5 weeks old until she was 2-and-a-half. She grew up having 40 ‘uncles,’ and some of her first words were the names of drivers!” she said. “There is no way I could have an infant or toddler there now, even for 30 minutes.” The organization is trying to locate former volunteers to let them know about the 50-year celebration scheduled for May 7 at the River House. Call 231-1230 with information about former volunteers.
