Understanding Beliefs“Mental models are the images, assumptions, and stories, which we carry in our minds of ourselves, other people, institutions and their aspect of the world. Like a pane of glass framing and subtly distorting our visions, mental models determine what we see. Human beings cannot navigate through the complex environments of our world without cognitive “mental maps”; and these mental maps, by definition, are flawed in some way”

Understanding Career BeliefsSupporting:“I like to write.”“I am a excellent musician.”I know I can find or create work I like.

Limiting:“No one would hire a person like me.”“There are no jobs out there.”“There are no opportunities for the work I like.”

Beliefs Can Affect: Choosing trades, college or university programs Finding an appropriate work role Rebounding after a job loss Dealing with job burnout Negotiating for a promotion Getting along with a boss and coworkers

Changing Our Minds

3 steps to challenging troublesome beliefs:

1.Identifying the troublesome belief, 2.Considering alternative ways of viewing the problem, and 3.Taking action incompatible with the troublesome belief.

Identify Your Limiting Beliefs Find a partner, take

turns counselling each other

Share about some hopes or dreams you have about something you would like to do but don’t think is realistic

The counsellor is to listen for potentially limiting beliefs

Listen for phrases like:

1. I want to… but…

2. I can’t… because…

3. If it weren’t for…I would…

4. Being realistic, I…

5. I have to… because…

Breathing Technique

Please sit with your lower back against the chair, your feet flat on the floor, and your arms and hands open.

Relax, close your eyes, and take three long, deep breaths.

Please Share Your Perceptions

Take a moment to collect your thoughts and reflect upon your experience

Find a partner and share your perceptions

Review Your Beliefs1. Change “but” to “and”

2. Change “can’t” to “won’t”

3. Substitute what you might be thinking, feeling, expecting, or doing that is interfering with solving the problem

4. Change “have” to “choose”

5. Write “my” followed by whatever fits

Act or Let Go Look for new

information Get support Confront a key person State my needs clearly Ask myself what I am

doing that is a problem Examine my own

Ask if the situation is the way it is for a reason
