Draw quickly and add the details later with Schneider Electric Designer Express.

When you’re working on designs, sometimes it’s more efficient to create simple sketches first — big picture plans without the nitty-gritty construction details to slow you down.

That’s the idea behind Schneider Electric’s Designer Express. Like Designer, Designer Express has the ability to enhance a work sketch with GIS information, materials needed, and labor costs — but with this important difference: You can choose instead to work in a more streamlined, less detailed fashion.

It’s a fast, easy-to-use tool created specifically for design engineers who prefer not to identify each and every material or compatible unit needed to construct new facilities.

Once a sketch has been created, you can add details later, or if you choose, just pass your design to the ArcFM™ editing group to complete the as-built design. This takes the responsibility for data management away from you, the design engineer, and places it on the GIS technician — a division of responsibilities that’s especially ideal for utilities where union labor contracts exist.

Just click, drag and drawWith Designer Express, you won’t be slowed by too much information. We’ve made it easy for you to create designs simply by clicking, dragging and drawing. The easy-to-use interface of Designer Express provides a set of palettes containing items logically organized around typical work functions, such as residential gas service or overhead line construction. You simply select materials or facilities from a palette and place them into your sketch.

Fully configurable, the palettes can be tailored to reflect your company’s construction standards, or you can create your own collection of palettes containing the items you use most. You can choose to associate materials with a corresponding graphic to place directly into the sketch, or you can select and apply the materials later.

Fast, simple to use, and supports a diverse set of work flows common in electric, gas, water, and telecom utilities.

For example, planning water service to a row of homes is as easy as selecting a size of pipe from the plastic pipe palette, drawing the line, and snapping it into the map. Choose the meter icon, click one onto a wall in each home, and Designer Express automatically snaps them into the sketch. It’s quick and intuitive, with the drawing and snap-in-place functionality your CAD users are accustomed to.

Designer Express’s built-in flexibility allows you to work at the level of detail necessary to create the work sketch — but not necessarily the level of detail needed for asset management and the ArcFM geodatabase. And it’s ideal for utilities when outsourcing construction. You provide the design, and your contractors specify costs and materials in their bids.
