Critics contend that we should be able to get all the nutrients we need from a healthy diet. Worse, it is hard to prove that supplements really work, as studies of vitamin and antioxidant supplements have shown conflicting results. For example, instead of swallowing a probiotic pill, you can eat yogurt and kimchi. Seventy percent of Brits don’t ever socialise with their neighbours, and 73 percent don’t make any time for community activities, according to an insurance industry survey. Only 23 percent know their neighbours by name, and 22 percent won’t even say hi to them on the streets. We shop online or out of town, we find people with shared interests on the Internet and we have less and less need for community places like libraries. As the dean of admissions at an American university, I am often asked about our admissions procedures. Is our system fair? Is it the best we can do? By comparing our system to others around the world, we can get an idea of how we are doing. アメリカの大学の入試事務局長として、私はよく入試の手順について尋ねられます。当大学の方式は公平でし

In India, Japan and Korea, high school students are under a tremendous amount of pressure. With few exceptions, they must do well on standardized exams to be admitted to college. In Finland, like here in Japan, university admissions focus on exams, but there is no weight given to personal essays or extracurricular activities because the Finnish system strives to be as objective as possible. Japan’s current system of 47 prefectures has been more or less in place since 1890, but prefectural borders have hardly been set in stone. The first prefectures, partially based on the old han, or feudal domains, were delineated by the Meiji government in 1871. At one point there were over 300. But within 20 years, prefectures were divided or merged, new ones, including Hokkaido and Okinawa, were added, and Japan’s modern internal borders were set. 日本の現在の 47都道府県の制度は、1890年以来おおむね実施されてきていますが、県境はほとんど確定され

A capital city is supposed to be the world’s window into a country and the place all citizens look to for leadership and inspiration. But while Tokyo is exciting and convenient, as a capital it doesn’t measure up. Tokyo gives foreign visitors the impression that there’s little more to Japan than neon and crowded trains. It fails to inspire domestically too, with its pollution, concrete and claustrophobia. Worse, it’s one of the most natural-disaster-prone areas in the world, creating a significant risk to our government. But if I’m elected to the Diet, I and my party will support the Resolution to Reinstate Kyoto as Our Capital. Kyoto’s beauty, history, safety, cultural significance, lower pollution and smaller population make it a city that can inspire and show our country at its best. 首都というものは世界からその国に入る窓であり、すべての国民がリーダーシップとインスピレーションを求

Tokyo is the envy of the world. Our capital is stunning: simultaneously modern and historical, both vibrant and tranquil—an inspiration to people everywhere. But the resolution to move the capital ignores this all. Any such move would be extremely damaging to our country. Kyoto is a beautiful place—I’m originally from Kyoto myself—but it pales in comparison to Tokyo as a global city. Tokyo’s industry, infrastructure, low crime rates and creativity outstrip not only Kyoto, but arguably anywhere else in the world. It is home to more important companies and top restaurants than anywhere else on the planet. And while Tokyo is not perfect, any challenges it faces can be overcome. Our ancestors recognized Tokyo’s importance when they declared it as our capital, and it remains just as important today. THE NAME YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR CHILD will probably stay with them their entire life, so it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. And there’s a whole lot to consider: meanings (not just the one you intended!), nicknames, spellings, initials, associations with famous people, family history and more. There’s even research suggesting a child’s name influences their eventual career. It’s intimidating! Last December, in Toronto, I went shopping for a new daily planner for the coming year. I searched in bookstores and stationery shops, but there were few options. I wondered why, so I asked a clerk in a bookstore. She said that these days a lot of people use their smartphones as daily planners, so the market for paper ones is dying. The truth is, I’m a bit of a Luddite. Of course, I use technology every day when I drive my car, watch TV or use my laptop. But I’m distrustful of new technology and often think that we were better off in the old days. Nowadays, most of us spend too much time surfing the Web and texting and not enough time interacting face to face. Children sit on benches at the park crouched over video games instead of running and playing. On a larger scale, technology has made quite a mess of our world, from factory pollution to agricultural pesticides to nuclear accidents. 実は私はちょっとしたラッダイトなんです。もちろん車を運転したり、テレビを観たり、ノートパソコンを使

Re “Japan’s English Scores Among Worst in Asia” (April 14): Once again, Japan ranks among the likes of Thailand and Saudi Arabia in English proficiency. It is no small wonder that after years of studying the language, most newly minted graduates from the high school where I teach English are still unable to have a simple conversation in the language. 「日本の英語スコアはアジアの中で最下位」（4月 14日）に関して：繰り返しになりますが、日本は英語能力

においてタイとサウジアラビアなどの国々と同じような順位です。私が英語を教えている高校では、何年も英

It’s easy to guess why Japan’s failure to learn English has persisted. One obvious problem is the education system. Though it’s getting better, English education in Japan has tended to focus on grammar and reading comprehension in order to help students pass university entrance exams. Of course, inadequate language learning is not unique to Japan.
