‘Raw’ Inventory Data: incorrect, incoherent & costly

Hidden spaces & character causes‘count-split’, forcing manual counts

Title ErrorsMinor version (7.01, 7.02),model version (XP, CS) and values thataren’t numbers (1.0.0.3)make for next-to-impossible analysis.

Version ErrorsToo many ‘Adobe’ like variations;and sometimesno publisher data at all.

What is ‘Raw’ Inventory Data?

What is the problem with ‘Raw’ Inventory Data?

Raw inventory data is the un-modified inventory datacreated during the installation of an application.

Typically, ‘raw’ inventory data includes:Software TitleSoftware VersionPublisher Name

There’s no rules or standards to ensurethat software publishers properly populatetheir ‘installation’ data.

Some publishers put the version within the title,or use many variations of their name,or simply don’t fill in the data at all!

These problems make software reportsa nightmare to use for your license analysis;the final ‘count’ of a software title is fragmented throughout your report (or spreadsheet)causing you to manually search for the software, then and add up the values!

Any error in your calculations will cause you to be ‘under-licensed’,That could lead to unexpected budget ‘impacts’ (for internal audits)or unexpected true-up fees and/or fines (for external audits).

What are the risks?

Using ‘Raw’ Inventory Data for license analysismay cost you....

rebuilds & reorganizes your datausing ‘asset-intelligent’ algorithms

Applications from a publisher that no longer exists automatically merged to the publisher who acquired it.

Normalize all spelling variations (including foreign languages) into a single software title.

Industry First: Auto-fill missing software versions, Publishers and even Software titles!

Another Industry First: software titles are automatically placed into Product Line ‘Family Trees’ for immediate analysis

Convert all model names (CS, XP, etc.), minor versions, etc., into a licensing ‘value’.

For each publisher, ‘Family Trees’ for each Product Line can be expanded to review

Easily choose between:?Auditable Line of Business?Non-Auditable Line of Business

Each title has a specific license type - grouped by ‘audit’ (volume, retail, etc.) or ‘non-audit (freeware, trial, etc.) as well as a usage type - grouped by ‘business’ (Security, IT Mgmt, Office app) or ‘ Distraction (game, P2P, DVD burning, etc.)

Version ‘Clustering’ - with 84% of installs within 2 versions - suggest support & productivity optimization.

Though Visio 2003 is the standard,147 end-users could upgrade,

No variable ‘pay-per-PC’ fees.

Use your current Inventory tool....

If you don’t have a product that offers PC Inventory, there are several solutions that include PC Inventory as part of their free offerings:

?Spiceworks ?SAManage

If you have a network management or PC Inventory application, all you need is a ‘software title count’ report exported to an ‘XLS’ file.

That’s it. AssetCheck works with network management products like:

?Microsoft SMS & SCCM?Altiris?Landesk

and Service-now.com !

...or use a freeinventory tool

AssetCheck

No Inventory agent to install.

Reduce SAM audit review timesup to 90%Your AssetCheck reports -complete with categorization - are typically ready in 24 hours or less.

Whether you have 500 or 50,000 PCs, the AssetCheck’s sticker price is still the same.

All you need is your ‘software count’ report from your PC inventory or Network Management tool.

Maintain end-user data privacySince there is no PC Inventory required, the details of ‘who-has-what’ remains with you, not us. You maintain end-user privacy.
