Hafter, Ernst: Praktische Gastroenterologie.lPractical Gastroenterology. Sixth, newly revised edition with 245 figures in 385 single images and 10 tables. Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart 1978. Cloth. OM 128,-. Comparison of the newest, sixth edition of "Hafter" with previous editions highlights the stormy development of gastroenterology and hepatology in recent years. All chapters are revised and expanded. A new chapter written by the author is devoted to gastrointestinal hormones. The book is written by a clinician primarily for clinicians and practicing physicians. The morphologist will be greatly satisfied by the high importance which the author places upon morphologic biopsy investigations. This finds its expression in the subtle descriptions of different biopsy methods and their limitations, as well as in the inclusion of morphologic findings in the discussion of disease entities. For one involved in daily diagnosis of biopsy materials, often with scant clinical data, this book is also very helpful in providing general information, especially as regards their numerous and excellent radiographs. In nearly every clinical chapter (diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, etc.), the investigational methods are sketched out in advance. Physiology and pathophysiology are developed in detail in subchapters of the individual sections. The final chapter, entitled "Com- plaints without Objective Findings", is of particular interest. This chapter deals with unrecog- nized organic diseases, functional disturbances, and immunologic disturbances of the gastroin- testinal tract, and gives further therapeutic suggestions. The layout of the book is excellent, and justifies the substantially increased price, which the interested reader will gladly pay. One great advantage is that each chapter has its own list of references. In the appendix there is a list of important gastroenterologic and hepatologic journals and monographs. A clinical reviewer wishes that every discipline of internal medicine had its own "Hatter". The gastroenterologically oriented morphologist can simply be happy that the "Hatter" is available to him as a clinical compendium.
