    9.(a) A student wrote a few statements about butane.

    But-1-ene reacts with hydrogen to form butane. Butane undergoes substitution

    reaction with bromine to form 2-bromobutane.

    (b) State reagent used in the conversion of butan-1-ol to butanoic acid.

    (c)(i) Draw the structure of an isomer of butanoic acid

    (ii) State 2 organic compounds that react to give the above isomer.

    (iii) Compare the boiling points of

    (I) butan-1-ol and butane. (Explain your answer in term of attractive force.)

    10. An alkanoic acid of mass 5g undergoes complete combustion and the gaseous

    products are passed through two conical flasks containing sodium hydroxide

    solution(flask A) and anhydrous calcium chloride(flask B) respectively. The

    following table shows the result of the experiment.

    (a) Find empirical formula of the alkanoic acid.

    (b) Given the molecular mass of the alkanoic acid is 118, deduce the structure of

    the acid.

    (c) The alkanoic acid can be used to manufacture polymer in daily life. For

    example, benzene-1,4-diamine will be used to form polymer with the alkanoic

    acid in (b). Write a chemical equation of the polymerization.

    (Hint: structure of benzene-1,4-diamine NH2H2N )

    (d) Explain why the above polymer formed is biodegradable?

    (e) State another polymer which has the same thermal property as the above

    polymer.
