The aggravation of global environmental, social and eco-nomic issues requires us to change the way to design citiesand buildings. Cities need to be designed more diverse,compact and well-connected with street networks and pub-lic transit systems. Districts and buildings need to bedesigned to accommodate a variety of human activities andmore responsive to the local environment, context and cul-ture.

This course focuses on the physical environment of ci-ties, city elements, and the relationship between buildingsand public spaces, and students will deepen their under-standing of these topics through lectures and researches.The course also focuses on the practical method and theprocess of urban planning and design, and students will ac-quire the practical ability through lectures and assign-ments.

Acquire comprehensive knowledge concerning the mor-phology and history of Japanese cities and urban architec-ture mainly focusing on EdoTokyo, which serves as a ba-sis for urban design and architectural design in the urbancontext.Specific Objectives:

The project management is essential in all aspects of ar-chitectural and urban improvement endeavors. Planning,design, and construction can lead to a great piece of ar-chitecture or urban improvement only through sensibleproject management. The needs of management in factstart with the architect's own practice, his/her ˆrm, as wellas relationship building with the clients.

As a part of the Professional Course, this course empha-sizes, not the design talents and technical and legal exper-tise in planning and designing of a built environment,which are what architects sell, but how to market, package,and deliver them in a sustainable business context, with ahope that the student will be equipped with the basicknowledge of the real life rigor of business of architecture,once he/she leaves the academia, with an emphasis on theglobal market.
