Problem: Company had an 802.11 system and were attempting to provide broadband wireless Internet services to businesses and community in Park City, Utah. The equipment was not designed for outdoor usage, had poor performance and was unable to scale. Mountain Wireless was getting ready to close its doors when they discovered Canopy. Providing Point-to-Point & hotspots. Enabling streaming video
Solution: Redeploy the 802.11 system for internal wireless LAN service and deploy the Canopy system in both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations.
Results: Outstanding services that are uniquely developed for this mountain community. Service include: hot spot coverage for over 30 businesses in the downtown area (coffee shops, retail establishments and restaurants). Hot spot coverage at three mountain resorts (Canyons, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort) where service is available for the public areas and ski lifts. Guests can use their PDAs while in public areas and on ski lifts to check e-mail and make on-line reservations at local restaurants (Mountain Wireless has integrated the reservation systems). Solves large problem for restaurants who simply don’t have enough phone lines to support the busy hours. E-mail is pushed to restaurant and back to guest confirming reservation. Finally, integration of ski tickets enabling skiers to ski all three resorts in a single day. Process: Ticket is scanned with hand held scanners, all data is fed back to the central servers over the Canopy system. The guest is authenticated and begins the skiing adventure. Also great branding opportunity for establishment. When guest uses services on PDA, a welcome page is pushed from the resort.

Problem: Monitoring and controlling remote stretches of highway in Minnesota for hazardous weather conditions. Previously closing the highway took over 2 hours and physically required that an individual went out to the site, overcome large snowbanks, turn on the lights, crank down the gate. MDOT was interested in automating the process.
Solution: Install wireless video cameras along Highway US 71 and I-90 and use the Canopy system to relay real-time images back to the control center. When snow/weather reaches a particular level, gates need to be lowered on the highway removing access to the area and warnings have to be posted to Motorists.
Result: The Canopy system has been in operation for two winters. Results are spectacular. The Canopy modules are mounted on 29 foot light poles and have withstood winds in excess of 50 miles/per/hour and -60° F (wind chills) temperatures. There are four gates and four cameras (capable of zooming, panning and tilting) that monitor the roads. If they find it necessary to close the roads (through weather forecasts and video monitoring of the sites, the roads can be closed and motorists notified in approximately 45 seconds. All of this is done from a centralized location and does not require that an individual visit each one of these sites.

Problem: Supporting the ongoing recovery operation taking place in East Texas. For the second phase Team 1 with the U.S. Forest Service, FEMA, EPA & NASA set up their ICP (incident command post) in Palestine, TX. This ICP has over 1000 personnel with admin support. No major telecommunications carrier could supply the bandwidth for the amount of data they are moving and estimates for installation were between two and four weeks.
Solution: Using the Motorola Canopy product the disaster recovery team fully functional with 3.5 mbps / 800 mbps data circuit in operation in less than 24 hours. Nalcom mounted a cluster management module at 340 feet on our corporate office tower and made the path of 3.6 miles to the ICP.
Results: Needless to say the IT personnel with the ICP were remarkably impressed. The system is operating at 5.2 MHz and is not using a reflector dish to reach the SMs.

Employee Parking Facilities at Newark International Airport
Problem: Safety/security of remote parking lots for employees and the associated costs/reliability of these services.
Solution: Working with Omni Security and Vanguard Managed Solutions, FDDI used Canopy to set-up centralized video monitoring center. Full motion video cameras with sound were installed in each one of the employee parking lots. Constant surveillance of the lots is provided via the cameras and sent over Motorola’s Canopy point-to-point system. In addition, the guard stations are manned with telephones that connect through the PBX to the Vanguard platform where the analog voice is converted to VOIP using the Vanguard platform and ultimately connected with the central facility. All information is relayed back to centralized monitoring center through the Canopy Solution. There are five pairs of Canopy backhaul modules.
Results: More than 18 to 22 full motion cameras have been installed in three different parking lots. Video surveillance, control of gates for entrance/exit and telephony services are provided. One camera in each location is capable of controlling the pan, tilt and zoom. Better performance, lower costs, and heightened security. Performance is excellent.

Problem: Company had an 802.11 system and were attempting to provide broadband wireless Internet services to businesses and community in Park City, Utah. The equipment was not designed for outdoor usage, had poor performance and was unable to scale. Mountain Wireless was getting ready to close its doors when they discovered Canopy. Providing Point-to-Point & hotspots. Enabling streaming video
Solution: Redeploy the 802.11 system for internal wireless LAN service and deploy the Canopy system in both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations.
Results: Outstanding services that are uniquely developed for this mountain community. Service include: hot spot coverage for over 30 businesses in the downtown area (coffee shops, retail establishments and restaurants). Hot spot coverage at three mountain resorts (Canyons, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort) where service is available for the public areas and ski lifts. Guests can use their PDAs while in public areas and on ski lifts to check e-mail and make on-line reservations at local restaurants (Mountain Wireless has integrated the reservation systems). Solves large problem for restaurants who simply don’t have enough phone lines to support the busy hours. E-mail is pushed to restaurant and back to guest confirming reservation. Finally, integration of ski tickets enabling skiers to ski all three resorts in a single day. Process: Ticket is scanned with hand held scanners, all data is fed back to the central servers over the Canopy system. The guest is authenticated and begins the skiing adventure. Also great branding opportunity for establishment. When guest uses services on PDA, a welcome page is pushed from the resort.

Problem: Monitoring and controlling remote stretches of highway in Minnesota for hazardous weather conditions. Previously closing the highway took over 2 hours and physically required that an individual went out to the site, overcome large snowbanks, turn on the lights, crank down the gate. MDOT was interested in automating the process.
Solution: Install wireless video cameras along Highway US 71 and I-90 and use the Canopy system to relay real-time images back to the control center. When snow/weather reaches a particular level, gates need to be lowered on the highway removing access to the area and warnings have to be posted to Motorists.
Result: The Canopy system has been in operation for two winters. Results are spectacular. The Canopy modules are mounted on 29 foot light poles and have withstood winds in excess of 50 miles/per/hour and -60° F (wind chills) temperatures. There are four gates and four cameras (capable of zooming, panning and tilting) that monitor the roads. If they find it necessary to close the roads (through weather forecasts and video monitoring of the sites, the roads can be closed and motorists notified in approximately 45 seconds. All of this is done from a centralized location and does not require that an individual visit each one of these sites.

Problem: Supporting the ongoing recovery operation taking place in East Texas. For the second phase Team 1 with the U.S. Forest Service, FEMA, EPA & NASA set up their ICP (incident command post) in Palestine, TX. This ICP has over 1000 personnel with admin support. No major telecommunications carrier could supply the bandwidth for the amount of data they are moving and estimates for installation were between two and four weeks.
Solution: Using the Motorola Canopy product the disaster recovery team fully functional with 3.5 mbps / 800 mbps data circuit in operation in less than 24 hours. Nalcom mounted a cluster management module at 340 feet on our corporate office tower and made the path of 3.6 miles to the ICP.
Results: Needless to say the IT personnel with the ICP were remarkably impressed. The system is operating at 5.2 MHz and is not using a reflector dish to reach the SMs.

Employee Parking Facilities at Newark International Airport
Problem: Safety/security of remote parking lots for employees and the associated costs/reliability of these services.
Solution: Working with Omni Security and Vanguard Managed Solutions, FDDI used Canopy to set-up centralized video monitoring center. Full motion video cameras with sound were installed in each one of the employee parking lots. Constant surveillance of the lots is provided via the cameras and sent over Motorola’s Canopy point-to-point system. In addition, the guard stations are manned with telephones that connect through the PBX to the Vanguard platform where the analog voice is converted to VOIP using the Vanguard platform and ultimately connected with the central facility. All information is relayed back to centralized monitoring center through the Canopy Solution. There are five pairs of Canopy backhaul modules.
Results: More than 18 to 22 full motion cameras have been installed in three different parking lots. Video surveillance, control of gates for entrance/exit and telephony services are provided. One camera in each location is capable of controlling the pan, tilt and zoom. Better performance, lower costs, and heightened security. Performance is excellent.
