Prime Minister of Australia’s Message

As Prime Minister of Australia I am delighted that the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will be held in Perth, Western Australia, from 28 to 30 October 2011.  

Australia is a committed and active member of the Commonwealth and takes great pride in being the first nation to host CHOGM three times, with Melbourne hosting in 1981, Coolum in 2002 and Perth 2011.  

CHOGM  2011 will  provide  a  unique  opportunity  for  Commonwealth  leaders  to  gather  and  discuss  the  challenges  of  our  times.  I  look  forward  to welcoming Commonwealth  leaders  from  near  and  far  to our shores for this significant event.  

I am particularly eager to welcome business  leaders from within as well as outside the Commonwealth to participate in the Commonwealth Business Forum.  

The Commonwealth Business Forum will be held  from 25 to 27 October 2011 and  focus on the pertinent theme “Partnering for Global Growth: The Commonwealth, Indian Ocean and Pacific Rim”.  

Over  100  eminent  speakers  and  panellists  and  hundreds  of  delegates  are  expected  to  attend  the  Commonwealth Business Forum.  

The Forum will, as it has in the past, provide an extraordinary opportunity for business and government to network on practices and policies for the enhancement of global trade and investment. The Forum will also allow for comprehensive dialogue with the private sector.  

The Australian Government looks forward to welcoming the Commonwealth business sector to Australia to showcase the strengths of our nation. We have a strong financial sector, our businesses are plugged  into global supply chains and we have energy and resources that are critical to economies around the world.  

I  join Dr Mohan Kaul, Director‐General of  the Commonwealth Business Council  in encouraging business, big and small, to get involved and consider the opportunities available to support, promote and participate in  the  Commonwealth  Business  Forum,  to  network  with  policy makers,  key  government  officials  and  business leaders.

Premier of Western Australia’s Message

Western Australia  is blessed with extraordinary mineral and energy  resources;  food and  fish production; and advanced and highly capable service industries for these sectors.  

In  international  trade, Western  Australia  punches  above  its weight,  producing more  than  one  third  of  Australia’s exports with just one tenth of the nation’s population. In fact, Western Australian is the source of 66 per cent of all Australian exports to China, 42 per cent of Australian exports to India and 33 per cent of Australian exports to Japan.  

Currently, Western  Australia  is  rapidly  expanding  its  relationship  with  Asia  and  the  Indian  Ocean  rim  countries. Given the long term growth prospects of these regions, the State’s share of the nation’s exports is likely to grow even larger over the next decade.  

Not surprisingly, global resource and service companies have a major presence  in Western Australia. The combination of natural resources, relative proximity to Asian markets and the comfort of doing business in a first world nation with both political and legal stability make the State an attractive business centre and overseas investment continues to be welcomed here.  

However,  the  business  conditions  enjoyed  in Western  Australia  and  are  not  simply  the  result  of  luck.  Industry and governments of all levels must work together to maintain the optimum settings to encourage resilience, enterprise and innovation.  

The Commonwealth Business Forum in Perth  in October 2011 will be an ideal opportunity to explore how other Commonwealth countries can address  these challenges and  link  into  the massive growth of north Asia and India.  

And while in Western Australia I encourage you to take time before and after the Commonwealth Business Forum  to  experience  the  extraordinary  landscapes,  culture,  adventure  and  food.  Explore  the  amazing  Kimberley  in the north, the wonderful Margaret River region and  its world famous wines to the south; or simply take time to truly discover Perth and our port city of Fremantle.

Doing Business at CBF 2011

The  Forum will  feature  a  project  portfolio  of  investment proposals that are  looking for   funding, equity or business partners.  The  Business  Matching  Centre  will  enable   participants  to  meet  with  potential  investors,  investment bankers, and   potential knowledge partners to present their projects.  Project  summaries  will  be  available  in  advance  to  interested investors and partners, and  project holders will be available for one‐to‐one meetings.  Projects  will  be  organised  by  country  and  sector  and  include  business  plans   with  identified      requirements  in terms  of  investment  required,  technical  and  knowledge‐  

 based  requirements.  For  potential  investors,  this  is  an opportunity to establish strong partnerships and explore  investment  opportunities  in  key  sectors  such  as  ICT,  financial  services,  tourism,  infrastructure,  agriculture, manufacturing and the environment.  The Centre will bring together entrepreneurs looking to access  finance  and  new  markets,  investors  and  companies  looking  for  new  markets  or  projects,  and companies looking for external markets and knowledge partnerships to improve their competitiveness.    

B2B Forum activities will include:

 

a  Business  Matching  Lounge  for  meetings  between  project  holders  and  potential  investors/partners 

 

a  project  book  and  online    webpage  with  summaries  of    projects  and  short  profiles  of   potential partners/investors 

 

an  Exhibition Centre to enable companies/countries to showcase products and services 

 

The  opportunity  to  present  country  or  sector  strategies in breakout sessions of the Forum
