FROM THE PASTOR

Rosemary Bell is the Executive Director of Greater Greenwood United Ministries, an organization with which

most folks who live in the Greenwood area are very familiar. GGUM, supported by local churches (including

this one) and foundations, provides assistance to those in need in our area. We just received the April

newsletter last week. In it, Mrs. Bell provided a thought-provoking reflection. Here is a portion of it:

"In three short months, just as He did with the plagues of Egypt, God has taken away our idols. God said,

"You want to worship athletes, I will shut down the stadiums. You want to worship musicians, I will shut

down the Civic Centers. You want to worship actors, I will shut down theaters. You want to worship money,

I will shut down the economy and collapse the stock market. You don't want to come to church and worship

Me, I will make it where you can't go to church."

My own reflection on her thoughts: Did God actually cause all this to teach us a lesson? I'm not willing to go

that far -- maybe He did, and maybe He didn't. There's no way to tell for sure. But that does not change the

fact that for a person who has faith and believes in God, everything in life can be a way of listening to

God. For example, God probably doesn't directly cause that person who annoys you so badly to be that way,

but that doesn't mean that you can't use such a situation to grow in the virtues of patience and

charity. Similarly, whether the good Lord directly caused the current pandemic or not, it doesn't mean that we

can't draw valuable spiritual lessons from it. The fact of the matter is, for anyone with eyes to see and ears to

hear, that in modern America we do, in fact, worship money, and professional athletes, and actors, and so

forth. You need only look at the amount of money involved in those things to know on what peoples' hearts

truly are set. And it ain't the Lord.

Every single one of us most certainly needs to take this time we now have to examine honestly where our

hearts truly lie. Is it with God (whom we so readily take for granted) or is it the latest trend, fashion, actor,

athlete, etc.? As Jesus says in Matthew 6:21: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Is

my treasure Christ or the world? Fr. Tebalt
