Abstract
This action rsearch resstudy, with field of research located in communities, aims to construct
a community-based social support model for families in domestic violence through the
community action made by community workers and volunteers. The period of field study
ranges from the beginning of August 2016 to the end of June 2017, experiencing three stages
of action cycle, namely, initiating and planning, acting, and finally amending and looking
ahead. Based on the research action, this study produces results and reflections, making
recommendations and proposing strategies for the prevention and control of domestic
violence. The results of the study are as follows:
(1) The steps to enhance community social support include, firstly, the self-identification of
community workers; secondly, the commitment of community volunteers; thirdly, the
strengthening of community awareness; fourthly, the participation of citizens; and finally,
the ability of observation and innovation of the community volunteers.
(2) Social bonding theory entails a process of dynamic development, which begins with
social participation, then comes social connection, and ends in the creation of social
altruism behavior.
(3) The social bonding of the social support model emphasizes the empowerment of
individuals, systems, and organizations, including releasing the internal stereotypical
mindsets, producing effective activities and strategies, participating in voluntary
organizations full of positive energy, thinking reflexively of the situations of the families
in violence, and building networks and extending community influence.
(4) The social bonding of the social support from the communities of families in domestic
violence contains instrumental, emotional, cognitive as well as environmental support.
The course of action starts from the "participation" in the process of preparation, the
"attachment" to effective organizations, the "commitment" nourished by positive
experiences, and the "faith" in altruistic behaviors.

This study suggests: (1) from a policy perspective, that the practice of community
empowerment should be extended to the prevention of domestic violence, and should be
practical to local communities in relation to the co-learning mechanism of the five elements of
community development (human, culture, geography, industry, and landscape) and the
empowerment of sustainable human resources; (2) from a practical perspective, that it is
needed to established a community work practice in the prevention of domestic violence, and
the ice breaking techniques and conceptual foundation should be strengthened; and (3) for
future research: that large-scale longitudinal, or in-depth observation of community-based
research on the prevention of domestic violence could be conducted.
