TaSTE PErfECTIon for fooD PErfECTIonISTS

•Written by Elizabeth Riggio Photos by Lee Seul

My aunt always likes to tell me that someone who isn’t Italian can’t make a good pizza. Well, Chef GuJaTae, owner of Zione Pizzeria, would certainly give her a run for her money. If you’ve ever enjoyed the delicious freshly-baked bread of Little Italia, then it is time you checked out Zione. both restaurants are owned and operated by Chef GuJaTae, who’s story is as inspiring as his food’s flavor. This food will have you feeling like you’re eating your Italian grandma’s homemade food from the old country.

Zione is a quaint restaurant hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the main street in downtown. This is no accident. Chef Gu opened his newest restaurant with the hope that it will become a small hidden gem of Daegu. And it certainly is.

The entrance of Zione is located in the “back” of the restaurant. There is a small garden and outdoor seat-ing area leading up to a small establishment that has its sleek brick oven as the central focus. The kitchen area is open with the seating located around it. The ceramic tiles on the walls and high industrial beams on the ceiling give it a very enticing and rustic feel. but certainly the oven steals the show. Taking six months

in total to finish, the oven’s materials have all been imported from Italy. Chef Gu says when he was in Italy he was inspired by the taste that a wood-burning oven could give to a pizza. Many Italian restaurants in korea use gas or electric brick ovens but what makes his oven special is the use of wood. It gives the pizza a very real taste.

The taste of one of these pizzas is undeniable. We were able to try the Margherita pizza, a classic. Or perhaps a not-so-classic classic. The crust is thin and malleable and has a light yet distinctive wood-burning smell and taste. The mozzarella cheese dollops are fresh as well as the ripe basil. but most certainly the best part of this pizza is the sauce. Made with extra virgin olive oil that is kept in a copper jar to keep from oxidizing, this olive oil is from Italy and gives the sauce a light and tasty flavor. The sauce is so light and fresh, you’ll forget that any other type of sauce existed before.

Have you ever heard of Cavatelli pasta? If you haven’t yet, you will now. It is a soft noodle pasta that looks like a knot. This melt-in-your-mouth pasta is served with meaty eggplant bites that contain that same wonderful smoky, fiery taste that the pizza has. It’s topped with

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 9

a light tomato sauce and basil. The flavors fuse so well together, I promise your mouth will thank you for the welcome break from the overly sweet, spicy, or creamy pastas that are common in many korean-Italian establishments.

All of Chef Gu’s ingredients are fresh and authen-tic. He gets local ingredients from Italy and when he can’t, he uses ingredients from his small garden or his family’s small-town farm. He makes his own salami and prosciutto because he says he can cus-tomize the meat to the types of flavors he has in his dishes, instead of conforming to the tastes of fac-tory-produced meat. Chef Gu has traveled around the world on different occasions in search of the best quality ingredients. One might think he had years of formal training to be a chef, but in fact, he is completely self-taught. He started out studying machinery in school but he had always been inter-ested in cooking due to his parents’ farm. His first experience in cooking was at an Italian restaurant where he became a kind of apprentice to one of the chefs. He read books and researched. In 2008, he traveled to Italy and other countries to search for the perfect tastes and find his flavor profile.

One such flavor that inspired him was the oyster. Currently on the menu now, these oysters are a seasonal appetizer that are sure to convert you if you aren’t a big seafood fan. He was inspired to create this dish while in Italy. He said he grabbed some oysters from the sea, squeezed some lemon on them, and enjoyed with white wine. The oysters at Zione have been dressed up a bit—topped with pomegranate, parsley, and a light lemon vinai-grette. It’s a fresh beginning to any meal.

If you are a fan of dessert, you won’t want to miss out on one of Chef Gu’s delectable options. As he says, dessert is very important. In cooking, it’s the ending. In a sense, it “ties” up a meal. If you’re into a light, sweet taste, try the grape sorbet. It has a tangy edge reminiscent of a wine spritzer. If you like a rich dessert, go for the cheesecake. With a fresh, crumbly graham crust and thick, creamy body of cheese, this one is not to be missed.

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 11

The menu at Zione is small but mighty. Chef Gu has one menu that is constant, and then a chef’s specials menu that changes regularly. He does this to allow for creative freedom and to keep the dishes interesting.Chef Gu is always looking for the best ingredients. In fact, he goes to Italy every two years to see what new local flavors there are to try. Zione also has a special wine selection that changes each week. The prices are highly competitive—a Margherita pizza goes for 15,900 won and pastas start at 11,000 won. for this kind of quality, you won’t find a better deal.

Although Zione only opened in October, it is already clear that Chef Gu knows what he’s doing. With 13 years of experience in owning Little Italia, and a staff who have been working for him for years, he has created a culture of excellence and quality in his busi-ness. Zione is new and exciting now, but Chef Gu is looking towards the long-term. He wants to develop his business slowly and hopes he will have a business that others will want to follow. Well, he is certainly on his way.

The name “Surf & Turf” is well known among the ex-patriate community in korea as it represents a plate of seafood (lobster, prawns, or shrimp) and meat (beef steak or filet mignon) that can be typically eaten throughout the world. However, the korean Peninsula has yet to fully embrace this type of eatery except for at some high-end restaurants. for this reason, a spin on the traditional surf and turf was recently concocted in Daegu with the thought to have a menu of lobster and burgers. The idea of having lobster and ham-burgers in a relaxed atmosphere is unfamiliar to most koreans. “koreans typically associate lobster with a fancy and expensive restaurant,” said Lee Jung-Hyun, co-owner of Surf & Turf, which opened in Daegu this past September. Lee spent a decade falling in love with this type of cuisine while she lived, worked, and studied across the United States. However, homesick-ness led to relocating from New york City back to her hometown of Daegu, where she ran into her childhood friend kim Sang-Hyun. kim had the idea to serve lob-ster rolls, which is a sandwich filled with lobster meat soaked in butter or mayonnaise and served on hot dog shaped bun or a similar roll which has its roots traced to Northeastern North America. With a little help from kim’s sister, a chef in Canada, the restaurant appropri-ately named Surf & Turf was born.

Located less than a 5 minute walk from Geondeulbawi Station (line 3) in Daebong-2 dong, right down the street from the US military installation Camp Henry, Surf & Turf fits nicely into a up and coming neighbor-hood of new restaurants and art galleries. The menu is reasonably priced and features the signature New En-gland Lobster Roll for 16,000 won. The rolls are toasted on the grill and filled to the brim with a healthy portion of lobster. Lee points out that, “All of our lobster comes from Canada and Maine which has the best quality.” In fact, you can order a whole lobster or a small one if you like depending on the current market price. The price for a whole lobster usually runs around 58,000 won and a small one can be had for around 34,000 won.

If the ‘surf’ side of the menu does not tickle your fancy, then you can always go with the tried and true ‘turf’ side. The best seller is the Miami burger with chips for 13,000 won. The burger comes on a moist and soft bun. It is topped with a healthy portion of guacamole and cheese. If you crave the best of both worlds, one should go with the aptly named Surf & Turf burger for 15,000 won. This burger is topped with a handsome amount of lobster that melts in your mouth. All burgers are made with 100 percent Australian beef. for an additional 2,000 won, one can add french fries and coleslaw as a combo for all the main dishes on the menu.

The drink menu has a nice beer selection that sticks to the surf mantra and goes along with the surfboard décor of the restaurant. bottles of Long board Island Lager & big Wave Golden Ale from the kona brewing Company of Hawaii are featured. A few other beach going beers like Guam 1 and Co-rona are also on the menu. If you want to drink on the cheap, korean draft beer is available as well as a variety of canned soft drinks.

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 15

Slowly but surely, Daegu has been following the lead of Seoul and busan with regards to the restaurant busi-ness. Lee and her partner agree that Daegu is a bur-geoning market for foreign food and sees the potential for growth. “We want to bring a new option to Daegu for foreign residents and koreans alike to enjoy.” With plans to expand their menu in the future, it is quite clear that Surf & Turf is a welcome addition to Daegu. Stop by and check it out for yourself!

for anyone who has lived in Daegu for longer than a few months will know that businesses downtown seem to spring up out of nowhere overnight. What was once a major retailer one day is an empty lot the next. One’s favorite restaurant is now a clothing shop and one’s favorite cafe has just become a new favorite pizza parlour. Sometimes it feels like a roll of the dice, when heading downtown and hoping to frequent your favor-ite place for food or coffee.

Well, on an otherwise common street, a quaint little cafe has seem to have sprung up magically among a throng of fashion boutiques and small restaurants. That cafe is Cafe de Nunchi.

Owned by Jon Parsons along with his lovely wife Soh-ee, the two started up the cafe after having gained a long and personal knowledge of coffee making. Having managed his own coffee shop in his native South Afri-ca, Jon spent a number of years living in South korea. Living in Daegu and Seoul, he has paid particular at-tention to the coffee culture in korea and is now taking that knowledge to his craft.

Cafe de Nunchi opened its doors in early October and kicked things off with a special one-day event. “We started off with our 100 mugs event,” Jon explains. The cafe offered the first 100 mugs of their special latte for only 1,000 won each. “We didn’t do 100, but we did about 90.” That’s not bad for a fresh, start-up cafe. Along with Instagram promotions and korea Naver power bloggers popping in for visits, the cafe is off to a roaring start.

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 17

Despite its coffee menu, I found the pastries and desserts to be worth of particular mention. Cafe de Nunchi specializes in what are called dutch pan-cakes or Dutch babies. “About two years ago, we were watching a travel show on Amsterdam and they were doing the dutch pancakes,” Jon says, telling how the idea for Cafe de Nunchi first took shape. “I’ve seen Swiss coffee shops in korea and french, Italian, and Irish, but no Dutch. I’m from South Africa and have some Dutch ancestry. We searched for these Dutch baby pancakes and we couldn’t find them anywhere in korea.” He men-tioned that since then a few places have opened up

http://www.daegucompass.com18 Cafe de Nunchi

that do them. “And,” he quips, “it’s not actually a Dutch pancake. It’s really German.” Either way, it’s delicious and if Cafe de Nunchi is the only place in Daegu spe-cializing in them, we hope that’s well worth your visit.

How about the cafe’s name? Nunchi is a korean word literally meaning “eye measurement” but often used to reference when one is looking out for another or can read a situation really well. Interested in the fact that there is no English equivalent to the word, Jon and his wife decided on it for a cafe name, saying: “It gets people talking.”

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 19

Cafe de Nunchi also offers amazing fridge tarts, fon-dant au Chocolate, the Dutch baby (re-branded as Nunchi baby) and various dessert set combinations as well. Their coffee menu has what you would expect but also a few twists. We liked the inclusion of the Coconut Latte and classic staples like Vanilla Latte, Cream Latte, and Caramel Latte. Price points for Cafe de Nunchi are slightly higher than neighboring cafes, but this is due to the fact that they get their beans from a local, Daegu roaster called Cafe bunker and use their Daegu-roast-ed bunker Coffee beans for brewing. This guarantees a unique, local taste hard to find elsewhere.

The cafe is located just off of cell-phone street at Jung-gu, bongsan Dong 15-3 (중구 봉산동 15-3) and is open daily from noon until 10pm (closed Mondays).find them on facebook: www.facebook.com/cafedenunchiAnd on Instagram: www.instagram.com/cafe.de.nunchi/눈치 카페는 핸드폰골목에서 조금 벗어난 곳에 있으며 주소는 중구 봉산동 15-3이다.

On October third the Daegu Photography Club went to Hahoe Village in Andong for the International Mask festival. We were lucky enough that the second week-end of the festival also fell on the same date as Scott kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk. There are multiple ven-ues throughout Andong that have performances, al-though in my experience the stage at Hahoe Village is the best venue. Hahoe Village sits next to a river and is surrounded by mountains giving a superb background to what are very traditional performances. Having tak-en pictures there last year with Chris Cusick (thelos-tlens.co.uk) I know that performances differ but some of them, the more iconic, performances stay the same. This year we watched three performances; there were more that day but as none of us live in Andong we left before the later performances.

The first performance had four men running around in search of a lord to serve. The rich man who was even-tually found even presided over the marriage of one of own, despite already being married to a korean wom-an. Then you will witness a hard working grandmother slaving over a loom complaining about aches and pains followed by her plea for supplements to her income as she walks around the stage with outstretched hands to the audience.

What seems to be the crowd’s second favorite is the monk and young girl. This monk is attracted to a young girl who he witnesses relieve herself. The rest of the skit is spent with him pursuing the young woman.

Then the crowd favorite is always the drunk man skit. When people think of winter traveling, they think more of ski resorts than going to the ocean or sea. When people think of traveling to Gyeongju, they think more of historical monuments, museums and tombs from the Silla Dynasty’s capital. but there is one place that is worthing checking out all year around.

On the outskirts of Gyeongju to the outskirts of Ul-san are some cliffs along the ocean shore. Those cliffs are called Jusangjeolli (주상절리). Jusangjeolli means columnar joint rock formations. These rocks resemble different fallen pillars and are from volcanic rock formations. The most famous Jusangjeolli is on Jeju-island. but between Gyeongju National Park and Jeongja beach in Ulsan these small set of columnar joint rock formations are also nice to visit.

When I visited there on Halloween Day, it was very chilly due to the ocean breeze but it was still worth the short trip from my home in Gyeongsan. It was about 97 km from my home in Gyeongsan (near yeungnam University) to Gyeongju yangnam (where Jusangjeolli is located) by car via Gyeongbuk Expressway and Na-tional Highway #7. There is about 15 to 20 km where you have to drive up and down a mountain with many curves.

I got there mid-afternoon on Halloween Day. When you first arrived you can see a path, which is called Padosori-gil (파도소리길) which means Sound of Wave Road. This path or small road takes you around and above the cliffs. It is a very nice walk with very nice scenery.

On this path there are places in where you can take the stairs down and get closer to the cliffs and the ocean water. The shore of the ocean is all volcanic rocks (no sand). As you continue on the path, you will see a cable suspended small footbridge that is suspended from one cliff to another cliff with a small drop that the bridge goes over. Like most suspension bridges this bridge does shake making it feel like a little adventure when crossing it.

After we walked across the bridge, we continued our walking on the path to the end of the path which is a deck above the final rock formations which looks similar to a Chinese fan or paper fan.

http://www.daegucompass.com26 Walking Japan’s Nakasendo Trail

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 27

On this deck you can take many pictures of the beautiful scenery in the background and enjoy more of the ocean breeze.

We started our walk back to the entrance of the path when the sun started setting. It was very beautiful. I also heard that when the sun rises in the morning, it is also really beautiful. So if you want to go for an early morning walk or early evening walk, this place is recommended by local residents.

And at the entrance of the path, is a small white lighthouse but too small to go inside. Plus around the area, is of course, sashimi (raw fish) restau-rants, a hotel named, Napoli Hotel (looks more like a motel than hotel though) and small coffee shops including Caffe bene.

So if you have a chance to take the short drive or bus ride down to Gyeongju, I hope you are able to find your way to Jusangjeolli for a nice walk along the ocean side and see these interesting columnar joint rock formations.

On a breezy and warm Saturday, I went with friends to Herb Hillz theme park, which is one stop before Spa Valley in Daegu. There are a variety of buses that take visitors there, being a short 30 minutes away from downtown. There were still construction going on around the area, but we found signs that directed us to the park easily. The admission price was 9000 won for adults.

It was a nice place with an abundance of different themed gardens- my favorite being the “green tea” theme and the “international” garden theme with lots of great photo spots and adorable statues such as the Little Prince. Herb Hillz had a very whimsical feeling to it- almost like a fairytale forest with a gentle stream in the background. Many visitors such as young cou-ples, seniors, and families with children were relaxing and taking a stroll. There were animal statues, forest “rest” areas, bridges and even a mini zoo throughout the park! Though the selection of restaurants was not many, the food was plentiful and very organic and fresh. I had a delicious dish called “flower bibimbap” decorated with real flowers.

Though we didn’t have enough time, I recommend that visitors who are there all day to take part in crafts or cooking classes while there. This is especially catered to families with younger children, but young couples seemed to be enjoying themselves making crafts such as a mini stained glass to chocolate chip cookies.

Though Herb Hillz was very beautiful, the reason I visited and my favorite part was the “eco-adventures” section that is open to people of all ages, as there were 15 courses ranging from easy to difficult. being

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 29

very adventurous, my friends and I chose the “king kong” course, which was 25,000 won. This was the hardest course that involved a self-guided zipline canopy course, where we rock climbed, zip lined, balanced on single steel wires, climbed through webs, and went down mini bungee ump at the end. It was definitely hard and physical exerting, taking us almost 2 hours and out of ten people that started with us, half of the people were still behind us when we were finished. It was definitely a good workout in an exhilarating and breath-taking way, and what I loved most is that there are no workers there for guidance, as everyone was responsible for attaching their own ropes and ziplines.

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 31

I definitely recommend Herb Hillz to people of all ages, as there is a wide variety of activities and sightseeing to do. It is a serene place of beauty, tucked away from the busy streets of downtown and most suitable for visit in the spring or summer. for the adventurous soul, they should have a try at the king kong course and for those that want to relax and explore, there are plenty of beautiful garden views to take in and even quaint little shops to look around in. Herb Hillz is definitely a gem in Daegu, and one of my favorite places within this city. I would definitely visit there again in the future!

If you’ve never been to the Daegu Casino to play pok-er—or if you haven’t been in a while—now is a good time to check it out. The Daegu Casino Poker Room has gone through quite a few changes recently as new manager David Oh started working a couple of months ago. David’s goal is to make the poker room appeal-ing to a wider audience by hosting a variety of Texas Hold’em events and promotions that allow players of different levels to play at different stakes.

The poker room is a particularly friendly part of the ca-sino. The staff speaks English, and all of the dealers are patient and welcoming. Some are more experienced than others; however, the rake (10%) stays on the table until the hand is finished, and the dealers follow strict standard casino rules, so if a mistake happens, it is easily fixed.

As for the players, most are Chinese, Vietnamese, Mongolian, or American. Ages range from early twen-

ties to old as dirt, and people come from a variety of backgrounds. This makes the poker room a great place to meet an interesting people.

What is a typical day like at the poker table? The room opens at 2:00 p.m. every day. Most players buy in for kRW 200,000 to get the daily promotion: If you buy in for kRW 200,000 or more before 2:30, you get an extra kRW 50,000 in chips. The only catch is that you have to play the cash game for at least three hours (although you can leave if you end up losing everything). The blinds are kRW 1,000 and kRW 2,000. Usually, the table fills up (9 players max) within the first hour, and players come and go throughout the afternoon. In the evening, especially on weekends, more players show up, and a second table ends up opening. As long as there are players, the room stays open, and players often stay until the wee hours of the morning.

If kRW 200,000 is too much for your budget, you can of course buy in for less, or you can play in the weekly Sunday tournament (2:00 p.m.). The buy-in for that is just kRW 50,000, and the top five players get paid, with first place receiving kRW 600,000. David is also starting lower-stakes cash tables, where the big blind is only kRW 1,000. And for those who really don’t want to risk

To get to the casino, ask the cab driver to take you to the Inter-burgo Hotel. There are two Inter-burgo Hotels in Daegu, so make sure you tell the driver you are going to Manchon. you can also get there by bus. Many buses will take you to the Mang-woo-dang Park bus stop, which is a three-minute walk away from the hotel.

To get to the poker room, walk straight passed the slot machines. The poker tables will be on your right. Make sure you bring your passport or ARC to get into the ca-sino.

•Written by Cathy Huang Translated by yujeong Lee

With the fast approach to wintertime and the constant reminder of the passing of fall, as leaves are changing color and littering the ground with a wide array of colors, me and friends have constantly been on the lookout for fitting, warm, and stylish winter clothing in downtown Daegu this year. One thing I love the most about downtown Daegu is the convenience of shop-ping, as many boutiques and large clothing stores are clustered together. from doing some fall and winter shopping over the past month, here are some recom-mendations for good stores that can all be found within close proximity to each other in downtown:

1. STyLENANDA : With a wide variety of accessories, shoes, outerwear, formal wear, and its own makeup line- STyLENANDA is very well known among koreans as a chic, trend-set-ting, clothing boutique with a lot of bold pieces. With many stores across korea, I was delighted to find STy-LENANDA on the first floor of the Lotte young Depart-

ment Store in Daegu downtown. They have some truly quality pieces, from warm long trench coats to fuzzy sweaters, and uniquely designed platform shoes and boots. The best thing is that the store color coordinates the clothing, from pastel hues to blacks- it makes for a great shopping experience. They also have a small se-lection of hats, scarfs, and gloves that are both stylish and warm.

2. CHEAPCHIC : This store was one of the first that I visited on our very first day trip to Daegu. The store carries a wide variety of clothing for a very cheap price- mostly ranging from \10.000 for basic sweaters and shirts to around \40.000 for trenchcoats, bomber jackets, and leather jackets. The selling point of this store is that they are always

changing up clothing trends, and different catego-ries of clothing are placed together for convenience of selection. In addition to carrying fall and winter wear, they also have a small selection of clutches and bags for an average of only \10.000.CHEAPCHIC :

3. MIXXO : This store reminds me of forever 21 in North Amer-ica with a little bit of korean styled twist, selling a collection of everything from warm pajamas and socks for the winter on their 2nd floor, to trendy coats and blazers on the first floor. In here, you’ll find many boots, heels, and the 1st floor is also where the “specials” are at, which are displayed in large racks right when you enter the store. The clothing is fashionable and suited for both younger and older women- with nice designs in both causal and formal wear.

4. Lotte young Plaza : This store carries a massive array of winter trench coats, warm scarfs, sweaters, and racks upon racks of parkas and cardigans. Some notable stores are “kISS.CHU” and “Roem” which both sell beautiful, colorful designed clothing at a reasonable price. The entire 2nd floor is dedicated to men and women clothing, dependent on the season. If you get tired of shopping and want a break, a very good dessert café called “billy Angel Cake Co.” is located there- selling everything from rainbow crepes to carrot cakes. The 3rd floor is dedicated to sportswear and causal clothing for both genders. This store, being so close to Daegu Station is very convenient as a

one stop location for every shopping need you have. All the stores constantly have sales as well, so its is easy to hunt for department store quality deals throughout the building!

PoSTParTUM CarE In korEa

A recent style of care has begun to make waves in ko-rea and is slowly gaining traction as a popular option for families. This service, known as Postpartum Care, caters exclusively to women who have just given birth and are seeking help in the recovery process. Although fairly unknown to foreigners, it could become a promi-nent market in korean medical tourism in the future.

In korea, a mother who has just given birth is exempt from any work she used to do before labor such as working, house chores, taking care of the family, etc. The idea is that this will allow her to focus on the baby and her own physical and mental recovery. During this time, all family members help take care of her.

Postpartum care has become increasingly popular in korea since 1996 when the first centers opened. It is believed that a woman’s health after giving birth will af-fect her health for the rest of her life. Delivering a baby is no easy task and the body is drastically changed be-cause of it. The pelvic bone is expanded and all bottom bone structure is dislocated. A woman’s bone density can decrease to 50% in the worst cases. It takes about three months for a woman’s body to get fully recov-ered. In this way, postpartum care offers a new mother the chance to take care of her body, prevents negative after-effects of labor, and minimizes the risk of infec-tion to the mother or baby. This service also eliminates

the “thinking” involved with taking care of oneself and one’s baby after birth—it is all done specially for you by professionals.

Postpartum Care Centers are like hotels for mommies who have just gone through the long and difficult process of having a child.According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, there are 602 postnatal care centers in korea and Daegu is home to 32 of them. Of those 32, one of the best centers in Daegu is located at Hyosung Women’s Hospital near the Daegu bank subway station on the green line. This center is special in that Hyosung specializes in obstetrics and pediat-ricsso both the doctor who helped in delivery, as well as a nurse, provide care to the mother and her new baby. The Daegu Compassrecently visited Hyosung Hospital’s postpartum care center to get all questions answered about postpartum services.

The idea behind these centers is simple—to lift any burden from the new mother. Mothers stay here with their baby for two to three weeks. Nurses and special-ists are available 24/7. All meals are provided that are specific to helping with the mother’s recovery. There are outside specialists who come in to educate the mother in breastfeeding/scheduling, pelvic massages, and yoga. There are spa services as well as outside

DAEGU COMPASS DECEMBER 2015 43

exercise time too. babies are taken care of by nurs-es around the clock. Each mother has her own room to stay in outfitted with a bathroom, bed, and TV. In some cases, she can opt to have a larger room with a table and chairs and a reclining chair. There is a housekeeper who cleans regularly. It is exactly reminiscent of staying in a high-end hotel room.

Another great perk to Hyosung is its three English coordinators. If you are a foreigner seeking post-partum care, one of these excellent translators will be the liaison between you and the doctor. Most cases in which foreigners are using these services are women who are not korean but have korean husbands. It is also common in families in the U.S. military, as well as Chinese, Russian, and Japanese patients who have researched this style of treat-ment and are interested in using it. It is especially becoming popular within China and so many people come to see how the centers operate in order to open their own back home.

foreigners who enjoy postpartum care centers are most interested in the breastfeeding aspects of care. They do not want to feed their babies powdered for-mula as they believe breastfeeding is important to establishing a baby’s personality. Also, giving birth in western societies is very expensive and this is a more affordable option. However, the biggest reason why foreigners desire this service might be due to the nurs-es. Most nurses at these centers have worked there for ten or more years. They know what mothers want and they want to impress mothers with their care. for this reason, postpartum care is highly attractive to ko-reans and foreigners alike.

In Daegu, an average room at these centers can cost around 2,000,000 won for the whole stay. for a premium room, the cost is around 3,000,000 won. Although it is not cheap, patients can receive quality service and the comfort of knowing they are in good hands.

In some countries, there is little or no time allowed off from work after giving birth. This adds incredible amounts of stress to a new mother’s life, not to mention

she is busy taking care of her newborn baby. In korea, these centers allow women the chance to recuperate as well as have confidence their baby is receiving the care it needs to be healthy. This is a crucial aspect to postpartum care. After all, our health and our families’ health is one of the most essential aspects to a happy life.

This article is the last one of 2015 on Daegu medical tourism. Daegu, EXCO, and the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee haveworked to promote and market activities related to MICE industry to educate about quality medical service in Daegu. Also they pub-lished a helpful medical tourism guide book in six dif-ferent languages to provide useful information. be on the lookout in the future for more information from the Daegu Medical Tourism group and all that they provide. Thank you.

gajokGajok means 'family' in korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. but it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right?
