When I was a child and would hear adults say things like this I really couldn’t understand why. But now that I have a few years on me, I truly get it. Congregation: We do not presume to come to your table trusting in our own goodness, but in your all-embracing love and mercy.

Leader: Teach us to love as we are loved by you, to forgive as you have forgiven us, and to give in sacrifice as you sacrificed yourself for us.

All: You have so made us that we cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from your mouth. Give us a hunger for your Word, and in that food satisfy our daily need and make us truly the body of Christ.
