Introduction

On the Developing Teacher course you will be exposed to a wide range of new ideas and techniques for the classroom which are beyond the scope of an introductory TEFL course. You will be encouraged to experiment with these new ideas and put them into practice yourself. This course is the ‘Developing Teacher’ course so we will work on the premise that you are working as a teacher. Even if you just have one private class per week initially, this counts as working as a teacher! You should take the ideas presented on this course, try them out with your students and report back on the results to your classmates. Some of the methodologies presented on the course have been tried and tested for years and others are relatively new which have yet to be fully evaluated and adopted by the wider EFL teaching community. Each methodology is distinct and may be better suited to different types of teachers. They may put you out your comfort zone but the more you experiment and reflect the more you will learn about yourself as a teacher.

Expected workload

● Attend class at the school once a week to get input on new ideas, methodologies and

techniques ● Teach a lesson, incorporating what you have learned from the input session and

adapting it to your regular class ● Prepare a weekly, 5min presentation to be given to your fellow classmates,

discussing the methodology / technique, how easy / difficult it was to incorporate and the response from your students

● Maintain a weekly blog about your experiences ● Maintain a portfolio of new activities and lessons ● Attend extra-curricular workshops ● End of course essay

Course aims

The course aims to:

● provide trainees with in-depth knowledge of teaching methodologies ● improve trainees’ ability to reflect on their teaching practice ● improve trainees’ knowledge of English grammar and language analysis ● enable trainees to innovate in the classroom ● allow trainees to develop professionally ● give trainees the skills to research their subject
