Welcome to what i know will be another wonderful rSno Season in dundee. We’ve been working for over three years on its creation and i am very proud of the world-class soloists and conductors who will be sharing their music with us.

The Season opens with leonard Bernstein’s Candide overture, from an opera which has as its optimistic motto, “The Best of all Possible Worlds”. Well, this Season we are truly bringing you the very best, including well-known works by some of the great masters – Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, Weber, Shostakovich and Mozart.

a particular highlight for me will be in February 2010, when i will conduct respighi’s spectacular Pines of Rome for the first time in the magnificent acoustics of the Caird Hall. i am delighted that the internationally-acclaimed russian pianist nikolai lugansky will be performing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with us at this concert. it promises to be a very special evening!

another russian will join us this Season, Yakov Kreizberg, who is in demand with leading orchestras throughout the world. He will conduct the orchestra in a programme that includes Shostakovich’s eleventh Symphony, which i know is a real favourite with the rSno’s loyal audience.

So let us enjoy, together, the best of what is possible, entering a world where the only boundary is our own imagination!

Chaleureusement,

Stéphane DenèverSno Music director

The Best of all Possible WorldsThUrsDay 8 OcTObEr 2009: 7.30pmThe first half features two composers whose musical styles seemed half in earnest, half in jest. Pastiche fuses brilliantly with heartfelt melody in both Bernstein’s Candide and Strauss’ Concerto. Brahms’ First Symphony provides contrast, as it moves from its dark openings via heroic struggles through to its triumphant end.

Shostakovich’s eleventh recalls the events of the 1905 russian revolution. Written four years after the death of Stalin, the work was an overnight success and redeemed the composer’s standing with the russian authorities. Yakov Kreizberg has been praised for his interpretation of the work, which he has conducted with many of the world’s leading orchestras.

During the 09:10 Season the RSNO annual appeal will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the RSNO junior Chorus.

For 30 years the rSno Junior Chorus has been a beloved part of Scotland’s musical life, creating unforgettable musical memories for thousands of children, and providing them with the priceless opportunity to work alongside one of europe’s finest orchestras.

Generations have already benefited from the expert training and experience of performance and recording that being a member of the rSno Junior Chorus provides. every Monday evening the rSno Centre is a hive of activity as over 250 children make music together, growing audibly in confidence and skill as the weeks go by. Whatever else they go on to do in their lives, they will always have music.

THE GIFT OF SINGING

Many people these days opt to donate back to the rSno some of the great savings they make through being a subscriber. in this special anniversary year you can help us to bring the gift of singing to future generations of Scottish children. Please make a donation as we seek to expand and enrich the opportunities we provide for the rSno Junior Chorus.
