感嘆詞としての as if の語法＊

1．はじめに

本稿では、以下のような先行する発話内容を否定し、話し手の非難・当惑・疑念を表す感嘆詞としての as if の語法を調査する。

（1）a. ‘Did you get a pay raise?’ ‘As if!’ （CALD4）（「給料はあがったの？」「まさか！」）

b. He asked me if I’d go out with him. As if! （LDOCE6）（彼にデートを誘われたの。ありえないから！）

この表現は一般に、1980 年代から 90 年代にかけてビバリーヒルズ近郊に住む 10 代の若者の間で用いられ、Alicia Silverstone 主演の映画Clueless（1995 年）1 で一躍有名になったといわれている（Dunn 1995、タニクリフ 2013）が、言語学の文献で取り扱われたことがほとんどない。そこで、2 節ではまず、関連構文との比較から感嘆詞としての as if の特異性を指摘する。次に、語法書やイディオム辞典など、各種の辞典の記述を確認し、感嘆詞としての as if の統語的・意味的特徴を考察する。4 節では、様々なコーパスやデータベースを調査し、この表現がいつからどのような状況で使われるようになったかを検証する。

2．as if の特異性

従属接続詞の as if は（2）のように比較や様態を表す副詞節を導くか、（3）のように look や sound などの感覚動詞の後で補文節を導くのが一般的である。

b. His voice sounded as if he would like to laugh. （L. M. Montgomery, Ann of Windy Poplars）

また、as if 節には、以下のように、It isn’t as if/ It’s not as if … の形式で、as if に続く内容節を否定する一種の強意的表現がある。

（4）a. Mom is close to tears. She knows I’ve got to go. It’s not as if I haven’t been planning this for years.

haven’t been getting my own lunch for the last umpteen years. It’s not as if I were asking you to do that.”

さらに、この構文から主節が省略され単独で用いられる独立文としての用法がある2。この種の as if 独立文は、It’s not/ It isn’t as if 構文同様、反語的に話し手の強い感情を表し , 文字通りの意味とは逆の意味を含意するのが特徴的である。

（5a）ではベリル・フェアフィールドのことを覚えているか尋ねれ、「私がベリルのことを忘れているような言い方ね」ということは、「忘れているはずはない」という反対の意味を含意する。そのことは後続する発言で過去の記憶を思い出していることからもわかる。（5b）では、ドルー家に生まれた 9 番目の赤ちゃんについて、「すでにこの世にでているドルー家の人では足りないかのように」とは「もう十分足りている」ということを含意している。

本稿で取り上げる as if は（6）のように、形態的には as if に続く内容節を欠き、従属接続詞が単独で用いられており、（5）のような as if

独立文と同様、as if が条件を表わさないという点で独特な談話表現であるといえる3, 4。

（6） Finally, she began to see billboards. They urged her to eat at Tony’s home of three-time world champion award-winning clam chowder. Or take a swamp ride. As if! Or stay at a motel called the Silver Sands, which boasted forty-two modern rooms, air conditioning, tile baths, and free television. （COCA : FIC 2015）

3．語法書と辞書の記述

この節では、語法書、イディオム辞典、表現辞典、スラング辞典などで、感嘆詞としての as if がどのように記述されているかを検討する。

3.1　Manser （1983）

まず、英語構文や表現について網羅的な記述をしている Jespersen, Poutsma, Curme など伝統文法家たちの文法書にはこの表現の用例や解説は見られない。感嘆詞としての as if と深い関連性があると思われるas if 独立文と it’s not as if 構文については、Partridge （1957）、Fowler

（1965）、Wood （1969）が簡単に言及しているが、感嘆詞の用法については一切触れていない。

筆者の調査によると、80 年代になって Manser （1983）が話し手の非難・疑惑・疑念を表す as if 独立文とともに感嘆詞としての用法について初めて言及し、以下の例を挙げながら「（as if が）単独で用いられ、信じられないこと、まさかという気持ちを表す」（p.9）とコメントして

いる。

3.2　各種辞典の記述

まず、以下の学習辞典、スラング辞典、イディオム辞典における感嘆詞としての as if に関する記述と用例を見てみよう。

（8） informal: said to show that you do not believe something is possible: ‘Did you get a pay raise?’ ‘As if!’ （CALD4）

（9） The phrase as if is sometimes used informally as an interjection to say that something suggested or claimed is impossible or very unlikely.: “He thinks you like him.” “As if!” ［= I don’t like him at all; there is no chance that I would like him.］ （MWALED2）

（10） spoken informal: He asked if I’d go out with him. As if （= it is extremely unlikely that I would go out with him）! （LDOCE6）

（11） an exclamation : an expression said when someone says something is not true. . . .perhaps usually, sarcastic: My hair

should look like a pile of wet thatch? As if!

（American Slang Dictionary）（12） SPOKEN said when you think something someone has just said

is very stupid or very unlikely to be true: ‘Maybe if you told

Janine you didn’t mean what you said, she’d forgive you.” “Yeah, as

if!”｜“I know he’s weird, but his party might still be good.” “Right, as

if!” （Longman Idioms Dictionary）

これらの記述から、感嘆詞的用法の as if はくだけた話し言葉で用いられ、全体的に皮肉な表現であることがわかる。（8）と（9）の用例から

は、相手の発言を受けて、「まさか」、「信じられない」、「そんなバカな」、「ありえない」、「冗談じゃない」といった意味合いの強い疑いを表すことがわかる。（10）と（11）からは、話し手の発言の直後に付加されて、反語的に用いられて、「絶対にしない」、「ありえない」、「だからどうしたというのだ」、「どうでもいい」といった話し手の反発を表していることがわかる。（12）の例文の前には yeah と right がついているが、これは as if の感嘆詞的用法に関連する yeah right が 2 つに分かれて as if の意味を強めている点で興味深い5。

これらの例はすべて話し手の強い感情を表し否定の意味を強めているため、感嘆符がついていることがわかる。この点に関してベルトン

（2008：73）は、提案されたことをきっぱりと拒絶するときに用いられる as if はスラング（俗語）表現で、「文末には必ずエクスクラメーションマーク（！）がつき、若い人たちに人気のフレーズ」であると述べているが、実際の用例をあたってみると必ずしも感嘆符がつくとは限らないことがわかる。以下の例を見てみよう。

（13） Brown initially said it’s Warren who should apologize for claiming to be a person of color. As if. But later, his office issued a statement taking the staff members to task.

（COCA : SPOK 2012）（14） These phrases from hell are histor y . I ’ll be their worst

nightmare. Yeah, right. As if. Hel-lo-oh! #Every day, Americans are belting out more of these ready-made, media-marinated catchphrases, usually of the in-your-face （to use another） variety. （TIME 1996/12/16）

（15） It was meant for the elderly and she dreaded being counted amongst that number now that she was old enough to qualify for Saga holidays and lunch clubs in church halls, old enough to wear beige anoraks and pull-on ‘slacks’. （As if.） She was old enough to move into Fanning Court. God forbid.

（13）と（14）はコーパスからの例であり、（15）は小説の例である。筆

者が行った COCA の調査では、感嘆詞としての as if 51 例中 39 例に感嘆符は付いていなかった。ただし、コーパスでは話し言葉やニュースを筆記する際に明確な規定はなく、筆記者の裁量に委ねられることも関係しているように思われる。また、同 51 例中 FICTION の例が 29 例あり、そのうち 23 例に感嘆符がついていなかった。いずれにしても、感嘆詞としての as if の用法は、（15）で示されているように、小説中の語り手の内的独白を表す場合に多用されることがわかる。

3.3　省略された語句

感嘆詞としての as if は後に続く内容節を欠く従属接続詞のみからなる究極の間投詞的表現であるが、as if のあとに省略された語句を復元することは可能だろうか。Spears （2012）は‘What make you think I could possibly care?; I don’t care at all!’を意味する Like I care! と As if! を同義と扱い以下の例をあげており、As if! は As if I cared! を略したものとみなしている7。

また、Oxford Idioms Dictionary for Learners of English は以下の文脈では I would が省略されたものとみなしている。

（17）‘Don’t tell Tom I said that, will you?’ ‘Oh, as if (I would)!’

タニクリフ（2013: 11）はもう少し詳しく言葉を補い、“as if I would ever do a thing like that”（まさか私がそのようなことをするなんてありえない）としている。また、Dunn （2005: 11） は、間投詞的用法の as if は “as if it were true”が短縮した形と述べている。どれも先行する発言を考えると可能な復元の形といえるかもしれないが、コーパスを調べてもそれぞれ数例しか見当たらない。相手の発言によって（または話し手自身の先行する発話によって）話し手の反応が微妙に変わるため、復元された形を一律に決定することは困難であるように思われる。

4．as if の感嘆詞用法はいつ出現したか

1980 年代の初頭、ロサンゼルス郊外の San Fernando Valley の高級住宅街に住み流行の最先端をいく十代の女の子たちを指して Valley girl ということばが生まれ、彼女たちの特有のことば遣いや話し方やファッションがアメリカの若者文化の象徴となった（cf. Hinton et al. 1987）。感嘆詞としての as if は彼女たちが使った表現の一つと言われ、ジェーン・オースティン（Jane Austen）の小説『エマ』（Emma）を現代風に作り直した 1995 年の青春コメディー映画『クルーレス』（Clueless）で使われ有名になったといわれている8。実際、コーパスを検索してみると Valley Girl Talk やこの映画に関した as if の例がたくさん出てくる。

（18） Editor -- Dude! I’m, like, from the Valley, ya no, and if those dweebs in the suits would, like, classify my Valleyspeak as bio-lingual, well, then, fer sure I could get totally tubular grades, two. As if! （COCA : NEWS 1996）

（19） “Clueless” appears to be a blockbuster hit, boosted by spunky performances and a hilarious screenplay. #Lending a touch of irony to its success is the fact that filmmaker Amy Heckerling borrowed her basic plot - about a teenager who fancies herself more sophisticated than the younger girl she takes under her wing - from Jane Austen’s great novel “Emma,” dating from 1816. While there’s little trace of Austen’s elegant style in the volleys of “y’know” and “as if!” that pour from the film’s Valley Girl-type characters, their Los Angeles high school amusingly fits the author’s description of a learning institution. . .

（18）は The San Francisco Chronicle の編集長に寄せられた投書の例で、（19） は映画 Clueless についての The Christian Science Monitor の記事である。また、この映画の主人公を演じた女優の伝記的書籍のタイトルAs if! The Not So Clueless Alicia Silverstone （Rich 1997）にも as if が使われている。

ビ番組 Saturday Night Live の中で 1989 年に始まった寸劇 Wayne’s World

まで遡るとも言われている。Wayne’s World はその後 1992 年と 1993 年に映画化され、1992 年の Wayne を演じた Mike Myers と Garth を演じた Dana Carvey が as if! を使ったことで広く知れ渡るようになったという9, 10。

このように 80 年代後半まで感嘆詞の as if をたどっていくことができるが、3 節で見たように Manser が 1983 年のイディオム集で記述していることから、80 年代前半にはこの表現が使われていたことがわかる。Dalzell and Victor （2006: 47―48）は、as if! が話し手の懐疑的な態度を表すユーモラスな表現でありアメリカ語法であると述べ、6 例を挙げている。その内訳は、2003 年、2001 年、1999 年のアメリカの小説からの 3例、1995 年の Clueless と 1992 年の Wayne’s World からそれぞれ 1 例ずつの 2 例。6 番目は、1981 年に Connie Eble が編集したノースカロライナ大学チャペルヒル校のスラング集の名前のみあがっており、具体例は明記されていない。そこで、Eble （1996, 1981）にあたってみると、1972 年から 1993 年にわたる同校のスラング調査の中で記録された感嘆詞の as if の以下の例があがっていた。これにより 1980 年代初頭にはすでにアメリカの大学生のスラングとして使われていたことがわかる。

（20）‘He drank 50 beers in 5 minutes.’ ‘As if.’

なお、Eble の一連の調査を受けて、Pamera Munro が UCLA で行ったスラング・プロジェクトをまとめた Munro （1991）を点検したが、強意表現の as if についてはリストされていなかった。90 年代になるまでその使用はかなり限定的であり散発的であったように思われる。

次に、さらに古い用例を求めて OED3 の感嘆詞の as if を調べたところ、5 例が確認できた。2001 の新聞記事、1994 年の Clueless からの用例、

（20）であげたノースカロライナ大学のスラング集に掲載された 1981 年の 例、1975 年 の Alex Buzo の 劇 の 脚 本 か ら の 例、1903 年 の Frank Norris の小説からの例である。最後の 2 例を以下にあげる。

（21） Why doesn’t Tom forgive and forget?.. Huh! As if! That kind of magnanimity’s an unknown concept as far as you’re concerned.

（21）と（22）は両方とも（厳密な意味では、小説や脚本という）書き言葉であるが、会話の部分からの用例となっているところが興味深い。Norris の小説に関しては実物にあたり、（22）のセリフの前後をもう少し丁寧に見てみると以下のようになっていた。

（23） “Better wait, hadn’t you, Laura,” said Aunt Wess, “and see. Maybe he’ll come up and speak to us.” “Oh, as if!” contradicted Laura. “He don’t know us, - Just as Page says. And if he did, he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t think it polite.” （F. Norris, The Pit, p.10）

as if に続く台詞に“He don’t know us, …”とあり、20 世紀初頭の用例でありながら、かなりくだけた文脈で as if が使われていることが理解できる。

OED3 が挙げている用例により 1903 年まで遡ることができたが、1903 年から 1975 年の間の用例や 1903 年以前の用例は、章末にあげた各種コーパスやデータベースの調査では見つけることができなかった11。今回の調査では、以下の劇の台本からの用例が一番古いもの（1990 年）となった12。

5．結び

本稿ではこれまで学問的関心が払われてこなかった感嘆詞としてのas if の語法を取り上げ、各種の辞典の記述を確認したあと、強意表現としての as if が英語の歴史上、いつ登場したかを検証した。その結果、一般に 1990 年代の映画 Wayne’s World（1992 年）や Clueless（1995 年）

で一般に広まったといわれているが、コーパスや OED3 の用例検索から20 世紀初頭にはすでに使用されていたことが明らかになった。とはいえ、今回の筆者の調査からは、80 年代以前に実際に用いられた用例を見つけることはできなかった。まだ断定的なことは言えないが、20 世紀初頭にこの用法がくだけた話し言葉で登場した後、長い休眠状態を経て 1970 年代中頃から 80 年代初頭にかけて再び使わるようになったが、その使用は散発的であり、80 年代末期のテレビ番組や 90 年代の映画をきっかけに息を吹き返し現在に至っているものと考えられる。今後も引き続き調査を行い、1903 年以前に使われていたのか、また、1903 年から 1975 年までの空白の時代に使われていたのか検証したい。

感嘆詞の as if に関連する表現として、Not!、Yeah, right!、No way!、Whatever! などがある。間投詞の Not! は先行する発言のあとにポーズを置いて、先行文よりやや高めのピッチで発音されるものであり、先行文の極性を逆にするという意味で as if と重なるところが多い。Yeah, right! も皮肉の意味合いを持ち、話し手の強い疑いを表す感嘆詞として使用される点で、as if と関連が深いといえる。

（25） Of course I’m going to pay $100 a ticket to see a rock concert. Not! （Spears 2006: 244）

（26） Yeah, right! You were just going through my desk looking for a pencil. （Spears 2006: 406）

特に Not! の使用は Wayne’s World で広く知られるになった点と 20 世紀初頭にすでに使用されていることが確認されている点で as if との共通点が多い（Sheidlower and Lighter 1993, Dunn 2005）。そのため、これらの談話表現の用法や歴史的発達を調査し、as if との関連性を明らかにする必要がある。

2 　（3） は 2 例とも as if 独立文が否定を含意する感嘆文として機能している例であるが、井上（2016）で指摘されているように、as if 独立文には感嘆を表さず、客観的で描写的な表現としての用法もある。以下の例を参照のこと。（i） Janine said: May I sit down? As if it has all been too much for her. She

had something to trade at last, for a token at least. （M. Atwood, The Handmade Tale）

ことも可能であるが、仮定法過去を使った As if I cared! の方が好まれると論じている。しかしながら、コーパスを使用した調査でもインフォーマント調査でも、2 つの表現は現代英語ではほぼ等価とみなされる。

8 　映画 Clueless を調査したところ、As if! は 6 回使用されていた。まず、主人公の Cher が登校時に男子生徒に言い寄られて“Ooh! Get off of me! As if!”という場面で。2 回目は Cher がディベートの先生 Mr. Hall に成績の交渉に行き、敢え無く断れた際に独り言をいうシーンで。3 回目は親友の Dionne と転校生の Tai に高校の構内を案内しているときに Cher が Tai から「あなたの彼氏はどこ？」と尋ねられて「高校の男子に興味はない」という際に。4 回目はパーティーの場面で、昨日 Cherが着ていた服を盗んで着ているクラスメートのAmber に気づき、Cher が Amber に向って苦情を述べた際、Amber が“As if... I’d wear a dress from Judy’s.”（このブランドのファンなのよ）と返答するシーンで。5 回目はパーティーの後 Elton の車の中で彼から “What’s the deal, you’ve been flirting with me all year.（「なんだよ　いつも僕に気のあるフリをして」）と言われて、Cher が “As if! I’ve been trying to help you and Tai get together.”（「タイといっしょになってほしいだけよ」）と返答する場面で。最後は、ラストの Mr. Hall と Ms. Toby Geist の結婚式の場面で。一瞬 Cher と

Josh の結婚式と思わせる場面の直後に“As if! I’m only 16! This is California, not Kentucky.”という台詞で登場する。As if! に対応する日本語字幕は、それぞれ、「サイテー！」、「超バッド！」、「やめて！」、「まさか！」、「まさか！」、

（Benjamin なんかに）なびくものか」）と言い返す場面で。2 回目は最後の地下室のシーンで。Wayne が Cassandra にふられたうえ、自分の家も燃えてしまうという最悪のシナリオを空想した直後で。as if は両方とも日本語字幕には訳されていなかった。

11　アメリカ方言学会のメーリングリストに Ken Miller 氏が 1999 年 8 月 16 日に 投 稿 し た メ ッ セ ー ジ（http://listserv.linguist.org/pipermail/ads-1/1999-August/0001437.html）では、Salman Rushdie が 1999 年に発表した小説に出ていた as if について言及している。小説の舞台は 1940 年代中頃のボンベイで、以下の語り手の母親が砂の城を作る場面での例である。（i） “Skyscraper,” she named it. “How’d you like to own a penthouse at the

top?”Skywhatter? Where was a penthouse pent? These were words I did not know. I found myself disliking them: the words, and the building to which they belonged. Besides, I was bored and wanted to swim.

“Looks like a big matchbox to me.” I shrugged. “Live in it? As if.” （S. Rushdie, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, London: Vintage Books）

Miller 氏はこの例の as if の使用は時代錯誤の感があるとコメントしている。12　国内で出版されたスラング辞典（『サラリと言えると格好いいスラングな英

語』（ディビッド・A・セイン・岡悦子、2009 年、河出書房新社）、『アメリカ人ならだれでも知っているフレーズ 4000』（山田詩津夫（著）David Thayne

（監修）、2005 年、小学館）、『ネイティブが教える役立つ英語のスラング』（平岡肇・シンディー・ドミニク、1999 年、創育）、『アフリカン・アメリカンスラング辞典』（泉山真奈美、1997 年、研究社）、『情況・場面別　最新米スラング小辞典』（Alan P. Watwood、1995 年、秀文インターナショナル）、『ネイティブがよく使うスラング表現 700』（ピーター・チェ、1995 年、明日香出版社）、
