COURSE ASSIGNMENTS (Email: [email protected])

Please visit https://timotai.co/DVje and read “How to Submit Assignments” for

instruction.

1. Pre-Course Assignments (40% of the course grade):

(Required of all credit and certificate students)

a. (10%, Due September 30, 2017) Read the book of Joshua through in its entirety, in a modern Chinese translation. You should do this in one sitting, with no

interruptions and no note-taking. When you have completed this reading, you

should write down the following:

(1) Your reactions to the exercise of reading a book at one sitting. Was this the

first time you have done this for a large book of the Old Testament? How did

the exercise feel to you? What benefits can you see from such an exercise?

(200-300 words) (中文 400 – 600 字)

(2) Things that you noticed this time in your reading of Joshua that you had never

noticed before. (200-300 words) (中文 400 – 600 字)

(3) At least six questions from the book that you would like to have discussed in

class.

b. (10%, Due September 30, 2017) Make an outline of the book of Joshua

according to the directions at the end of the syllabus. This is to be your own

original outline; it should not simply copy from any commentary or Bible to

which you have access. When you have completed it, we will discuss this

outlining exercise in class.

c. Other Reading: (1) Read all the assigned sections of the Coleson and Howard commentaries. For

each reading (one from Coleson and five from Howard), write a one-page

essay (200-250 words for each reading) (中文 400-500 字)highlighting at

least two ideas arising from the reading that you think is especially helpful,

especially troubling, or simply something you were interested to learn.

a) (5%, Due Oct 10, 2017) Coleson, “Introduction to Joshua,” pp. 3-36 (科

尔森的约书亚记导言,第 27-69 页)

b) (10%, Due Nov 20, 2017) Howard’s five articles:

1) “Introduction to the Book of Joshua”

2) “Joshua 1:8 and Prospering and Succeeding in the Old Testament”

3) “On the Ethics of Rahab's Lie”

4) "‘Devoted Things’ and the Destruction of the Canaanites” (Due Nov

20, 2017)

5) “Patterns in the Tribal Lists”

TTi 课程介绍 Course Syllabus: 约书亚记 Book of Joshua | 第 5 / 9 页

(2) (5%, Due Dec 1, 2017) Read “The Student, the Fish, and Agassiz,” and write

a 200-300 word (中文 400-600字)reaction paper to this story. What

things caught your attention? How do the points in this essay relate to our

reading of the Bible?

d. Webinars: Required of all credit students. Absence or tardiness for more than 5 minutes in any one webinar will result in the dropping of one step of the

course grade (e.g. from A to A-).

Webinar #1: 2017.10.10 (Tue) 8-9:30pm (Beijing Time)

Webinar #2: 2017.11.7 (Tue) 8-9:30pm (Beijing Time)

Please visit https://timotai.co/DVje and read “How to Attend a Webinar” for

instruction.

2. Post-Course Assignment (60% of the course grade)

a. (20%, Due March 15, 2018) Preach a Sermon.

(Required of all credit and certificate students)

Choose a text or pick a theme in Joshua to preach a sermon. Date of preaching should be set and submitted by Dec 30, 2017.

Turn in a complete manuscript of your sermon (ca. 2000 words or 4000 中文

字) with three sermon critiques. (One of these needs be a self-critique.)

Sermon submitted without the required critiques will be deducted one step of a grade (e.g. from A to A-) for EACH missing critique/evaluation.

b. (40%, Due March 15, 2018) Essay (Required of all credit students)

Write a 4000-5000 word essay on a key theological concept (or “theme”) in the

book of Joshua that relates especially to ministry. NOTE: You should consult

with the professor during the week of classes and get his approval of your

topic. This essay should consist of two parts:

(1) [30%] Your own work on this topic (3000-4000 words, 中文 6000-8000 字). Use the Bible as your only source in this section, i.e., do not consult any

commentaries or other outside resources. Here you should clearly state what

this theme is in a short paragraph, and then develop and support it throughout

the rest of this section, making sure to give chapter and verse references in

support for your major points. Your grade will be based on the quality of the

exposition of the meaning of the text and also the quality of your application

of that meaning to your church or Bible study group.

(2) [10%] Support for your work in (a) from the Coleson and Howard

commentaries, as well as any other outside resources available to you. Here

you are not to begin a new exposition, but rather simply show how these

outside resources support and add to what you yourself discovered in your

work in (a). Be sure to properly cite whatever outside sources you use

(including page numbers).

Pre-Course Outline Assignment: Joshua Outline

SPECIAL NOTE: You may NOT use any outside helps of any type—commentaries,

study Bible notes, Internet resources, etc.—on this assignment. Please read each

question carefully and do your own work.

Worksheet objectives:

(1) To introduce students to holistic analysis of a book at the “macro-level” of context

(2) To foster thematic analysis based on such holistic analysis

(3) To explore the significant theme of inheritance in this key book

1. Read the entire book of Joshua in one sitting.

2. Outline the book of Joshua, using Israel’s inheritance as the basis for each portion of your

outline (i.e., in each heading and subheading). That is, some form of the word inheritance [or

inherit, inherits, etc.] must appear in every point in your outline. Be sure to incorporate

inclusive chapter and verse numbers for every entry (e.g., “Caleb’s Inheritance [14:6-15]”).

Please make your outline fairly detailed, within the following guidelines:

Do not go beyond the second level of outlining (i.e., I.A…B…C…D…II.A…B…C..., etc.)

On the first level, units should be no larger than 10 chapters

On the second level, units should be no larger than one chapter

NOTE: For an example of how to do this, see the book of Judges outline (below),

which uses some form of the word apostasy in all first- and second-level headings.

Note also the method of including chapter and verse numbers in every heading. (12

pts)

2. Given your work in # 1, what would you propose as the theme of the book of Joshua?

Formulate this in one well-worded sentence. Explain your statement of theme in 50-100

words, supporting it with the work you’ve done in your outlining. (3 pts)

3. How might you handle the book of Joshua in a 13-week series? Target it to one of the

following contexts: a Sunday teaching class, a Bible study group, a preaching series, a youth

group, or some other context that you work in. Indicate your intended target group, and

include a tentative 13-week outline, with themes for each lesson. Be sure to include the

Scriptural passage(s) for each one. (5 pts)

(20 pts correspond to 10% of the course grade.)
