Local screenwriterchosen for global TVconference

BEN Johnson is a screenwriter from Matatiele. He completed his training through the NFVF’s Sed-

iba Spark Screenwriters Programme in 2013.He has since completed several short-film scripts,

one of which was bought by Noble Pictures in Johan-nesburg and is being rewritten for M-Net.

His feature film script, Calabash Diplomat, wasawarded development funding by the KZN Film Com-mission and will be developed for the big screen.

He was recently selected by The Writers Guild ofSouth Africa, in partnership with the Department of

Trade and Industry, as one of 20 South African screen-writers who will travel to the National Association ofTelevision Program Executives (NATPE) conference inPrague in June.

NATPE includes networks like Fox and HBO and isthe foremost global market for TV and digital con-tent.

Buyers and sellers negotiate the sale of fresh tele-vision series and films through pre-established meet-ings and expo stands.

There are workshops with international televisionpersonalities like Jay Leno and Eva Longoria.

The South African writer-delegates’ network withexecutives from all over the world in an effort to selltheir scripts and ideas. To be selected, writers wereinvited to submit their projects, these were then scru-tinised by a panel of industry professionals.

The strongest 20 projects and writers were select-ed to apply to DTI for sponsorship. Those whose appli-cations were approved were granted funding for thetrip.

NATPE represents a unique opportunity for SouthAfrican writers to be exposed to international playersin a global market and to learn first-hand about thetrends in television.

“It’s a tremendous privilege for me as an individualand for my region. I look forward to learning and grow-ing and bringing that knowledge back to enrich ourlocal industry. Selling a film or series internationallyis one of my goals for this year and accomplishing itwould be just awesome,” said Johnson when askedabout being chosen for the conference.

Statue removal won’t create jobsIWAS in Cape Town recently and couldn’t stopwonderingwhat leaf those students at theUni-versity of Cape Town are on.

Their reasoning is that the statue of CecilRhodes should be removed from their campusbecauseitrepresentsourcolonialpastandper-petuates apartheid.

Well, thecouncilat theUCThassincecapitu-latedtotheirpressure.I’mquitecertainthatthecouncil took their decision just to maintainpeace in the university, good decision, silencethevandals.Whatisfunnyaboutthisreasoningof theirs (the students’) is that the entire city ofCapeTown,itsfoundation,isbuiltonourmuch-hated colonial past, so are all our cities.

Since it’s Let-Us-Destroy-Our-Past Season, will these people uproot the entire city of CapeTown. Don’t laugh at me. I’m trying to followtheir logic.

Todrivemypoint through,we inheritedEs-kom from our previous government. HowaboutwedestroyEskombecause it remindsusof our colonial past and apartheid?

Symbolism is important in politics, but Idoubt destroying statues will create employ-mentforthemasses.If theircall is“transforma-tion,”therearebetterwaysofattainingthat,re-sorting to barbarism isn’t one of them.

Rhodes,Shaka,Ghandi, partof our historyIWASsickenedasIwatchedourpres-ident giggling inanely while Mugabeinsulted South African history in theperson of Cecil John Rhodes. Icouldn’thelpwonderingwhatNelsonMandelawouldhavemadeofhisper-formance. I am sure that theMadiba, who persuaded a people with a frac-tured and wounded past, to put it allbehind them and build a country to-gether would have beenmore than alittle disappointed.

Likemanygreat characters inhis-tory (Shaka, andGhandi)Rhodeswascertainly no angel. But he achieved alot for South Africa and Zimbabwe -and left a legacy that all colours andgendersarebenefitingfromtoday.Hewas a man of his time as was Shaka,Ghandi and Churchill.

What will history say Zuma andMugabe achieved for their people? Ithas been documented that duringMugabe’s“reign”inZimbabwe,thou-sands of people died as a result of po-litical violence. What of our reveredpresident? He still hasn’t finished histerm of office, but perhaps economicmeltdown will be his legacy.

It would make sense to take whatRhodes gave this country and add toit in a significant and positive way.

Top tips for picking ahousecleaning service

>> Identify whichparts of your homeneed cleaning first, then get quotes fromcleaning services

MAKING the right choice willmean you can enjoy the ser-vices of a professional clean-

ingservice formanyyears tocome,soitisworthspendingabitoftimeinget-ting the decision right.

Here are some of the most impor-tant factors to considerwhenpickinga house-cleaning service.

Find out what is coveredWhich areas of your home do you

actually need to be cleaned? It is agood idea todecide this inadvance sothat you have a better idea when youask the cleaning service for a quote.

When you know exactly what youwant, this can help you to narrowdown the possible cleaners becausesomemaynotprovideeverythingyouneed.

For example, many cleaners andmaids provide basic services includ-ing sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting surfaces, and making thebeds.However,somemayprovideex-tra services such as laundry, windowcleaning, carnet cleaning, cleaning

You should also search online forreviews of various cleaning compa-nies in your area. Many services willhave a website providing some de-tails, and you can then get in touchwith anythat youlike thelook of.

Onething to re-member atthisstageisthat priceshould notbe the onlyconsidera-tion. Youarelikelytofind a widerange ofprices, butbe warnedthat anyservicethat is verycheap may not provide the level ofcleaning that you require.

Ask essential questionsYoushouldwritedownsomeques-

tionstoaskthehousecleaningserviceand then call them up to get a betterideaofwhether theyareright foryou. For example, you could ask whetherthey are insured so that you are cov-ered for any accidents.

Youmayalsowant toaskabout thecleaners and whether they have hadany training, how much experiencethey have, and what types of checksthey havemade. After all, youwill beinviting these cleaners into yourhome, so you want to make sure youcan trust them.

Find out about the cleaningagents used

Youmayalsowanttofindoutaboutthe types of chemical cleaning agentsusedby the company. If you are aller-gic to certain chemicals, or you havechildren or pets, youmaywant themto use particular cleaning agents. Al-so ask them if they provide all of theequipment and cleaningmaterials or

whether you will have to providethem.

Arrange a trial periodA good way to decide whether a

housecleaning service is right for youis to ar-range a fewtrial cleans. That wayyou can in-spect there-sults of thefirst fewcleans anddecidewhetheryou want tohire theser-vice on along-termbasis. If youarenothap-py with thestandard ofcleaningafter a few

visits, you can look for another ser-vice.

Make your preferences clearCommunication is essential when

youfirsthireacleaner.Duringthefirstfew cleans, check the quality of theworkandmakesureyoudiscussany-thing of importance with your clean-er. For example, youmay have a pre-ferred way of making the beds orcleaning the carpet.

Rather than get cross with yourcleaner for not doing things as youwant them done, talk them throughyourpreferencessothattheycanpro-vide the best service possible.

Find the perfect cleaner for yourhome

Theseareallareas thatyoushouldlook into when you are choosing ahousecleaning service, so make sureyou keep them in mind. Finding theright cleaner may take a little while, but it iswellworthputtingintheeffortto do sobecause once youhave foundacleaneryoulike,theycouldbeclean-ing your home for many years tocome.

YOU MAY ALSO WANT TOFIND OUT ABOUT THE TYPES

OF CHEMICAL CLEANINGAGENTS USED BY THE

COMPANY. IFYOU ARE ALLERGIC TO

CERTAIN CHEMICALS, OR YOUHAVE CHILDREN OR PETS,YOU MAY WANT THEM TO

USE PARTICULARCLEANING AGENTSthe cupboards,

and more.Ask around

for referralsA good way

to start yoursearch is to askpeople youknow if theycan recom-mendaservice.Your family, friends, andwork col-leagues may beable to providea recommen-dation, and thiscould be a goodplace to start. They may alsobe able to warnyou off certaincleaners if theyhave had a badexperience.
