Session 2

1. Opening a Final Cut Express Project FileDouble - click the Final Cut Express alias to launch the program.

Choose from the main menu: File > Open ... [apple/command - o]

The ‘Choose a File’ dialogue box appears.

Navigate into the ‘FCEWORKSHP_SESSION 2’ folder

[FCEWORKSHP SESSIONS 2006 > FCEWORKSHP_SESSION 2]

Select the ‘FCE_SESSION 2’ project file and click ‘choose’

The project will load up in FCE.

2. Sequences and Tabs

A sequence is an edited assembly of audio and video clips.

A sequence is always part of a project.

You can have multiple sequences in a project.

Sequences can be exported independently as movies or clips, but they can’t be

saved separately from a project.

The ‘FCE_SESSION 2’ project has two sequences: Fades and Transitions + Effects.

In the Timeline, Tabs provide access to the sequences.

3. Fading In & Out Clips in the Timeline

To display ‘rubber bands’ in the timeline:

Click the Toggle Clip Overlays button at the base of the Timeline window.

Rubber band lines will appear in all video and audio clips.

 

Using the Pen Tool, position at the beginning of the clip’s rubber band line and click to

create a keyframe.

Move the Pen Tool to the position you want the clip to fade up to and click to create the

second keyframe.

Control - click the second keyframe - choose Smooth.

To delete Keyframes:

Control - click the keyframe - choose Clear.

4. TASK 1 : 

In the ‘Fades’ Sequence extend the clips to

overlap, then fade in and out all ten clips.

5. Transitions

To add a transition effect that’s centered on a cut:

In the Timeline, select the edit point between two clips on the same Timeline track.

Choose from the Main menu:

Effects > Video Transitions; then select a transition from the sub-menu’s list.

To adjust the duration of a transition in the Timeline:

With the Selection Tool, drag one edge of the transition to adjust its length.

To make adjustments to the transition:

Double - click the clip in the Timeline and use the controls in the Viewer to make your

adjustments.

6. Rendering Transitions

When you try to play video material that requires rendering a blue background with the

word “Unrendered” appears in the Canvas indicating that the video can’t play in

real time.

The rendering status bars are located above the Timeline ruler.

• If RED: The material needs to be rendered.

• GREY: No rendering is required.

• BLUE / GREY: The material has already been rendered.

• GREY: No rendering is required, realtime playback.

 

In the Timeline, select the transition.

Choose Sequence > Render Selection > Both [apple/command - r]

A progress bar displays the percentage of completed processing while the selected

area is being rendered.

7. TASK 2: 

In the ‘Transitions + Effects’ Sequence

add different transitions to the edit points of

the ten clips.

8. Adding EffectsIn the Timeline, select the clip.

Choose Effects > Video Filters; then select an effect from the sub-menu’s list.

Render the Effect.

To make adjustments to the effect:

Double - click the clip in the Timeline, then select the Filters tab in the Viewer and use the

controls to make your adjustments.

9. TASK 3: 

In the ‘Transitions + Effects’ Sequence

add different effects to the ten clips.

10. Adding a New Sequence

Choose from the main menu: File > New > sequence [apple/command - n]

11. Name the Sequence

Name the sequence: ‘Lip Synch’ and double-click to load the sequence into the

Timeline. An empty sequence appears in the Timeline with a new Tab labeled ‘Lip Synch’.

12. Importing ‘You Wanna What clips’ Folder

Choose from the main menu: File > Import > Folder

The ‘Choose a Folder’ dialogue box appears.

Navigate to the ‘You Wanna What CLIPS’ folder

[FCEWORKSHP SESSIONS 2006 > FCEWORKSHP_SESSION 2 > **You Wanna What

CLIPS]

Select the folder and click ‘choose’

13. Save the Project

Choose from the main menu: File > Save Project [apple/command - s]

 

14. Linked Selection Control

In the Button Bar click the ‘Linked Selection Control’ button to keep the video and audio of

a clip linked in the Timeline.

15. Place ‘You Wanna What’ Audio Clip on the Timeline

Click the Quicktime AIFF audio file to select the audio file.

Then DRAG + DROP onto the audio track of the Timeline [A1/A2].

16. View Waveform

Click the triangle next to the Track Height display to open the Track Layout pop-up menu;

Then select Show Audio Waveforms to toggle the display of waveforms in the Timeline.

17. Add Marker

In the Timeline find a key point in the ‘You Wanna What CD TRACK’ that can be

recognized visually. {“.... some guys.... OHHH.....”}

Place the Playhead in the Timeline at this point.

Select the ‘You Wanna What CD TRACK’ clip in the track and in the Canvas window,

click the Add Marker button. [ or press ‘M’ ]

 

Two pink markers will appear on the audio clip.

18. Place ‘complete.mov’ on the V2 track in the TimelineClick the ‘complete.mov’ to select the clip.

Then DRAG + DROP onto the V2 track of the Timeline.

19. Switching Tracks On and Off

In the Timeline click the A1 and A2 speaker icons to turn off the ‘You Wanna What CDTRACK’.

20. Find the “Ohhh” Point and Add Marker

In the Timeline play the ‘complete.mov’ to find the same key point as marked in on the

‘You Wanna What CD TRACK’. {“....some guys.... OHHH.....”}

Place the Playhead in the Timeline at this point.

Select the ‘complete.mov’ clip in the track and in the Canvas window,

click the Add Marker button. [ or press ‘M’ ]

21. Audio Synching

Move the two ‘complete.mov’ audio tracks until markers are aligned on the Timeline.

Click the A1 and A2 speaker icons in the Timeline to turn on the

‘You Wanna What CD TRACK’.

Then click the A3 and A4 speaker icons to turn off the audio of the ‘complete.mov’.

Play the sequence to check the lip-synch.

Zoom into the Timeline and adjust if needed.

22. TASK 4: 

Adding new tracks, lip-synch the ‘62’ and ‘65’

clips to the ‘you wanna what’ audio track.
