まえがき

　本稿は手書き手稿Ernest　Satow　Diary［横浜開港資料館所蔵1〕のうち，

E．サトウ［日本名：佐藤愛之助］のウルグアイ滞在中［1889～1893］の部

分を転記し，訳注を加えたものである。後に翻訳ないし抄訳を試みることも

あろうと思うが，当面は転記のみに限ることにする。

　手稿は流麗な手蹟で書かれているとはいえ，筆者には必ずしも完全には判

読しきれないものがあった　［問題は外形の判断のように思われるやもしれ

ぬが，筆者の語学能力が一つの制限にもなっているのはもちろんである。ま

た，固有名詞はもちろん，スペイン語の特殊単語が交じることもあって，一

層判読を難しくするときもある。さらに，原本を複写したので，それが「か

すれ」を生じて一層判読困難な箇所も生じた］。

　判読の困難は，単語全体のことも，その一部のこともある。それらは読み

とれた限りで転記したり，それでも単語の一部分が全く読み切れない部分も

あり，その部分は点線で示し，それらには下線を引いて示した。また，一語

ないし数語が続けて読み切れない場合も点線で示した。さらに，記述の意図

的な省略も点線で示す。

July　26　　Revolution　broken　out　in　Buenos　Aires2．　Have　advised

　　　　　Musgrave　to　send“Bramble”＆“Beagle”over＿the　Boea，＆go

2The　Revolution　of　the　Park　was　an　uprising　against　the　national　govern－

ment　of　Argentina　that　took　place　on　26　July　1890　and　started　with　the　take－

over　of　the　Buenos　Aires　Artillery　Park．　It　was　led　by　members　of　the　Civic

Union（which　would　later　give　rise　to　the　modern　Radical　Civic　Union）

against　the　presidency　of　Miguel　Juarez　Celman（of　the　National　Auton・

omist　Party）．　Though　it　failed　in　its　main　goals，　the　revolution　forced

Juarez　Celman’s　resignation　and　marked　the　decline　of　the　elite　of　the　Gen－

ships　to　B．　A．　I　re9．　telegram　from　Bland　asking　if　there　were　a

gunboat．　Telegraphed　in　reply　you　will　see　two　tomorrow，

　　　　Musgrave　came　in　before　church．　No　fresh　news．　at　3　got

telegram　fr。　Bland　saying　no　immediate　danger　to　British　sub－

jects－Cleopatra　not　required　at　present．　Result　of　conflict　still

doubtful，　About　4　a　telegram　fr．　Humfrage　to　Musgrave　telling

him　he　was　wanted　there．　Sent　this　u．p　to　Club　by　Hoisley　who

happened　to　besin　the　house．　Later　on　he　came　to　show　me　the

reply，“Send　Bramble　down　for　me．”

　　　Musgrave　came　in　this　morning　on　his　way　to　the　ship．

Had　nothing　fresh．　Abt．　one　telegram　came　for　him　wch、　I

opened；it　was　to　say．　Bramble　leaves．　This　Musgrave　brought

to　me　about　ten．　Said　I　wished　the　telegram　had　come　fr，　Bland．

Iurged　the　necessity　of　his　going．　He　retorted　that　it　was　no

business　of　mine．　I　lost　my　temper，　said　that　what　I　meant　was

that　I　sld．　Have　preferred　a　telegram　fr．　Bland，　with　whom　lay

the　responsibility　for＿ting　pressure　of　senior　officer．　As　he

was　going　away　he　said　he　could　see［．］　Idid　not　agree　with

　　　My　opinion　is　that　he　is　wrong；that　he　ought　to　have　gone

over　in　the　beginning，　especially　as　now　says　that　he　places　no

confidence　in　Humfrage．＆wld．　have　preferred（．．．possible）

that　Langdon串hld．　Have　been　in　command　of　two　ships．　I

wanted　him　to　go　over　and　lie　in　the　Cleopatra　as　near　as　he

could，　wil．．．read　of　a　steam　launch5　or　of　the　Bramble．

　　　Various　rumours　all　day，　not　to　be　trusted．　I　was　mislead

into　telegraphing　to　F，0．　on　Saturday　that　the　President　was

on　board　the　Spanish　man　of　war，　Late　at　night　it　was　said　that

　　　　Musgrave　came　in　early　this　morning，＆said　he　was　start－

ing　on　board“Bramble”as　soon　as　she　came　in．　Later　arrived

Langdon　with　a　letter　from　Bland　a　note　fr．　Musgrave　saying

that　the　news　brought　by　Langdon　made　him　resolve　to　go

over　with　Cleopatra　as．．．after＿；went　to　Blas　Vidal，　who　said

he　thought　terms　had　been　accepted　by　the　military　men，　but

refused　by　civilians，　for　the　fighting　had　begun　again＆the

fleet　were　bombarding　the　town．　He　considered　that　the　govt．

must　win．　He　spoke　however　in　a　disconsolate　tone　abt．　the

loss　of　life　and　the　retrograde　effect　of　the　revolution．　I　offered

to　send　any　letters　for　him　by　the“Bramble”．　Bland　thanked

me　for　my‘pronlpt　action’in　regard　to　the　gunboats．　It　hap－

pens　that　the　joint　request　of　all　the　diplomats，　the　foreign　men

of　war，　including　the“General　Suarez”7　had　chased　the　Patago－

The　first　specially－fitted　warships　were　the　gunboats　General　Rivera，　General

Artigas，　and　General　Sudrez，　The　first　was　assembled　in　Uruguay　by　the

April　1884；the　second　was　constructed　in　Trieste，　then　part　of　Austria－

Hungary，　and　commissioned　in　December　1884；the　last　was　the　23・year－old

Isimply　replied‘Bon　voyage’．　But　I　am　delighted　that　after　all

he　shld．　have　seen　the　nec俘ssity　of　going　over　in　her．　He　must

have　left　abt．　four．　About　a　quarter＿Ireceived　telegram　from

Humfrage．　Revolution　over．　Government　won．．．．Isuppose　the

revolution＆Govt．　have　come　to　terms，　as　the　fighting　cannot

according　to　what　we　have　heard，　ended　in　the　complete　defeat

of　the　revolution－

　　　Today　the　news　of　the　defeat　of　revolution　in　consequence

of　the　supply　of　ammunition　running　short　has　been　confirmed．

The　conditions　were　no　one　to　be　prosecuted　for　having　taken

up　arms；the　troops　to　return　to　their　quarters，　the　civilians　to

their　homes，　the　cadets8　to　their　colleges9．

　　　We　went　to　the　PoliteamaLo　to　see“Carmen”，　that　is　Marga－

ret，　Mrs．　Langdon＆1．　Charlning．．．，and　the　acting　very　good．

told　him　that　in　my　opinion　he　had　acted　admirably，　especially

in　proposing，　after　the　renewal　of　the　bombardment　after　the

chief　of　the　revolutionary　squadron　had　undertaken　not　to

bombard　without　giving　notices　to　take　the　ships　and　place

Alejo　Julio　Argentino　Roca　Paz（∫uly　17，1843－October　l9，1914）was　an　army

general　who　served　as　President　of　Argentina　from　120ctober　l880　to　l2

0ctober　l886　and　again　from　l20ctober　l898　to　120ctober　1904．．．．After　his

diplomatists　were　waiting　ready　to　send　off　telegram　of

Celman’s　resignation，　when　this　news　came　to　them，　to　their

great　disgust．　However　Rocha　did．not　succeed．35　has　been

already　got　in　the　chamber，　and　only　5　more　were　needed．　The

Union　Civica　were　getting　arms＆ammunition＆were　ready

for　another　outbreak　on　the　Wednesday　evening　before　Cel・

man’刀@resignation，　this　knowledge　no　doubt　induced　Roca＆

Pellegrini　to　act．　When　the　resignation　came　in＆was　debated

in　the　Assembly　he　managed　to　get　in．　The　scene　was　impres－
