It is a pleasure for me to welcome you through this Tourist Guide you have in your hands, thanks to which you will get to know and enjoy everything that Motril has to offer. Our town is situated in a privileged location on the Mediterranean Coast that bathes the province of Granada, benefitting from a splendid climate with average annual temperatures of 18-24 ºC and an immensely varied gastronomy based on local products from the sea and agriculture, highlighting Motril’s famous prawns called ‘quisquilla’ and the subtropical crops such as custard apples, mangos, avocados, also cherry tomatoes and sugar cane, the latter now practically extinguished, but has been the base of the local economy for many years, creating a whole ‘culture’ around this theme that survives as a standard of Motril’s character, affable and friendly away from home and of course with all visitors.

Motril’s traditional attractions are the sun, the beach and golf. Of the nine beaches that the municipality possesses, five boast the “Q” of Quality Tourism Award, two other the Blue Flag Award and another two are included in the Accessible Beaches Guide, which means that the facilities and public image projected of our coast are unparalleled.

To top this off, innovative future projects and the non-stop cultural and sports agenda that can be enjoyed daily, convert our town into a national and international leisure reference throughout the whole year.

Thanks to its geographic location you can explore an incredibly large number of places within a short distance that would surprise the most travelled of visitors. 3Monumental

The Ntra. Sra. de la Cabeza SanctuaryBuilt upon the remains of a Nasarid palace which was the residence of the

Queen Aixa Alhorra, mother of Boabdil. The temple was constructed from 1631 onwards by Isidro de la Chica, who designed a Latin cross building of a single nave. Partially destroyed during the Civil War, it was restored in the second third of the XXth Century respecting the original structure as fully as possible. The restoration was completed in the 60’s with the splendid altarpiece, work of a sculptor from Motril, Manuel González Ligero, which summarizes traditional local values regarding the legend and worship of the Patron Saint of Motril the Virgen de la Cabeza.

The ‘Pueblos de América’ ParkSituated below the Ntra. Sra. de la Cabeza Sanctuary, the park is home to a

variety of exotic and subtropical plants brought over from different countries of the American Continent. In the entrance you will also find the Tourist Information Office and the Sugar Cane Interpretation Centre. An ideal place to relax and see the world from a different perspective.

The Mayor de la Encarnación ChurchDeclared a ‘Monument of Cultural Interest’, this church was built between

1510 and 1514 upon the old Alixara mosque, in an area more to the north than what had been the centre of the Nasarid town. Its construction was work of Alonso Márquez, a Master Builder from Granada, who built a plain Gothic-Mudejar style temple with a rectangular nave and large arches, with four pairs of lateral chapels and a slightly wider chancel. At the beginning of the XVIIth Century this last area was removed due to an enlargement of the temple in 1603, adding on a markedly classicist transept. Unfortunately, the chancel and large part of the temple were destroyed by a gunpowder explosion within the temple on the 21st of January in 1938. After the Civil War the church was reconstructed and some of the details of the original Mudejar temple were reincorporated.

The Town HallThe existing building dates from 1631 and was constructed upon the ruins

of the previous town hall destroyed in 1620 by a gunpowder explosion during a Berber attack. It is work of the Master Builder Isidro de la Chica, native of Motril, and still conserved from the original building are the façade and the main gallery which respect the design of a typical Señorial house of those times.

The Calderón de la Barca TheatreDates from 1880 and represents an

Italian style theatre with neo-classic decoration. The theatre has been totally restored, carefully conserving its original aspect and has been declared a ‘Monument of Cultural Interest’. Small in size but of great beauty; from September to June the majority of the cultural events take place in this magnificent theatre. The Countess Torre-Isabel House

Señorial Andalusian-style building, constructed in the second half of the XVIIIth Century. Restored and converted into the town’s museum-house, today it is Motril’s main cultural centre. Worth mentioning is the central patio decorated with classic style ceramic tiles.

The Casa de la PalmaThis building was originally a sugar

refinery known locally as Lucas Palma’s Mill. In the middle of the XVIIth Century the refinery and house became property of the eldest son of the Victoria family who was the owner until the middle of the XIXth Century and in 1983 it became a municipal property which was restored and converted into a Cultural Centre, today housing the main Municipal Library and Historical Archives as well as being an Associated Centre of the National Open University (U.N.E.D.).

The Carmen ChurchConstructed in the XVIIth Century and

dedicated at first to Saint Roque, the Patron Saint chosen by the town during the epidemic of 1583. In the XVIIIth Century, its devotion changed to the Virgin Carmen. It is of proto-baroque style and consists of a single nave, a hemispherical dome above the chancel and a side-chapel heavily decorated with baroque style plaster decoration.

The Victoria ChurchDates from 1604 and founded by

Alonso de Contreras for the ‘Mínimos de la Victoria’ monks who occupied this building until their expulsion in the first third of the XIXth Century. The most outstanding features are the original grey-stone mannerist style façade dating from 1610 and work of Pedro Cano, and the original main door of the convent.

The Capuchinos Church (Divina Pastora)

A good example of the conventual architecture of this Order, built in the second half of the XVIIth Century. Building of very austere Mudejar style, containing a single undecorated nave, a risen choir and a chancel covered with a dome. It conserves some good images of the XVIIIth Century.

The Church of the Nazarenas Convent

It is situated on the south side of the convent and has a Latin cross floor with simple transept. There is a covered vestibule with two separated raised wings. The reduced main nave is covered with a half barrel vault. The transept has an illuminated dome and is decorated with the same frieze as the main nave. There are three steps up to the semicircular chancel, covered with a semi dome and with the only projections being the cornice and the Tuscan pilasters.

town, it was erected in the XVIIth Century and the image it is dedicated to was declared Patron Saint of Motril due to the Plague epidemic of 1679. The architectural style is baroque.

The Señor de Junes HermitageSituated in the old town what was

originally the Jewish quarter, whose Jewish inhabitants were expelled from 1492. The building is very small and although quite a few modifications have been made, due to its decoration and structure it makes us believe that it dates from before the XVIII Century. The Carchuna Castle

The Farillo of CalahondaThe Farillo of Calahonda was constructed by the mason Juan Alonso. In 1762, besides

a tower corporal, the tower had three lighthouse keepers and three infantrymen and it could have had three 8 pound cannons. They saw the necessity to build a bank around it due to the importance of the port that it defended. The tower was built to defend the coast from pirates and Berbers. There is no record of an exact date of its construction; however it could be from around the XVIth Century. It was occupied from 1839 by the riflemen called ‘carabineros’, and its structure was modified adding a light on the highest part to orientate the boats that came into the Port of Calahonda.

pirate attacks. The square building has a central patio and is an exemplary work of military engineering of the XVIIIth Century.

A splendid temporary exhibition hall over 800 m2 in size, located in the Ntra. Sra. Del Pilar Factory. In a near future, a theme restaurant called ‘La Fábrica’ and the Industrial Sugar Cane Museum, will be incorporated in the same complex.

The Preindustrial Sugar Cane Museum, Palma RefineryMotril’s Preindustrial Sugar Cane Museum is unique in its kind due to its location,

materials and the multimedia didactical methods incorporated. The town, its culture and its landscape have been linked to the processes of the exploitation and manufacture of sugar cane for almost a thousand years. The Museum, that includes technological recreations and archaeological material, is situated on the remains of the Palma Sugar Refinery, dating from the XVIth century, being the only sugar refinery partially conserved from the preindustrial Spain.

The History Museum of Motril In the History Museum of Motril, local history is told with scientific precision in a

didactical and direct form. Varied communication and information systems, based on the use of new technologies, are used as the way of reaching the general public, whilst objects and documents reinforce the understanding of the stories told. The History Museum’s focus is appropriate with the times, original in its resources and contents, in its language and communication strategy, all in all a new way of seeing and feeling history. The MHIMO portrays Motril as a town that is ever changing, a leader, competitive and rich in history. Situated in the building known as the ‘Casa Garcés’, where you can discover the town’s history from the first settlers to our days, with a vision towards the future.

The Geomining CentreMotril s Geomining Centre, located to the north of the town, shows us the

different mining periods through the material remains of the work carried out in the ‘Cerro del Toro’ mine, while at the same time offering an interesting multimedia message. This Centre allows visitors to discover one of the geological areas of the important mining region located around Motril. The visit of the mine is conceived to be highly pedagogical, paying particular attention to geology and industrial mining, the world of mining and the surrounding area of the Geomining Centre and Forest Park of ‘El Cerro del Toro’.

The Sugar Cane Interpreta-tion Centre

The Sugar Cane Interpretation Centre focuses essentially on the botanical and scientific aspects of sugar, making it the starting point of the wide range of cultural and tourist attractions related to Sugar Cane in Motril, reinforcing the content of these attractions which all together make for a truly enjoyable and leisurely visit. The most important idea of this centre is the creation of an inverted theatre in which visitors come accross different scenes made up of graphic art, murals, video projections and spectacular illumination, converting it into a type of play containing sugar-related information. The Montero Rum BodegaFounded in 1963 by Mr. Francisco Montero Martín, descendant of a family with

many years of experience in the sugar cane field, with a refined taste for quality liqueurs and an obsessive desire to achieve the elaboration of a ‘perfect’ rum of exquisite taste and fine aromas. Situated on the outskirts of Motril and recently refurbished, it contains 362 American virgin oak casks for the vintage and ageing of their rums through the traditional Solera and Criaderas method. For those that would like to discover the authentic Spanish rum, they offer guided tours with tasting on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 12 noon. Open for groups, by appointment, at any other time. The Fishing Development Centre Sea Interpretation Room (SiMaR)This permanent exhibition, belonging to the County Council of Granada, offers

information on ecology and marine biology, sustainable fishing and aqua-culture, and cultural-fishing patrimony of the province of Granada. In the aquariums the most representative species of this area can be found, complimented with video projections and other informative elements. Guided tours can be arranged for groups of 25 people. For groups of 10 to 25 people, guided marine tours of the fishing port and auction can be arranged, from Monday to Friday from 17:45 to 18:30 h; booking required minimum one week in advance. Poniente BeachA large beach with family atmosphere, it boasts a splendid promenade in memory

of the Belgium King Balduino, ideal for taking a walk, bike-riding or roller-skating and also for open-air activities and concerts. With many facilities and beachfront bars and restaurants, at night time it is the centre of diversion during the summer time. It is the nearest beach to the centre of Motril, only 2 km. away. It boasts the ‘Q’ for Tourism Quality award. Next to this beach we find the Cable Beach, given this name as during the construction of the commercial port the wagons loaded with stones came from what is today the Rules damn for its construction.

Motril is the gateway to the Mediterranean and boasts some 20 km. of beaches, wonderful landscapes with large cliffs dotted with watchtowers from Muslim times, looking over to the African Continent.

Granada Beach With a peaceful atmosphere

and surrounded by a special light thanks to the intense green of the golf course. Chosen many years ago by the King of Belgium for his holidays at ‘Villa Astrida’, nowadays it is an important residential area in expansion, ideal for golfers and water sport enthusiasts.It also boasts the ‘Q’ for Quality Tourism Award.

The The Beach of Torrenueva is 2 km. long. With shallow water and fine sand, the beach extends up until the Jolúcar rock. Just 6 km. east of Motril, originally it was a small fishing village which has converted into a busy and popular holiday destination. There is a watchtower in the entrance of the village called ‘Torre-Atalaya Nueva’, dating from the XVIIIth Century, from where the village’s name originates. It boasts the ‘Q’ for Quality Tourism Award.

Continuing east we find two small naturist coves, the Joya Beach, protected by beautiful cliffs and the Sactratif Point. The Beach of Carchuna is the preferred by fishing and windsurf enthusiasts. This beach extends 4 km. from the Sacratif Point until a small inclined tower known locally as ‘El Farillo’. Surrounded by fertile

agricultural land, where we come across an old castle, a military fortress that protected the coast from pirate attacks. It boasts the ‘Q’ for Quality Tourism and the Blue Flag Awards.

Below an imposing cliff we find the lovely village of Calahonda, with small fishing boats and the beach with deep and transparent waters. Situated 13 km. from Motril, it is a place for relaxing in a peaceful environment, ideal for families. It boasts the ‘Q’ for Quality Tourism Award.

In Motril there are many traditional celebrations throughout the whole year, starting with the Float Parade of the Three Kings on the 5th of January, a typical celebration for children but also loved by adults, hugely supported by local people. Closely followed on the 13th by the procession of the so-called Earthquake Day, as on this day in 1804 a series of devastating earthquakes came to an end when two of the sacred images where taken out in procession through the town, a procession that is now annually repeated. The processions during Easter Week are a must for any visitor. It is one of the most deep-rooted religious traditions and attracts masses of people due to its beauty. The last procession on Easter Sunday morning has been declared of National Tourist Interest. With the arrival of spring, the Day of the Crosses, is celebrated on the 3rd of May; decorated crosses can be found in many streets and squares with people wearing flamenco dresses dancing and singing around them. Continuing on, the 23rd to the 24th of June is the Night of San Juan when huge bonfires are lit along the whole of the coast. July is the month of the Patron Saint Festivals of Carchuna, El Varadero, La Garnatilla and Calahonda, with special mention to be given to the 16th when the Virgin Carmen is taken out to sea from the Port of Motril and Torrenueva and is paraded around; it is the festival of the fishermen and the people from the port. And the most awaited celebration is in August in honour of the Patron Saint of Motril, the Virgen Ntra. Sra. de la Cabeza, the 15th being the big day. A week full of activities for all ages, during the day the Fair in the shopping streets is full of atmosphere followed by the magical evenings in the Fair Ground, jam-packed with people, lights and music. In September there are fiestas in the inland village of Los Ta blo nes and to complete this calendar of activities, in October there are fiestas in the neighbourhoods of Las Angustias and La Divina Pastora.

Great cultural tradition makes Motril a reference point regarding its cultural programme. Motril boasts the only theatre on the Coast of Granada, which offers a spectacular setting for the majority of the cultural events programmed all year round; it also houses the ‘Pablo Coronado’ exhibition room. The Museum-House of the Countess of Torre-Isabel, a señorial building from the XVIIIth Century, houses the Town Council Cultural Department and displays temporary exhibitions as well as other activities. Without forgetting the Sugar Store Room in the Pilar Factory, the Nave de los Arcos and the Youth Centre below the Tourist Office, that offer locations for exhibitions and events. Motril is also a University town since the setting up of the UNED (Open University) in the Casa de la Palma where the Municipal Library and Historic Archives are located. Alongside, there are also private exhibition halls, like those of La Caja Rural and Caja Granada’s Cultural Centre, the latter boasting a large number of cultural activities including films and concerts. The splendid climate

also allows many outdoor events to be organised such as the ‘EntreCulturas’ Music Festival, in places such as the seafront promenade, the ‘Pueblos de Amércia’ Park or central squares. The town’s history, economy, culture and landscape have been shaped for more than a thousand years due to the exploitation of sugar cane. Motril, ‘Town of Sugar’ proudly offers the highlight of its cultural attractions, a museum unique in Europe, the ‘Preindustrial Sugar Cane Museum’. In a near future the ‘Industrial Sugar Cane Museum’ and the theme restaurant ‘La Fábrica’ will be opened to the public in the Ntra. Sra. del Pilar Factory. Without forgetting the Fair Ground where the August Fair takes place, and the magnificent Multifunctional Bull Ring. Motril is a modern and growing town where there are an endless variety of options for diversion throughout the whole year. Bars with live music, beach bars, pubs and nightclubs where enjoyment is guaranteed. And the extensive shopping area with multicoloured shop windows that attract the visitor’s eye.

25Natural Areas

The geographic location of Motril, straddled between the sea and the mountains, gives way to an interesting variety of natural areas. Coastal areas like the Sacratif Point or the Cliffs of Calahonda, where in the same space species from the dry Almería land and other species from hot and humid areas group together. Many birds nest in these cliffs. We cannot forget the Karst of Calalonda with more than a hundred cavities adorned with stalagmites and stalactites.

Inland on the national road towards Granada we find the impressive gorges of the Tajo de los Vados, a huge karstic canyon cut out by the Guadalfeo river during the last five million years, ideal for rock climbing. And the Jaral Mountain Range, to the northeast of Motril which connects with the most eastern area of cork oak in Andalusia with a great variety of wildlife in this Mediterranean Forest.

A special mention for the wetlands with the Charca de Suárez, declared a State Assisted Natural Reserve, that provides an important food supply and nesting area for many migratory birds. Open every day two hours before sunset and at weekends it is also open in the morning from 09:00 to 13:00 h.

Inland from the coast there are rural areas and small villages such as La Garnatilla, which is very picturesque, and Puntalón and Los Tablones, ideal to get away from the hustle and bustle of town life, for walking or hiking, trying the local dishes, the local wine, and joining in with the local festivals. To the west of Motril is Minasierra, where we can enjoy the ‘Trail of the Sugar Factories and Subtropical Trees’, with panoramic views to the sea. The ‘Casa de los Bates’ is also to be found in this area, a beautiful palace from the XIXth Century now converted into a Hotel which boasts botanical gardens from the XVIIIth Century, both can be visited by appointment.

The important autonomous Port of Motril includes a commercial port, a fishing harbour and the Royal Yacht Club. Visit the fishing harbour in the evening, watch the fishing boats arrive and unload their array of goods that are then auctioned off; it is a must to try these delicacies in any of the local bars or restaurant.

You will never forget the view from the Royal Yacht Club with the Mediterranean Sea, the yachts, the plain, the mountains and finally the intense blue of Motril’s sky. Motril is also a popular port of call for cruise ships; passengers can visit everything our town has on offer or visit the Alhambra Palace, Granada, the Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras, all to be found very close by. Motril is also connected by ferry with Melilla, her twinned town, with a crossing almost daily.

31Sports

Motril is one of the few towns where you can practise every imaginable type of sports thanks to its varied geography, a place where even the most adventurous visitors can make their dreams come true. Ski in the Sierra Nevada mountain range within an hour and a quarter’s drive from Motril and navigate or swim in the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, both in the same day. Trekking or relaxed walking following the sign-posted footpaths enjoying the scents of lavender and rosemary, fly free like a bird observing the spectacular beaches from your paraglide or why not try rock-climbing. There really is not enough room in this guide to explain all that Motril has on offer for sports enthusiasts.

Promoting quality tourism, we must not forget the magnificent ‘Los Moriscos’ Golf Course, incomparable in its location on the seafront on the Granada Beach and with the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop, including a social club, a beach club, practise ground and a caddies’ masters service; two further 18 hole golf courses will be added in a near future. Visitors can also take advantage of magnificent installations like the covered municipal swimming pool, a complete and modern covered Sports Pavilion, an open-air sports complex, municipal tennis and paddle courts, an excellent turf football ground and stadium, etc.

33Gastronomy

Trying out the wide range of Motril’s local dishes and typical products is a real pleasure for the senses. The exotic flavours of the exquisite tropical fruit grown on the Costa Tropical of Granada, such as avocados, custard apples, mangos, papaya and guayaba, mix harmoniously together with the flavours of the Mediterranean Sea and the local produce from this predominantly agricultural area.

The fishing port supplies an unbelievable array of fish and seafood every day, served straight from the Mediterranean to the table; we also cannot forget the Moorish influence which still influences our culinary traditions today. Another way of enjoying the culinary wealth of the area is trying the ‘tapas’ offered in any of the long list of bars and restaurants, many of which can be found in the guide book ‘Tapas in Motril’.

Fried ‘espichás’ with garlic: anchovies dried in the sun, salted and then fried with garlic and accompanied with fried eggs; this delicious dish was traditionally prepared as a hearty breakfast.

‘Quisquillas’: locally caught prawns, they are a must for all seafood lovers.

‘Choto al Ajillo Cabañil’: traditional stew made from kid, typically prepared for celebrations in the countryside.

‘Migas’: in appearance like breadcrumbs, they are made from semolina flour and traditionally prepared on rainy days, though there are few, and accompanied by a variety of fried fish.

‘Cazuela de San Juan’: delicious cake made with pumpkin and various spices and prepared before the Night of San Juan.

We also recommend the Mixed Fried or Grilled Fish, skewered Sardines grilled on the beach, ‘Pulpo seco’ (dried octopus) served with dressed cabbage, the ‘fideos aparte o a la marinera’ (fish flavoured noodles with mayonnaise), the large variety of paellas as well as all types of meat (oxtail, leg of lamb, etc.).

‘Torta Real’: without doubt this pudding is Motril’s most famous culinary dish which in the times of Alfonso XIII was regularly transported to the Royal Quarters. Of Arab origin, the exact almond-based recipe is a well-kept secret of the Videras family passed on through the generations since 1840.
