Theresa ChoiHKCC has launched the Marketing Professional Series since September 2006. It aims to sharpen students’ practical insights, provide marketing students with more learning experiences, and update students’ marketing knowledge and real-life cases through interacting with marketing professionals. It also covers various activities such as personality workshops, guest talks by experienced marketers, company visits, graduate sharing sessions, and service learning through supporting the events of The Chartered Institute of Marketing and The Hong Kong Institute of Marketing.

On 28 October 2016, Mr Alfred Cheng, General Manager of Sales of POAD, was invited to deliver a talk to students on “What Makes an Impactful Outdoor Campaign?” In the talk, Mr Cheng taught students how to develop a creative outdoor campaign to better reach their target markets by demonstrating several insight-stimulating international outdoor campaigns. A lot of students participated in the Student Reflection Competition after attending this inspiring talk. The following is the reflection of the champion:

Champion: Cheng Ka-yee, Yvonne Year 2 student of Associate in Business (Marketing)In the past, I often regarded outdoor advertisements as something boring and standardised. To me, they just publicised products and services on billboards, in public places, or inside physical stores. However, what Mr Cheng shared in the talk has completely changed my mindset. I now realise that outdoor campaigns can be launched through many layers of meaning. They not only focus on transmitting marketing messages to potential customers, but also include the important elements of interaction and innovation.

The talk introduced the elements and formats of a successful outdoor campaign. Through case studies, Mr Cheng has inspired me that interactive, experiential advertising is an indispensable element in any outdoor campaigns. Amongst all the international outdoor campaigns presented, I found McDonald’s the most impressive. McDonald’s created an interactive outdoor sign-billboard with a challenging game. Passers-by were invited to use their smartphones as controllers to recover a melted ice-cream. If they completed the task successfully, they could get a free ice-cream at the nearest McDonald’s within a specific time period. The use of scarcity appeal was very effective and coherent to convey a message – a time limit to enjoy and redeem your own ice-cream. This game created an incentive for participants to visit McDonald’s.

The talk has also further broadened my horizons. I have learnt to think out of the box, which is a key to success. I believe a wide vision and creative thinking can facilitate my studies and career development in the marketing industry.

* These are suggestions only. There could be several approaches to the same case.

1. Was Samsung’s recall of Note 7 a correct decision? Please explain.

2. What consequences would Samsung have borne if Note 7 had not been recalled?

1. The recall was a correct decision. To Samsung, the most important and valuable asset is its reputation and goodwill, which is an intangible asset of the company. If Samsung had failed to take such an action, it could have lost more than US$5 billion since people would lose confidence in this brand. The benefits of the recall, in fact, have outweighed the costs.

2. The combustible Note 7 could endanger its users and damage their property. If there had been no recall of Note 7, not only the brand and reputation would have been damaged, but also lawsuits and users’ claims would have incurred, resulting in compensation and settlements. Besides, there would have been an adverse impact on the sales volumes of other Samsung’s products.

In September 2016, Samsung, a tech giant in South Korea, recalled a total of 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after a number of cases where the flagship product had caught fire. To ensure customers’ safety, Samsung stopped the production of Note 7, and users could exchange for other Samsung phones.

Samsung announced that the recall would cause a loss of US$10 billion in sales and an estimated US$5 billion drop in profit. Besides, the company projected that the stock price of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. would be adversely affected due to the incident. Though the company’s stock price dropped to KRW1.46 million in mid-September 2016, it gradually went up to KRW1.97 million in early February 2017.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump, the elected 45th U.S. President, made a series of promises including calling for additional tariffs on China, Mexico and other countries, withdrawing U.S.A from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and attacking those U.S. companies which outsource their jobs. These promises, if carried out, would have adverse impacts on global economic ties, and trigger counter-reactions in global trade and business. Though President Trump has set up a special office on trade and industrial policy led by a harsh critic of free trade, and has chosen a U.S. ambassador who has long experience in promoting bilateral trade to China, it remains unclear how he is to fulfil these promises.

If you are interested in knowing more about those counter-reactions in the existing global trade and business beneficiaries of the new global economic order, please read the article “Trade’s Coming Rough Turn” on page 8 of the aforesaid publication.

At present, the U.S. federal government taxes U.S. companies at 35% on all profits they earn on a worldwide basis. Nevertheless, there is leeway under the tax law. If a U.S company earns profits overseas but leaves its foreign earnings, either parked in cash or invested in plants and investments, in the nation(s) where the profits are earned, the earnings are exempted from U.S. tax until they are returned to the U.S. holding company as repatriated income. To avoid the bite from the U.S. tax authority, U.S. multinational companies routinely park a substantial share of their foreign earnings abroad. When these companies need to pay dividends to their shareholders, they will fund their payouts by borrowing. In his presidential campaign, Donald Trump proposed lowering repatriated “untaxed foreign earnings” (UFE) from 35% to 10%.

If you want to know how U.S multinationals and their shareholders will benefit if Trump’s proposal regarding UFE becomes law, please read the article “How Investors Win if Cash Comes Home” on page 22 of the aforesaid publication.

It has been over 40 years since scholars such as Jacob Getzels and Peter Drucker have empirically demonstrated the central role of problem framing in creativity, and emphasised the importance of proper diagnosis of problems encountered. Today, organisations, however, are still struggling to get it right at their problem solving. According to the result of a survey of 106 C-Suite executives who represented 91 companies in both the private and public sectors in 17 countries, 85% of the respondents either strongly agreed or agreed that their organisations were poor in problem diagnosis. Also, 87% either strongly agreed or agreed that such problem cost the organisation significantly. Here come the questions: Why does it happen? What is the solution?

The article “Are You Solving the Right Problem?” elaborates the issue and proposes a new approach in the form of seven practices for successfully reframing problems and finding creative solutions. If you are interested in enhancing your problem-solving skills, please read the article on page 76 of the aforesaid publication.

Though some British people still cannot accept the result, Brexit is a piece of hard fact. What remains to be done is how to take Britain out of the EU’s single market and customs union. The Brexit goals, therefore, have become the main paradox to Theresa May since she became the UK Prime Minister in July 2016. She has been urged by businesses to clarify her detailed thinking on Brexit. From her past speeches on Brexit, May seems to opt for a “hard”, or so called “clear” as preferred by her advisers, break with Europe. So far, nothing is certain on this issue, except that negotiations for a comprehensive deal with the EU would still be tricky and time-consuming.

To know more about the possible approach that Britain is going to take to achieve the Brexit goals, please read the article “Brexit – Doing It the Hard Way” on page 46 of the aforesaid publication.

Forbes Asia (December 2016)

Netmarble is the largest mobile-gaming company in South Korea. According to App Annie, a firm tracking the iOS and Google Play markets, Netmarble ranked No. 8 in app sales in 2015 worldwide. Netmarble’s unambiguous success is attributable to its founder, Bang Jun-Hyuk. Similar to Steve Jobs of Apple, Bang left the tech companies he started, and then managed to bring them back into the fold and engineered their striking revivals when these companies nearly tanked. With his 32% stake in Netmarble and a current net worth of US$1 billion as Forbes Asia estimates, Bang broke into the billionaire rank for the first time at his age of 47.

If you want to know how Bang, a high school dropout who is not fluent in English, becomes South Korea’s richest technology entrepreneur, please read the article Mobile Master” on page 29 of the aforesaid publication.

Dividends and Dividend PoliciesPauline Ho

Apart from share price appreciation (i.e.“capital gain” after deduction of the selling proceeds from the original purchasing price of a share), an investor regards cash dividend paid by a company as the most common form of an investment return.

Share prices generally surge with unexpected increases in dividends, and drop with unexpected decreases in dividends. Companies try to avoid reducing dividends and maintain a smooth dividend policy as changes in the dividend policy may imply the management’s prediction about a company’s prospects. The market generally interprets an increase in dividends as a signal of a promising prospect for a company, and it will be able to maintain a higher dividend policy in the future. On the contrary, a decrease in dividends is usually an indication that the firm can no longer sustain the current dividend level.

Why have Pineapples been Internationally Recognised as a Symbol of Hospitality? Angel So

Pineapples have enjoyed a rich and romantic heritage as a symbol of welcome, friendship, and hospitality. During the 17th century, European explorers brought pineapples from the West Indies. This fruit was then grown in Europe, and became a favoured fruit to serve the royals and elites. Pineapples were later introduced to North America, becoming a part of hospitality there. They were displayed on doors or gateposts, which acted as an announcement to friends and acquaintances: “The ship is in! Come to join us. Food and drinks are here for all!” Hence, pineapples have been internationally recognised as a symbol of hospitality and a sign of friendliness, warmth, cheer, graciousness and conviviality.

How are Hotels Classified?Hotels can be classified according to location (i.e. city centre, resort, airport, or freeway), the types of services offered (e.g. casino and convention) and price (i.e. luxury, midscale, budget and economy). The American Automobile Association (AAA) classifies hotels by the diamond award, and the Forbes Travel Guide uses a five-star award.

The Hong Kong Hotel Classification System features five key indicators, namely facility, location, staff-to-room ratio, average achieved room rate, and business mix. Hotels provide their own information for each indicator, except “average achieved room rate” which is compiled based on the results of the Hotel Room Occupancy Surveys. Then, a score will be given to each hotel based on their information provided and the survey results.

What is Viral Marketing?Hester Chow

“Viral” used to be a negative word for most people, but not for marketers today. Viral marketing, from its literal sense, is a marketing strategy which inspires users to spread information to or share messages with others. A simple message on our smartphones, a news article or a YouTube video that we share with others via social media can go “viral”. “Ice Bucket Challenge” and “Mannequin Challenge” are good examples.

However, viral marketing can create some problems. Companies create and publish online contents quickly, but these messages can be unattractive and their contents can be overloading. As a result, they cannot reach the target audience. It is also difficult to measure the actual benefits behind each “share” of the message.
