Year after year the BCA National 8-BallChampionships is touted as “TheGreatest Pool Tournament in theWorld!” and for good reason. The BCA National 8-BallChampionships is the longest running, amateur tournament presented by anational pool league. The firstchampionships were staged at theDayton Convention Center in Ohio in1977. The tournament’s growth hasrequired larger and larger venues andThe Riviera Hotel & Casino, LasVegas, provides over 100,000 feet ofballroom and meeting space.Pavilions overflow with an ocean ofTour Blue Simonis Cloth, dotted withSuper Aramith Pro balls on Diamond

“Smart Tables.” The hotel’s room quota quickly sold out to ardent poolfans, and their families, 60 days before the event.Predator has joined forces as a Platinum Sponsor and added a selectionof their POISON CUES as prizes for the amateur players. The billiard industry recognizes the BCA National 8-Ball Championshipsas the place to be in the month of May.No other tournament unites moreamateurs, professionals, leagueoperators, referees, vendors, andspectators in a shared experience thatcommands the title of “The GreatestPool Tournament in the World!”This year, the playbca.comproduction surpassed member’swildest dreams.More than 7100 players, from 17countries, competed in 20+ events inthe hunt for $750,000 in prize money. And, if that’s not enough, the BCA PoolLeague members, men and womenalike, love pro pool. Hence, the long-standing tradition of bringing theworld’s elite players to Las Vegas. This year, BCA National 8-BallChampionships hosted the biggest field of back to back pro action in itshistory.

Matchroom Sports delivered its WorldPool Masters tournament. DragonPromotions, in association withDiamond Billiard Products andPlaybca.com, relocated the Predator10-Ball Championships, and TheAction Report, sponsored by OBCues, drew record crowds with theirbig money, one-on-one TAR Pitmarathons. The league, also, offers pros a placeto play. Says CEO Mark Griffin, “Youcan’t get so good in our league thatyou don’t have a place to play. Yourmembership doesn’t become invalid”

So. it was no surprise when WPBA champion Kelly Fisher won theWomen’s Grand Master Singles, or that Diamond Derby City Classicwinner Jason Kirkwood is the 2008 Men’s Grand Master, but what about

Noel Campos? Noel, from Modesto, California, won the Women’s OpenSingles, and $6000...from a wheel chair... and, she’s legally blind!Griffin’s new bride, Sunny, showed joyas she captured the Women’s PlayerMember Singles title. Had Sunnygotten a few pointers from her newhubby? Before he took reins of theleague, Mark actually had time to hit afew competitive balls himself and hadachieved Master status in the leaguesystem.Mike Williams and Susan WilliamsChandler overpowered Mary Rakin &Colin Mazaikain in the Open ScotchDoubles. Mary, surely, had one of themost memorable days of her life; shehad also secured second against Noelin the Women’s Grand MasterSingles.Randy Goettlicher, who had beenfreely educating league members at

the Cue-Tech Pool School all week, finished runner up against Don Harpin the Super Senior Singles. Randy, obviously, practiced what hepreached.Men’s Open Singles titlist DannyBarnes pocketed $11,000, while SamKirby got$8,000, and Shayne Morrow$6,000. Hey, that’s $25,000 rightthere, and more than most Proevents. Who says pool doesn’t pay?Canada’s Tyler Edie exacted revengeon being last year’s runner-up as hewon the BCA Pool League 9-BallChallenge. Demi Jelatis from

Brooklyn Park, MN took second.Laura Smith corralled Efren, Bustey, Mexico’s Rafael Martinez, Allison,Gerda, and a slew of other pool celebs at The Billiard EducationFoundation’s annual Challenge of the Stars. Members had too much fun

STARS WERE SHINING AT BILLIARD EDUCATION FUNDRAISER

from: Gene MillerThe phone call I got from Allen Jones Wednesday evening, May 14, wasnews we both knew was inevitable. John Hayes had died that morning. Hehad taken ill several weeks earlier, and we hadn’t heard his jovial voice fora long time.Big John certainly played more of my tournaments than anybody else, andI can vividly remember my first encounter with him. It was early in 1991and The Great Entertainer had just opened. At our Monday USPPAtournament he came up, shook my hand and said “I’m John Hayes, andI’m putting in Doug McCumsey and Bud De Soto and myself. What is it,ten bucks?” John enjoyed doing favors for people. After I moved our USPPAtournaments back to Family Billiards, he could see how busy I was so he

began taking advance signups, collecting the money for me. He was theonly person who ever did that, and he enjoyed it. He once gave me two fullrolls of breakpot tickets, saying, “I just had these laying around and I knowyou can use ‘em.”A tournament director deals with every type of pool player, and it’s thecharacters with a sense of humor who create the best memories. I willalways remember Big John’s ever-present sense of humor. A conversationwith John was always punctuated with amusing comments, and who couldforget his hilarious artwork on all those score sheets? We have lost a goodfriend.

from: Chris Rogers and Ford, Tournament DirectorsOn April 26th and 27th the Northwest Women’s Pool Association held theirsecond of seven tour stops for 2008 at The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon. It’sconsidered a favorite event by many of the players for several reasons,

notably the amazing playing conditions on the many original BrunswickGold Crowns. The Cue Ball sells, installs, and maintains tables from a store located inthe pool room itself, and it follows, that they would keep up their own tablesto a high standard. If you want to check it out, they hold a monthly tournamentcalled “Win Jim’s Money”, Jim Lebold being the owner. There were twenty players on Saturday morning (the price of gas is nothelping turnouts), but a smaller field can mean tougher competition and noroom for error and there were some great players who didn’t make it toSunday. The six who did make it were Cindy Sliva playing Mary Hopkin tohill - hill before closing to get to the point match. She faced Mary Olson, who beat Jessica Orth 7-3, and Cindy then got on the point by winning 7-4.Mary H then squeaked past Tamre Rogers 7-6, but Jessica fell to Liz Cole7-3. Liz, who lost her first match, had rolled through the B side and next gotMary H 7-5. But it’s hard to win a tournament after losing the first, and MaryO got her rematch in the finals by beating Liz 7-4. It looked like the finalswould be a rout when Mary took a quick 6-1 lead in the single race to nine, but a couple of mistakes by Mary and some strong outs had Cindy firsttying it at 7, and then taking the last two to win her first ever NWPAtournament. Thanks to everyone who came to watch, the entire Cue Ball staff, and theplayers for making our job so easy. The next stop is at Uncle Jack’s inLynnwood on June 15th and 16th followed by our first event at the brandnew “Golden Fleece” in July. See you there.

This drill is an oldiebut a goodie. Thesetup is simple —just put a ball at eachof the 15intersections of thediamonds, as shownin the diagram. Thisfills the area outsidethe kitchen.

The first level of playis to simply pocket allthe balls

beginning with cue ball in hand in the kitchen. This is harder than it looks, especially if youhappen to be on a small table, but you willeventually find good patterns to get the ballsoff the table, and it is a feel for such patternsthat’s important.

This version of the drill was used in Boys’Clubs competitions in the last millenium, andI met one of the competitors who had runnearly 200.

The next level of play is to run out without thecue ball touching any other ball. This is onlya small complication. The main thing to learnfrom this is stop and stun shots whichminimize the movement on the cue ball andmakes the direction of the cue ball off theobject ball very predictable.

The final level of the drill is to not let the cue ball hitany cushion. This will require much better planning, especially towards the end of the rack when thereare only a few balls left to shoot and you don’t havea lot of options.

Once you get your no-rail position working well, tryit out in a regular game such as eight ball or nineball. It won’t work in all situations, but if the table isset up well with no major problems, see if you canget out without touching a cushion. The greatchampion “Babe” Cranfield, who ran 768 balls inpractice, said the greatest feat of cue ball controlhe had ever seen was a60-ball run by Ralph Greenleaf. A run that long isnot remarkable, but Greenleaf sent the cue ball tothe cushion only twice during the 4-plus racks.

It’s nice to be able to use the cushions for position, but it’s even better to be able to avoid them.

players plan to take a stand against the WorldPool-Billiard Association (WPA) effectiveimmediately due to its “medaling” within theUnited States men’s professional pool scene. The UPA, as an organization, officially receivedword just hours ago that a press release wasbeing provided to media from the BilliardCongress of America (BCA) concerning achange in ranking and player communicationoverview. In the press release by the BCA, itstated that the decision to “manage the men’sprofessional rankings system and playercommunications duties” was to be performedby the BCA.The President of the UPA, Frank Alvarez, commented that “it is regrettable that I was onlyinformed of this hours before the release. I sit

on the BCA/WPA committee and this topic somehow was not presentedto the very player’s association that is directly involved. The UPA is officiallyrecognized by the BCA as the ‘governing body’ and yet we were notconsulted on this matter nor informed by the BCA of any such release.Obviously, we will need time to get to the heart of the matter and deal withit properly. The BCA is a trade organization and not a player’s associationso this not only undermines, but underestimates the wishes of our TouringProfessionals. It is apparent that the UPA membership as a whole is notbeing treated equally or with the same respect as its counter part theWomen’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA). Understandably, theplayer’s are outraged and we believe this matter will do nothing but impairU.S. pool if not resolved in the near future. It is my position that the will ofthe UPA is simply the will of the players.”In response to both the BCA’s recent decision and the behavior of theWPA, effective immediately, UPA players will not plan to attend the 2008Qatar World Open 9-Ball Championships currently scheduled for June27-July 5, 2008.Some of the top names in the men’s professional pool scene have providedstatements on this issue as follows:“I take it as a personal offense that any association would seek to undermineour ranking system. We are the players in the U.S. and I will support mycountry’s association. If the WPA wants American players, then I am certainthat we will be shown the respect that we deserve from WPArepresentatives.” - Rodney Morris, UPA Lead Representative“This is our tour and our ranking system. No one has the right to take thisaway from us. Honestly, I am shocked and disappointed that we are treatedwith such disrespect.” - Tony Robles, UPA Representative“In my opinion, we have the strongest ranking system in the world and weare not about to let that go.” - Tony Crosby, UPA Representative“I’m in full support of the UPA - I believe in what it stands for and that thepower should be in the hands of our player association.” - Shane VanBoening, UPA Touring ProfessionalIf you would like to learn more about the UPA organization, our website islocated at www.upatour.com or to contact us directly with questions, pleasecall (480) 353-6747 or email [email protected]

UPA Players TakeStand Against WPA

An Open Letter in Support of the UPAfrom: John Lewis - Executive Director ACSBravo to the UPA for standing up to the recent “BCA Resumes Control ofMen’s Rankings, Communications” release! The UPA - United States ProfessionalPoolplayers Association, is an affiliateto the ACS - American CueSportsAlliance. The ACS - a member-governed association - fully supportsa pro men’s player union in the UnitedStates and their right to administerand govern their own affairs. When issues arise that negativelyaffect the players, too often there’s a lack of activism. Regardless of -- who is promoting a pro men’s event- who claims to be a governing body- who advertises themselves as the next savior of pool,it is paramount that the professional pool players in the United States remainfocused on their own union, whose sole purpose is to look after theirinterests. In recent years, that has been the UPA. Some may criticize the organizationfor doing too little, but such critics should never lose sight of one vision -the UPA is “the men pro player’s thing” to which they can look to whenoutside forces make decisions that affect their future without including their“union” in the decision-making.The Billiard Congress of America trade association should only besupported for what it is - a trade association that is necessary to the industry. However, since 2004 when the BCA divested itself of its player programs,it has unfortunately insisted on continuing to adopt a governing body stance, with the also unfortunate backing of the world-governing body for the sportof pool, the WPA - World-Pool-Billiard Association. The WPA is a credible world sports body, but even a credible body canmake poor decisions. The WPA interference in United States pool growthby their continuing to recognize a trade association whose entire board ofdirectors is trade people, is a black mark on the world-governing body.Unlike all the other confederation members of the WPA, the BCA is NOT asports organization! It has no sports structure. If it walks like a tradeassociation and quacks like a trade association...IT’S A TRADEASSOCIATION! No amount of coaching from the WPA to be otherwise isgoing to change the BCA’s true profile. The ‘Committee’ formed by the BCA of various Player Member organizations(which included the UPA) to somehow satisfy the WPA and to somehowaddress their complete lack of player membership, has shown itself to be

What is natural talent?I posed that question to my pool teamas we assembled for practice oneevening. I got a quick retort from oneof my teammates who said, “Naturaltalent, Roger, is a 36-inch verticalleap!” Well, that answer may haveheld water had my question been inreference to the game of basketball -but it wasn’t. And I failed to see then,as I fail to see now, where a 36-inchvertical leap could ever help anybodyplay better pool. So what does naturaltalent really have to do with playing thegame of pool?If you think about it, you can probably

remember many times that certain pool players have been said to possessnatural talent. After hearing that comment many times myself, I becamecurious as to its real meaning. I finally came to the conclusion that naturaltalent has almost nothing to do with playing good pool. Now before you getall in a huff, please allow me to explain. Most of us possess the same physical attributes and same mentalcapacities as any of the top players in the world. We have two hands, twoarms, two legs, two feet, and two eyes. We also possess averageintelligence; and that’s really all that’s necessary to play this game at anabove-average level. So why is it that some players start playing muchbetter, much sooner than others? This is what I believe: Some players advance more rapidly than othersbecause certain things come easier to them. They start out possessing anatural feel for the game. They learn quicker. They don’t struggle withunderstanding the laws of physics and geometry that are involved in playingpool; they pick those things up easily. And their hand/eye coordination isalready present without the necessity of a lot of training.Being born with that aforementioned ability is what we would call “naturaltalent.” But does the absence of natural talent necessarily mean that oneis limited as to the level of skill they can reach? No, it doesn’t. It simplymeans that players without natural talent will have to work longer and harderthan the naturally talented player in order to grasp the same concepts andmaster the same skills. The point that I am trying to make here is that (in my opinion) natural talenthas been overrated in the game of pool. Desire and discipline will take anyplayer a lot further in pool than natural talent will. And a lack of naturaltalent can be overcome if a player wants to work hard at developing acquiredskills. And even the naturally talented players still have to work at honingtheir skills. So don’t allow yourself to be intimidated just because you may somedayhave to face a player who is “naturally talented.” Besides, the natural talentthat player possesses may only be a 36-inch vertical leap!

Is There Such A Thing AsNatural Talent?

Samm Diep (c) March 2008Either you’re a team player or you’re not. Pool is not a team sport. When

you’re at the table, you’re a lonely soldier. Youmay play on a team with four other guys that

want to win just as badly, but the outcome ofyour single game is not dependent uponanyone but YOU. No one will fumble yourpass, no one will run your ball out of bounds, and no one is capable of getting your objectball in the hole but YOU.

That’s the beauty of our independent sport. We have the freedom to make our owndecisions and create our own destinies. However, I can’t deny that there’s amagical thing that occurs during teammatch play. When five players gettogether and share one single goal;when you selflessly put the needs of yourteam above your own; when great play

infectiously spreads amongst your peers, it’s truly poetry in motion. You check your egos at the door. You find yourself playing some of the bestpool of your life and you don’t even know where it came from. You’re notdoing it for the glory. You’re fighting to not let down your cohorts. You wantto share the sweet victory together. It’s truly a special energy that can notbe manufactured.Don’t get me wrong. Of course there are the glory hounds and themegalomaniacs, but I’m referring to that mutual altruistic endeavor of equally

carrying each other through the finish line. There’s just no other feeling thatcompares to winning a national team championship. Of course singles’success is rewarding, but it’s a completely different conquest.Having the support of your teammates behind you can sometimes help usexecute more confidently. I’ve learned so much about pool and about myselfwhile playing on a team with champions. I’ve been the weakest link and I’vebeen a stronger one. Regardless of expectations, being a part of a team isa commitment to accept and support one another through good times andbad. It’s so spooky to me how often the momentum simultaneously shifts onboth tables during team matches. Turnovers happen concurrently withoutthe two teammates even knowing it. There might be a scratch on the breakon one table and a missed 8 ball on the other table. Just like that, the ball’sin your court again. Team energy is simply a beautiful thing. So, the next time you’re playing a team match and your teammate doesn’tget out when they should have. Try to be supportive. You’d be amazing athow infectious your positive energy can be. What would you want to hear- or not hear? Team play can be fun. Enjoy it.PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. the ‘window dressing’ of which it was suspected. In the United States, thewomen pros have a strong player’s union, and the WPBA serves thatfunction very capably. But the men pro player’s in the United States shouldnever lose sight of their best interest in supporting their own player’s union, and the UPA currently serves that purpose! When the BCA announced a new ranking system that will affect the menpro players in the United States without consultation or input fromrepresentative players from their player’s union, the trade associationshowed its true colors.

Players in all member-governed associations should not support suchactions. Let your voices be heard! Support the UPA on this issue anddiscourage the BCA trade association from any involvement in governingthe sport.Especially with the current overall weakness in the billiard industry, weneed the BCA to fully focus on trade issues. The BCA should be workingwith and fully supporting Player Member organizations such as the UPA,instead of needlessly meddling with player issues that it is simply notorganized or suited to responsibly handle.

Diablo Valley Pool League crowned a new National SeniorsWomen's Singles champion at the 2008 BCA National 8-BallChampionships held at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevadathis past May - Holly Robinson from Concord. This was Holly's first year playing in the Seniors!! Let’s take amoment to congratulate our local veteran for such anachievement. She sat in the winner seat waiting for the toughest competitionto try to take her down. It was a race to 4, she lost first race3-4 but came out strong on the final second race beatingher tough opponent 4-1. She earned $2500 and hasnow become a master player.Holly Robinson is and has been and activemember of our Diablo Valley Pool League. The Diablo Valley Pool Women league has beenrunning leagues since 1995. We are composedof women who love to play pool and strive to getcompetitive enough to face the challenges of thecompetition of the upcoming BCA and ACS eventsthat run out of the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas,Nevada. She is one of the most aggressive players in our local scene, and has puttogether some of the strongest teams in the women’s, open-mix and scotchdoubles leagues. Cashing in the top places is a familiar theme for her.Cue-Ball control is her strength and running racks is one of her favoritepast times. Her safety game played a huge role while competing in LasVegas tournament. She will be teaming in with another veteran of the game Gary Marcus thisJune in the ACS tournament in Las Vegas, good luck.Lets hear Holly’s Thoughts:How did you start playing pool?“I started in 1976 playing at “Town & Country” on Monument Blvd. in Concordwith their resident pro “Hank Noel”. He and I played scotch doublestournaments back when Magoo’s was known as Sharkey’s. He took me tosome big tourneys in Sacramento where I was lucky enough to meetMinnesota Fats and play a game with him. I gave up pool for many yearsuntil I joined DVPL 10 years ago or so.”How did u hear about DVPL?A friend asked me to check it out around the time it started 12 years ago.I’ve been supporting most of their leagues since, women’s, open and scotchdoubles. How has your Vegas experience been? It’s been a learning experience about myself for sure. The first so manytimes you go you might just spend time trying to get comfortable with the

dynamic of playing in that atmosphere, I know I did. It took me manytrips to get comfortable with playing there and actually blocking mostof everything out while I’m playing. I know I felt like this time I reallywasn’t aware of much other than the table I was playing on and thatwas a leap forward for me.What do you suggest to new players?Practice with players that consistently beat you, watch how they’re

getting out and winning and emulate them. Play the Friday nighttournament at Vinnie’s, I’ve spent years getting beat up in

that tournament and now consistently place higher upin it.How do you compare small table to big table play?I think there are differences in the strokes and wayyou would play both tables. I prefer to play on thesmall table as that’s what we mostly play on inleague. At what point does having fun while playingpool turn in to a stressful situation?I find it somewhat stressful when I beat myself atthe game. I don’t mind being beat by a better player, but sometimes when you make mistakes and beat

yourself that can be stressful. How has scotch doubles helped your game?I’ve learned a lot from watching how my partner shapes their shots firsthand. In scotch you can get in the head of your partner and understand what theyare thinking relative to the table or a shot and going forward it can give youa different perspective when approaching shots.Plans for the future?Continue to better my game to play Master’s Division next year in LasVegas ’09.How do you plan to pass on the message to new players?Continue to encourage players to take opportunities to play against thebest players and learn from them. All 3 leagues give this opportunity. I knowif it weren’t for the top players my game would never have progressed as ithas and I really appreciate having the opportunity to play with some of thebest players in the Bay Area! What does I feel to be a National Champion?Unbelievable….it really hasn’t sank in all the way…..Here are some of her local achievements:

The 14and1.com Nationals MAINEVENT!Atlantic City Billiard Club, NJTrue double elimination tournament formatwas used for the 14and1.com NationalsMain Event. The top 2 finishers in allleagues nationwide earned an invite intothe main event. What a battle it was!! Come Fridaymorning all players were focused andready! 14.1 Players from 8 statesconverged on Atlantic City to try andbecome the 1st 14and1.com NationalChampion through qualifying in their localsanctioned league.John Downie showed poise and skillgetting to the hill on the top side of thewinners bracket by methodicallycontrolling the table throughout his matches. On the bottom half of thewinners side Tom Acciavatti was showing the same poise and skill as well,it looked like he may cruise to play for the hot seat match with John until heran into Joe Stern III who was also playing well. Joe caught an early lead inthe first few racks that was added to his 45 ball spot given by Tom. 3/4 theway through the match with Joe leading comfortably things turned as Tomwas able to get John on 3 fouls and knock back that seemingly large lead, then Tom chipped away and pulled it out to get to the hot seat match withJohn Downie sending Joe Stern III to the 1 loss side. The hot seat matchwas a classic battle between 2 knowledgeable players who do not relinquishthe table easily. John managed to send Tom to the 1 loss side in a wellplayed match. Waiting there for Tom was Al Muccilli who was playing verywell and just got done putting Joe Stern III out in 4th place. The match wasa classic with 2 old school style players in battle! With Tom giving up 30balls going to 140 he pulled out that victory 140-131 to make the true doubleelimination finals and getting another chance at John Downie. At 9:30Saturday night we were lagging for the break in the finals of the 14and1.comNationals between John Downie (B+ handicap) and Tom Acciavatti (A+handicap). Tom gives John 45 balls on the wire going to 140 and we are

14and1.com Crowns Champoff! Tom has to beat John twice in the truedouble elim format. The first match sawJohn get cold from sitting and never reallyget going as Tom cruised to win the firstmatch 140-96. Next up is one game for thecheese! John now starts to get back instroke a bit and manages to stay even inscore with Tom throughout but is fullyaware Tom has caught the spot, somewhere around 100 balls each on thescore Tom makes a great long break shotwhile he is on a run but WAIT! The cue ballis creeping toward the corner! It drops inand Tom scratches!. John now knows fullwell its opportunity time as he eyes out thetable, then proceeds to methodically puttogether a 29 ball run, from there they getinto safety battle and Tom gets another

opportunity after winning the safety battle. Tom is now 114 and John 129,Tom is at the table with a few balls sticking out, he gets a bit to straight onthe ball he wanted to use to break open the rack and elects for a combinationthat will break the balls open, you could hear a needle drop in the AC BilliardClub as Tom gets down to fire at the combo, it hits the point! and the ballsare now wide open, John now gets up and he had to make a couple toughshots, at 3:30am Sunday morning John Downie runs out to become the1st 14and1.com National Champ! Congratulations to John Downie and allthe players that participated and played their hearts out. See you next year!1st $2,000 John Downie (B+) - Downington, PA playing out of D&D

Griffin Promoting New Pro Events

Mark Griffin

Mark Griffin Makes the Pros an Offer They Can’t Refuse.Industry leader Mark Griffin has announced his intention of promoting new

pro events. Due to the current lackof direction, and compounded byleadership that has been unable toprotect player welfare, Griffinguarantees generating $200,000+in added prize money in 2009. Plus,he presented players with a planfor continued growth that providesplayers economic security for theirfuture.Troubled by lack of genuinesponsorship, players not gettingpaid at association sanctionedtournaments, ranking snafus, event scheduling conflicts, etc.,Griffin agrees that the pros are inworse shape than ever.“When I see the state of affairs for

the pro players, it makes my blood boil. I have been around this sport for 45years. Recent setbacks have sent pro player economic opportunities backto the stone age,” fumes Griffin.Professional sports, take golf for example, have a strong amateur base.Pool is no different. Griffin, as CEO of the BCA Pool League, has 60,000+members. This infrastructure offers the pros an opportunity, through crosspromotions, sponsorships, and membership drives, where the amateurbase can help fund pro events and allow both the opportunity to grow.As always, there are a few conditions. “I will welcome player input, but noentity will tell me what I have to do. We are spending considerable time, and money, on pro player behalf. To protect our investment, and the pros,we will probably have to initiate a new association where player’s ideasand concerns can be addressed.”Mark has a spotless reputation in the industry. His success with the BCAPool League, Diamond Billiard Products, etc., speaks for itself. He seesthe offer as a stable way for pros to make a living.“This concept is, obviously, a work in progress. I had been talking withsome of the more high-profile players who had expressed their concernsand, suddenly, this all came to a head and something just had to be done.We all agreed that, by working together, this plan could work.“Hey, I can see that players could even have health insurance in the comingyears.”What a concept! Attention pros. So that you can be kept in the loop, pleaseforward your contact info to [email protected]. Include a phone number.

8th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship hosted byBCAPL at the Riviera May 12-17,2008Article and photos courtesy of David Thomson ©mediumpool.comThe 8th Annual Predator International 10-BallChampionship - The Riviera Hotel & Casino on May12-17, 2008. Produced by Dragon Promotions, presented by Seybert’s Billiard Supply, co-sponsored by Diamond Billiard Products and TheBCA Pool League, the international pro event washosted by the BCA National 8-Ball Championships.96 players from from 23 countries were inattendance. “Now that’s a strong field.” said BCAPLCEO Mark Griffin, “It’s amazing how many powercompetitors there are out there. Our sport isdefinitely under threat. It’s not just a Filipino invasionany more, the whole world wants our titles.”Karim Belhaj, CEO and Co-Owner of PredatorProducts commented, “Dragon Promotions andPredator felt that it was worthwhile for all our partnersto go to Las Vegas. As vendors, we’ve been presentat The BCA National 8-Ball Championships for manyyears. This year it gives us pleasure to be an evenbigger part of it.”Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions added, “Ourteam is excited to partner with the BCAPL, andDiamond, in making the 8th Annual PredatorInternational Championship happen. The BCA

National 8-BallChampionshipsis one of pool’sgreatest happenings of the year. Itattracts more players and fans to onevenue than any other eventworldwide. That’s an amazingaccomplishment and we’re honoredto be a part of its success.”So was Tony Drago. Some may saywho?Although, competing in his first ever10-Ball tournament, Tony’s nostranger to pool. He was World PoolMaster in ’03, He was MVP as teamEurope trounced Team America inDecember at the Mosconi Cup and,

his recent win in Paris had earned him an invitation to the ’08 WPM. Tony

was ready. He had definitely developed a confidence that surprised manyas he handily defeated Francisco Bustamante 13-10 in the finals.Negotiating tough outs is business as usual for Drago. He’s really a snooker

player. He thinks playing pool has certainadvantages. One is, the more balls on the table thebetter. In snooker, 21 balls is the norm. For a 9-Ballplayer, that extra orb in 10-Ball means more trafficto maneuver so, it is harder to run out. Tony’snicknamed “The Tornado,” and, one thing is for sure— when he’s is at the table, you don’t need a shotclock. The well-versed, mostly BCA Pool League audience, had Drago as the underdog. Bustey was definitelyfavored to win, but it looked like nerves got to him. After early game, elementary errors, Bustamantewould fight back to tie the match at 9. From there,he garnered only one more game as EuroSport TVcaptured the action. Kozoom.com had uploaded theearlier round activity worldwide via the internet.Unbeaten, Drago had wins over Canada’s LucSalvas, last years runner-up Cliff Joyner, GarethEspirit (DOM), another Canadian — and BCAPL 9-Ball Challenge winner Tyler Edey, England’s DarrenAppleton, Pagulayan, in an unbelievable come backto lose on the hill, and Sweden’s Marcus Chamat inthe Semis. Chamat was the man responsible forthe elimination of current World Pool Masters runnerup Mika Immonen and last years 10-Ball champion,Shane Van Boening. There were upsets and a few close calls. India’s,

tho’ mostly playing out of England, Raj Hundal bested Johnny Archer andRob Saez’s hill-hill battle had Bustamante on the rails. Bustey prevailed.Interestingly, It was Jeremy Jones who ended Hundal’s quest. The WPBA was well represented by Allison and Gerda, both of whom hadbig wins over top players. Gerda was down 3-0 to Tony Crosby and finishedby swinging the next 11 games at 10-4. Allie’s terrorizing of Spain’s DavidAlcaide was also a match to remember. David was ahead 9-8 when anerror allowed Allison to the table. She ran that rack to knot it up at nine and, finally, she made a ball on the break. A methodical, calm, and collectedexecution sent the Spaniard west. A surprising 10-4 loss to Mike Dechaine, later, sent Allie home. Earlier, Hofstatter was ousted by France’s StephenCohon.John Schmidt was the last, surviving American on the winner’s side. Earlier,he had beaten German Nicolas Otterman, Efren Reyes and Gabe Owen. His match with Efren started off badly, being down 4-1. Then Efren erred.Schmidt ran amok, his confidence rising with every stroke. Later, in thesingle elimination, round of 16, and the race changed to 11, he metPagulayan who avenged the destruction of Efren. It was Jeremy Jones who outlasted the flailing American contigent. He madeit to the semis and the TV rounds. There, Bustamante got the better of himand he advanced, to no avail, to face Drago who had just defeated Chamat11-7.Drago earned $17,000 for the win, Bustamante accepted $7,500, whileChamat and Jones each received $4,000 for a tied third.Additional sponsors include Ivan Simonis, Aramith, Master Chalk, and Pool& Billiards Magazine.

ALEX PAGULAYAN IS the 2008 PartyPoker.netWorld Pool Masters Champion as he came frombehind to beat Mika Immonen 8-6 in the front of apacked crowd at the Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas .The Filipino was 6-3 down at one stage and lookingin severe trouble but the match turned on an illegalbreak by Immonen whereby he pocketed a ball butfailed to carry two other balls past the headstring. From there Pagulayan cleared to table to gain thenecessary momentum and he became stronger overthe closing stages to take victory.“This was like winning the World Championship forme. I’ve always wanted it but I’ve finally broken theice, “ said a jubilant Pagulayan.“This is 9 ball and I couldn’t get too upset because Ididn’t get a chance. I thought if he runs the set, thenhe runs the set but I knew that if I got a chance Iwould need to focus and concentrate and do the bestI can.“I really didn’t think I’d won it until the last 9 ball droppedbut there were lots of people who like me watchingand that was good for me to have that support,” headded.Pagulayan made two balls from the opening break of the final and althoughImmonen got to the table, the diminutive Filipino took the rack for the earlylead. In contrast to the earlier semi-finals, there was another break that producedthree balls but Pagulayan could not capitalise as he missed the 2 ball.Immonen took advantage to run out and level it.A golden break from Immonen, as the cue ball kicked the 9 ball home, sawImmonen take the lead and he almost did the same again in the fourth, asthe 9 ball hung in the pocket. The Finn pocketed the 1 ball and then madean easy 2/9 combination to go 3-1 ahead. The 1 ball rolled into the corner pocket off the next break but Immonenmade a bad miss on the 3 ball as he seemed to hit it too hard.Pagulayan over hit his shot as he ran out of position on the 4 ball but heredeemed the situation with an excellent cut, gaining good shape on the 5ball. From there he ran out to take the score to 3-2 to Immonen. The Filipino made a schoolboy error in the next as he hit the 4 ball prior tohitting the 2 and with ball in hand, Immonen ran out to restore his two racklead at 4-2.The Finn took the next rack to move to 5-2 and all the pressure was now

on Pagulayan. He responded well as he ran thenext rack to reduce arrears. There was disappointment for Pagulayan thoughas he scratched off the break in the next. The ballswere laid out nicely and Immonen completed aneasy run out to take his lead to 6-3.Immonen made an illegal break in the next as hepocketed a ball but did not bring the requisite twoothers past the headstring. The punishment of lossof visit allowed Pagulayan back to the table and hemade a tidy run out to get within two of Immonen. Now playing with renewed vigour, he delivered agood break that gave him a chance to get right backinto it and he duly responded as a break and runtook him to within a rack of Immonen. Now on aroll, Pagulayan broke and ran the 12th rack to drawlevel at 6-6.Breaking from the centre of the table, Pagulayandeposited the 1 ball into the centre pocket andplayed a fine long reverse cut to down the 2 ball. Inthe zone now, Pagulayan completed his fourth rackin a row to move to the hill at 7-6.

Just when he needed some luck, Immonen returned to the table asPagulayan scratched on the break as he drew the cue ball into the pocket. There was disaster for Immonen as he drew the cue ball all the way downtable and into the corner pocket as he went from the 1 ball to the 2.With ball in hand, Pagulayan worked his way through the table and as heplanted the 9 ball, he let out a yell of joy as he became 2008 PartyPoker.net“It was brutal, why did it have to happen there?” said a disappointedImmonen.“I was able to get a good lead but the illegal break was the real turning pointas it gave him the opportunity to get back in it.“He had some nice layouts but he played well and probably deserved towin. But that’s the way it is sometimes.
