Our lecturers are selected based on both their teaching skills and their “real world”experiences in active clinical practices. Some of the topics they will cover are:

• The latest on adult immunization• Influenza: How to prevent and to treat• New tests and preventive strategies for tuberculosis• HIV: What does the PCP need to know?• Lyme Disease: Controversies in Diagnosis and Management• What’s new in antibiotics?• Strategies for recurrent urinary tract infections• Community-acquired MRSA: How to treat? How to prevent?

By attending the conference, you will hear the latest on these and other topics.Case-based materials are integrated throughout these didactic sessions to enhanceinteraction and learning.

We look forward to seeing you in October!

Course DescriptionThis clinically oriented course is designed specifically for theprimary care practitioner interested in an update on the diag-nosis, treatment, and prevention of common infectious dis-eases of adults. As a rapidly-evolving field, clinicians are facedwith challenges in infectious disease such as escalating resist-ance to antibiotics, new resistant pathogens, antiquatedmicrobiology testing that limits clinical decision-making,evolving drugs with novel mechanisms, and several others. Our course will aim to enhance learner knowledge and com-petence through a comprehensive overview of infections seenin ambulatory practice with an emphasis on areas of contro-versy and new developments in the field. Lectures and casepresentation will focus on challenging problems in the out-and in-patient management of infections of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tracts; sexually transmitted dis-eases; viral illnesses; and other commonly encountered infec-tious diseases. Modern approaches to diagnosis and therational use of new and old antimicrobial agents will be dis-cussed. Special attention will be given to the prevention ofinfections by immunization or antimicrobial prophylaxis.Throughout, the emphasis will be on topics with practicalapplications to patient management, with frequent integrationof case histories into didactic material.

Learning ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants willbe able to:

■ Integrate state-of-the-art investigative data oncommon infectious diseases into their care ofpatients.

■ Synthesize information regarding evidence-basedtreatment protocols for infectious diseases tohelp determine optimal patient care.

■ Model expert clinical skills resulting inimprovement of diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

Target AudienceThe target audience is the primary care provider (thisincludes physicians, NPs, and PAs). While adult inter-nal medicine is targeted, pediatricians are welcometo attend.
