[IMedia HOLD UP A CLICKER, RECEIVER, BAG] These are one of the technologies that can be incorporated into instruction. These are a student response system, though we refer to them as ‘Clickers’. Throughout this presentation we’re going to ask a few questions that will require you to respond by pressing a button on the Clickers. These are one of many technologies that faculty can receive training for through Instructional Media. - After the training you can reserve a set of Clickers and pick them up to use in your class

[IMedia] HCC has several resources to help facilitate technical quality and pedagogically sound instruction. [AV] The IT help desk deals with all network and computer specific problems [AV] The AV department deals with all other classroom technology issues, including control systems, audio systems, and display devices. In some locations lighting is also under AV’s purview. Additionally AV handles requests and delivery of supplemental equipment, like cameras, audio recorders, headsets, etc. [IMedia] Instructional media assists faculty with the instructional design and production of instructional materials while helping them adopt new technologies to support their pedagogical theory.

[AV] Due to differing budgetary and building cycles, as well as the constant improvement in technology, there are many different types of classroom configurations on campus. Throughout this presentation we will be looking at broad subjects relevant to classroom technology, and then we’ll be elaborating on the specifics of the four most common classroom configuration setups we have here at HCC. While you DO NOT need to recall the terms we will introduce, we hope to help you identify our different setups. [AV] Projector Patrol Projector patrol is used to turn on the projector in some rooms. It is designed to automatically appear on the desktop of any computer it is installed on, when the computer is started. If it has previously been closed, or failed to launch automatically, projector patrol can be run manually by clicking on the Projector Patrol desktop icon [POINT TO IT] or By clicking on the icon in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen [POINT TO IT].

[AV] General Info – What do you want to display to your students? In a typical classroom, there are usually several sources of content. i.e. DVD Player, computer, document camera. A source is any device that generates an audio or video signal. So, once the system is on, you will need to select the device that has the content you want displayed. With multiple sources simultaneously connected to any given system, it is imperative to correctly select the source you wish to display. When a projector is on, but is not receiving a source signal, it will project a blue standby screen.

In order to display it we select the PC button on the Mediatech device. If we wanted to display the roster for today’s session we would use the document camera. So we’d turn on the Doc Cam and then press the Doc Cam button. [Invite faculty to come try]

This usually precludes Macintosh computers, as Apple has their own proprietary connections that vary, as well as some newer computers that do not support VGA. It can be tricky to remember that all of the volume controls in a system must be at sufficient levels to hear the output. The iPads have a ton of apps already installed on them. -Educreations – Lets you annotate pictures and record your annotations and voice while you do it -Prezi – App used to make Prezi presentations -Quizlet – App that lets create flash cards and play games to review created content -Those are generic apps, apps that can be used in multiple disciplines. We also have subject specific apps, such as anatomy apps for Health Sciences courses. If a faculty member would like to add an app to the iPad cart, they just need to send their request to [email protected]

[IM] Fall semester 2014 we are piloting a new service for students. Faculty who have students struggling to complete coursework due to technology fluency challenges are asked to tell the student to send an email to [email protected]. We have Instructional Technologists reviewing those emails and they will assist the student with getting the technology support they need. All password, Canvas and other computer access questions should be referred to the Help Desk at 443-518-4444 or by emailing [email protected]. Learning Commons offers assistance with all Microsoft Office products. We can also provide assistance with web tools such as Prezi, Screencast, Glogster, Evernote and more. We also help with hardware related troubles like problems using Smart Phones or Laptops, both Mac and PC.

[AV] A huge portion of our operating budget goes to replacing lamps for projectors please ensure that we have enough lamp hours for the entire year by turning off the projector when not actively using it. While its polite to leave the systems active when you know an instructor is using the classroom after you, idling equipment wastes electricity and shortens the operating life of the equipment. Please turn off all relevant classroom technology when the room will no longer be used and especially at the end of the day.
